Vol 3. Issue 6
Editors Corner:
ABDX membership has reached a new record at 186 members! Your editor is now in Tennessee and looking for work. Of course there is plenty of work to do in the house and 3 acres in the back getting the antenna farm started but that’s not the stuff that pays the bills.
TV and FM DX has been pretty good . It’s also the last year for analog TV DX. See what you can get in this final year. AM and HF DX has “crunchnicity” from spring lightning storms. Give FM and TV DX a shot and to help you, we have call letter changes.
We enjoy seeing our members who have made it to the “Hall of Fame” for those of us with faces for radio! If you are a member and want to be in the Rogues Gallery, send your pix to webmaster@americanbroadcastdx.com. We would love to see you in the gallery. There have been no new faces at www.abdx.org in a while.
Only submissions from ABDX members will be accepted unless the editor decides the information is so important that it should be added. This will probably be very rare, Should you receive this and you are not a member, go to this URL and tell us a little about yourself and we will consider you for membership.
This is the site to join ABDX.

We're a ways apart so I'm not sure if this is the same thing. I'm getting what sounds like a rather weak carrier at 1633.56kHz. It does seem to be warbling a bit. This is with my mini-whip so I can't make any estimate as to direction. I can detect it audibly in USB mode, though I'm not sure I would have without you mentioning it. It does show up fairly well on a frequency graph. Switching to CW mode and kicking in the 6Hz audio filter is how I arrived at 1633.56kHz.

Heard on an Icom R71A fed by a LFE M601C antenna:
1090 CKKW Kitchener ON IDing as "Oldies 1090" New!
After a few more moments, CKKW faded out and WBAL resumed its complete
dominance of 1090 KHz.
The R-390A is currently on the bench. I was giving it its semi-annual inspection, when I noticed a loose gear - the three screws that attach it to the smaller gear behind it were loose - so loose the gear was very wobbly. Good thing I spotted this. Fortunately, I have an offset
Phillips screwdriver, so I was able to tighten the screws without having to take off the front panel.
While the R-390A is on the bench, I decided to replace the selenium rectifier, for piece of mind. Using the logic that nobody invites a skunk into their house, or their radio room, I am brewing a little module that contains 4 1 amp 1000 PIV diodes in a bridge, complete with bypass caps [overkill, but I like overkill] and a couple dropping resisters to get the voltage down to where it should be. Of course, this only comes into play when using standby or cal as the sole purpose
is to power the antenna relay.
During the R-390A's vacation on the bench, the Icom R71A is pinch-hitting very well as official DX Ginsu knife [it slices, it dices...].
The real Ginsu knife test is getting fairly clear audio from 1521 Saudi Arabia in the presence of a powerful skywave WWKB.

1300 KHz WJMO Cleveland OH IDing as "The New Praise 1300" NEW!
I have repaired my R71A, thanks to a new ROM board from Roberto Nardo in Italy. Now the R71A tunes from 9 KHz to 30.9 MHz and is dead on frequency. No more having to add 200 KHz to the displayed frequency to get the real frequency. Its selectivity is unreal - I can get 1089 KHz Talksport in the UK with no hets, no splatter simply by selecting the narrow bandwidth and tuning down to 1088 to eliminate the het. LW performance is very good too, being able to steer around beacons.
I also repaired the damaged volume pot.
There are certainly better rigs out there for program listening, but for hunting out the TAs on 9 KHz spacing, the R71A is very impressive.

Digital Broadcasting notes -
It is about 1630 local time here in Tampa FL as the usual afternoon westerly air flow hits the Gulf air, creating numerous thunder cells in this area.
I am listening to WFLA 970 on my Accurian, using the included untuned small loop. The station is 25 kW and the distance from here to their towers is 2.58 miles (two dot five eight miles) So I am definitely in the local coverage area, and not in a daytime pattern null.
Static bursts are causing HD unlock at the rate of about 5 per minute with the average unlock time anywhere from 3 to maybe 8 seconds before regaining lock. The analog fallback sync is pretty well timed (you can't hear any stutter or overlap) but the apparent change in level of maybe 3 or 4 dB, and the change in fidelity is somewhat bothersome. The radio is atop
a bookshelf about 15 feet away, so there are no proximity detuning effects. In the past, on quiet days, I've found I can force temporary unlock by just moving the loop.
Of course, this is a first-gen HD set, but I don't think a newer set would react much differently.
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. Tone tests from WE2XFZ, Chilocco, OK, by the OSU Multispectral Laboratory, have been heard on 540, 830, 1680 kHz and 107.5 MHz by gh and other listeners in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, June 16-18, detailed in postings to MW DX lists, and in DX Listening Digests 8-070, upcoming 8-071, q.v.
A reminder from last year`s DXLD 7-085: THERE COULD BE SHORTWAVE TESTS TOO --- PATROL THESE FREQUENCIES, 1 kW on USB, LSB, AME, also from the Chilocco OK and/or Flying H, NM, but different callsign, WE2XEV, on
4015, 4085, 12115, 12185, 22015, 22085, 26115, 26185.
NTIA accepted these, but two more frequencies had not yet been accepted, 12415 and 12485
** OKLAHOMA. Noted something this morning (16.6.08) you might want to check out. Sometime between 0800-0900 CDT [1300-1400 UT], I noticed a loud 2000 Hz wide test tone on 540 kHz. The S-meter on my G313e indicated S9+10db. It suddenly stopped allowing me to again hear the usual KWMT (S7) daytime tug of war with KDFT. Then at 10:03 a.m. CDT, it resumed at S9+20dB. At 10:25 CDT the test tone stopped and the carrier signal dropped to S9+10dB.
My guess is it must be located within a 60-mile [radius] from my location. A check of all the stations in the area find them operating at full power on their assigned frequencies. I find no indication of a new station at the FCC website. I hope it's an anomaly for the world doesn't need another station on 540 kHz, and especially NOT in Oklahoma!
If you tune to 540 kHz now (1055 CDT), you find a carrier signal blocking KWMT from being received. At this moment it's the strongest signal being received between 530 and 680 kHz (Best wishes, Richard Allen, S of Billings OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
Thanks for a great tip. This is very likely the long-awaited testing of a hush-hush project by the OSU Multispectral Laboratories in Ponca City, from Chilocco (N of there at the KS border). There is a lot about in some issues of DXLD last year. Other possible frequencies: 830, 1680, 92.3, 99.1, 107.5. Shortwave and TV too. Call: WE2XFZ

Yes, I am getting the 540 carrier at 1611 UT check. Not `local` strength here, but certainly nothing ordinary. Loops 45/225 degrees or slightly less, which checks with Chilocco. Soon resumed continuous tone test, by 1635 until cut off abruptly just before 1707, without any ID on the hour or any announcements at all (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
I was aware of OSU's transmitter at Chilocco (just west of US 177, across the river from Arkansas City) but didn't put it and the test signals together in my mind until now. It's a healthy S9+20 here at the moment. Its test signal is only 2 kHz wide so it isn't interfering with KFRM, yet. I hope it goes away as suddenly as it came.
I'll have to get my old Space Magnet in action and see what direction it is coming from. The G313e is connected to 21-meter wire running NE-SW which seems to favor stations to the northeast like KWMT-540 or WTDY-1670. I'm in the process of constructing an EWE or two for medium wave.
Oh well, I can forget it for the moment. They ceased transmission at 12:06 CDT (lunch break?) and KWMT is back over KDFT. From the amount of lightning static, it sounds like it might be a stormy afternoon (Richard Allen, ibid.)
Hi Kirk, Tnx to a tip from Richard Allen, the hush-hush OSU test from Chilocco I mentioned to you some time ago seems to be on the air now, 11:30 am CDT, carrier on 540, sometimes with tones. You might want to check this out, and other possible frequencies, 830, 1680, 92.3, 99.1, 107.5, not to mention some TV and SW as in several items about this last year in DXLD. 73, (Glenn to Kirk Allen, ibid.)
Hi Glenn, You happened to catch me with a little time to spare, so I checked out all the AM/FM frequencies you mentioned. (I'll read all the links you sent asap). At 1710 UT, I heard a very clear 1 kHz tone (or near that) on 540. Nothing on any of the other frequencies. I heard the "station" on an Eton E-100. Very loud clear signal here (Kirk Allen, Ponca City, June 16, ibid.)
Hi Kirk, Both Richard and I heard the tone test on 540 cut off at 1707 UT. If you were still hearing a tone after that, perhaps they cut back to much lower power. Still not back on as of 2015 UT. Nor anything on the other frequencies. But they could be back, tomorrow morning if not sooner. Please let me know if you hear anything further from this (Glenn to Kirk, via DXLD)
Glenn: With the use of the G313e receiver's spectrum analyzer, I found the unidentified station sending a 2 kHz wide test tone on 830 kHz at 1320 CDT [1820 UT] with S9+30db signal strength. It was the strongest signal in the entire AM band at that time. The transmitter powered down just before 1330 CDT due most likely to a thunderstorm moving through the Arkansas City area at the time. I did some quick direction finding my old YB400 and it appears to be on a NE-SW bearing. So you're probably correct about it being at Chilocco (Richard Allen, ibid.)
Richard, I checked all 3 frequencies on and off, but did not catch 830. By 2 kHz wide, do you mean a 1 kHz tone, as to its pitch? I think that`s what it was on 540, but didn`t try to measure it. Should be closer to NNE from your angle (Glenn to Richard, ibid.)
The tone extended to 1000 Hz (or 1 kHz) to either side of the frequency. It was possible to adjust the IF bandwidth under 2 kHz and not hear the tone. I'm not an expert on these things, just happy to figure out there isn't a new b/c station on 540 kHz.
The distance between here and the Chilocco transmitting aerial mounted on the old Indian school water tower is 45 miles with a bearing of 28°. That corresponds somewhat to my quick direction check with the YB400 (Richard Allen, OK, ibid.)
Will check that frequency as often as I'm able. I just now checked it and heard nada at 0110 UT June 17 (Kirk Allen, OK, ibid.)
Nothing further heard here either, tho I have not been able to check them all very often.
People at a distance may want to look for OCs or TTs on these frequencies at night. As in last year`s info, the same organization is also licensed to test experimentally from Flying H, SW of Roswell NM, different frequencies (Glenn Hauser, Enid, ibid.)

I Have the wobbler loud & clear tonight on 1630 KHz , however That is only in Single Side Band, if i turn off ssb it disappears, this was away from any CFLs, or other noise devices. (Checked around 11:54 MDT). It was not there last night when I Checked a little before local Midnight.

This afternoon while doing a quick daytime MW dial scan, noted an apparently new AM station on 1520. Format consists of continuous NOAA weather forecasts, similar to what is heard locally on 162.55 mHz, but with more of a focus on north Puget Sound marine forecasts as far
north as Vancouver Island (B.C.), Juan de Fuca Strait and Georgia Strait; and Olympic Mountain forecasts. No mention of Seattle per se.
They I.D. as "WWG24, Puget Sound" broadcasting on "162.425 mHz."
I can find no info on this station online. Suspect it's a transmitter test for the new 1520 out of Snohomish, WA, co-owned with KRKO 1380 Everett, WA; but they're not supposed to be on the air until '09.

Here in Adamsville, TN, I get one sometimes HD station. None on FM and one on AM, WLAC 1510. I sure can hear lots of hissing, but only can sometimes decode WLAC.
This is on the Sangean HDR-, rabbit ears and the RS loop.

I had a signal from WCBS 880 in NYC. It was real weak and in a mess of stations and heard on a DX 440 with Q-Stick about 0000 5/25. It was the first time I heard it here since moving.
Heard in a Golden Wheat 2004 Saturn Ion whippin it!
1280 WMCP Columbia, TN 1600 with TOH ID and into news. Lots of crunchnicity. Fair to weak but steady.

Well, Tulsa has 4 IBOCers now...KFAQ-1170 noted with IBOC for the first
time last evening, making 1160-1210 a real mess with WOAI. KAKC-1300
noted this evening on the drive home with IBOC. They had turned the IBOC
off over a year ago. So Tulsa IBOC stations are: KFAQ-1170, KAKC-1300,
KMUS-1380 and KTBZ-1430.

I'm picking up something between 1625 and 1630 on my "barefoot" Radio Shack DX-399. Can't tell if it's QRM/QRN from something in my computer room or an actual signal. It's very weak, but it does seem to have a flutter to it. It seems to loop E/W from my location
The Whole Earth
** CUBA. RHC did it again, slow to turn off the 11750 transmitter at 2300 conclusion of Spanish to Europe, June 1. Instead, added one eighth of an hour in English, which is supposed to be on 9550 only, until abruptly cut at 2307.5*
Also, RHC 11680 is colliding with Spain! June 2 at 0110 I was hearing Castilian mixed with Spanish from two stations less than 1 Hz apart, and roughly equal strength. REE is scheduled here at 2300-0200 to South America. Commies vs former Colonialists! RHC extended usage of this frequency two or three months ago, oblivious of Spain, which of course is in HFCC while Cuba is not
** LAOS [non]. Hmong Lao Radio missing from 11785, Sunday June 1 at 1322 check, just Firedrake and VOA Chinese via Thailand. O, there it is on new 11750! Not a spur either, as the 11785 transmitter had been producing for about a week, but right on 11750 alone. Rechecked at 1503, 11750 was still on with WHRI gospel huxter in English. I didn`t have a chance to check later in the day to see how long WHRI stayed on 11750, but at 2304 it was back on 11785, fortunately for RHC.
Is 11750 shown on WHR`s own website http://www.whr.org/Frequencies.cfm – of course not, and still not when rechecked at 0047 UT June 2. Angel 6 is now supposed to be running on 11785 all the way from 1300 to 2400.
Is 11750 on HLR`s own website http://www.h-lr.com/ No! Still shows 11785 Sundays at 8 am US time, as if we had only one timezone.
In fact WHRI 11750 is not to be found on any online SW schedule, yet? Not even EiBi just updated May 29.
Bad news for BBC via Thailand, supposedly on 11750 at 1200-1400, altho I could not hear any of it under WHRI, so there may be less interference for HLR in CNAm than there was on 11785. Or maybe it was a mistake. Or maybe it was a test
** SERBIA [non]. I did not have a chance to check for IRS on new 6190 May 31-June 1, as they had promised, but June 1 after 2330, 0000 and 0100 UT June 2, I could hear something on 6190 that was not there before; poor reception these dates, but presumably IRS, and no more co-channel on XEPPM 6185. At 0115, 6190 was playing classical music, and so was it when I brought up the webcast at 0125, in time to hear the lack of any announcement about the music (just disposable fill?), and the standard English sign-off claiming the frequencies are 6100 and 7240, which of course apply only to the European service, so we`ll never hear them announce 6190, as they never announced 6185 either. How convenient for them
** ALGERIA [non]. RTA may have ceased the relay (tests?) via France, but still heard via VTC facilities, June 2 at 0528 with sermon in Arabic (not recitation), weak on 7150 Sines and barely audible on 7260 Skelton, but nothing on 7305 which was Issoudun
** CUBA [and non]. Not only is RHC colliding with REE on 11680 at 0000-0200, but now Habanalog has QRDRM from RNZI which just started using 11670-11675-11680 at 0259-0458 and 1936-2050.
As an outlaw country, Cuba refuses to participate in HFCC, so RNZI may not have been aware of the collision in picking 11670-11680; and anyway, with Cuba aiming at SAm, this may not be a problem for RNZI in its Pacific target areas. But it sure is here. June 2 at 0416, RHC 11680 in Spanish was badly bothered by DRM buzz.
If RHC adheres to the sked as compiled by EiBi:
11680 1930-2000 Su CUB Radio Habana Cuba EO SAm
11680 2000-2030 CUB Radio Habana Cuba F SAm
11680 2030-2130 CUB Radio Habana Cuba E SAm
11680 2130-2200 CUB Radio Habana Cuba F SAm
11680 2300-0200 E Radio Exterior Espana S SAm
11680 0000-0500 CUB Radio Habana Cuba S SAm
We see that the collisions with RNZI are at 0259-0458, 2000-2050 (Sunday from 1936). But is 11680 really on at 1930/2200? It`s not on the RHC website sked
http://www.radiohc.cu/espanol/frecuencia/frecuencias-espanol.htm
--- only at 0000-0500; still dated as expiring in March 2008, tho we know it has been updated since then, if not completely so.
BTW, per Aoki, Kuwait is also scheduled on 11675 in DRM until 0300, and then in analog from 0315; so it should be interesting to monitor around 0300 in both modes to see what happens, as in DRM 11675 goes from NZ to KUW:
11675 R.KUWAIT 2200-0300 1234567 Arabic(Digital) 150 350 Sulaibiyah KWT 4745E 2910N MOI a08
11675 R.KUWAIT 0315-0700 1234567 Arabic 500 350 Sulaibiyah KWT 4745E 2910N MOI a08
The DRM DX schedule also shows Kuwait active in Arabic to NAm until 0300, tho I rarely see it reported. Kuwait analog after 0315 could be a big problem for NZ DRM.
Another problem for RNZI DRM on 11670-11675-11680 could be North Korea which has a 22-hour-a-day transmission varying from 11677 to 11680, e.g. in EiBi: 11677 2000-1800 KRE KCBS Pyongyang K KRE k
On the subject of QRDRM to RHC, serves the damn jammers right, 6000 kHz also gets buzz from R. Australia Brandon 5990-5995-6000 at 1100-1200
** INDONESIA. No sign of VOI on 9525 or 9526 at 1348 check June 2
** MEXICO [and non]. XEXQ, 6045, barely audible June 2 as late as 1302 with classical guitar, then YL ID, only a bit of which I could pull between static crashes and fades, ``Radio Universidad``. Their inverted-V antenna is reported to have been lowered to near ground level, accounting for much attenuated outsending. I was also hearing a very weak warbling het, making me wonder if some Korean clandestine is also on there now provoking such jamming. 6045 is one of Shiokaze`s alternatives in the local mornings, but the evening broadcast, recently on 6020, is an hour later
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI DRM colliding with CUBA: q.v.
** SUDAN [non]. SSIRI, via Meyerton, S Africa, Monday June 2 at 1309 on 15390 with usual condescending English lessons, frequent 2-tone doorbell sounds, noticed at first because it was underneath open carrier and occasional tones, probably Greenville testing for much later Creole broadcast at 1630, but that went off shortly.
Then found more SSIRI on another new frequency via RSA, 15485, sounding like same show, but not //. Doesn`t this confuse the recipients? Did not try to figure out if same show but not synchronized, or two different episodes. Both of these are scheduled M/W/F only, at azimuths of 7 and 5 degrees, respectively, both to CIRAF 53W and 48. But zone 53 extends only as far north as Tanzania, nothing of Sudan, while 48 includes the eastern half of Sudan, including the southern tip
** U S A [and non]. Unlike Sunday with Hmong Lao Radio, no sign of WHRI/Angel 6 on 11750, or 11785, Monday June 2 at 1315 check; but differing weekday skeds are de rigueur for them. Still nothing on either at 1724 recheck. As of June 2, the Angel 6 program schedule shows 11785 off the air for maintenance M-F at 1300-1600 but listed expendable LeSEA fill programs are also missing after that; and still claims to be using 11785 Sat/Sun 13-14 for HLR. BTW, without Cypress Creek on 11750, BBCWS, English via Thailand at 25 degrees, was audible poorly at 1349, and I recall it can be listenable on good FE mornings, so no doubt BBC would prefer to have it blocked in NAm. No such luck today
** U S A. 15855 with open carrier and continuous squeal, typical for WEWN`s defective transmitter, June 2 at 1359 just before starting modulation
** U S A [non]. Something in S Asian language, mentioning Bangladesh, fair on 15790, June 2 until abrupt 1359* in mid-word.
EiBi shows:15790 1400-1500 USA VoA Radio Aap ki Dunyaa UR SAs /KWT
But this is a service which has just shifted one UT hour earlier due to DST in Pakistan, as in DXLD 8-066. Aoki already has it changed to:
15790 VOICE OF AMERICA 1300-1400 1234567 Urdu 250 70 Kuwait KWT 4741E2931N IBB (R Aap Ki Duniya) a08 Jun. 1
However, when the time changed on June 1, the site also changed from Kuwait to Sri Lanka
** U S A [and non]. WRMI has done some work on the NW antenna at 317 degrees for 9955, and is testing it June 2 so I check for any improvement:
As usual before 1400, when on 160 degree antenna and/or in Spanish, nothing but DentroCuban jamming audible.
1408 tune-in, R. Prague relay, good in English, steady S9+17 but with periodic deep fades, quite readable. I would say this is an improvement, but still fighting high noise level on the band, at least around here. Contest promo in mailbag, later Letter from Prague, and music, so this is obviously the Sunday program played back on Monday. Firedrake and KWHR/Sound of Hope were stronger and clearer on 9930, while PPP on WWCR 9980 was as usual inblasting, and by 1428 was overloading the FRG-7 receiver with E/W longwire, even when tuned to 9955.
WRMI has improved, but the modulation isn`t up to the signal level. Needs audio processing to get the most out of what signal is available. Maybe this is not possible on the old Wilkinson ex-Clarín transmitter?
1429, R. Prague outro in English, more music, and I hoped that the totally out-of-place announcement of R. Prague`s complete transmission schedule in French had been deleted --- but no, they were just running a few minutes late as usual, for at 1431-1433 we got the IS and irrelevant French sked, contact info in French, but it was cut off before completed in the middle of the URL, at 1433 for WRMI half-minute ID. Idea: if R. Prague can`t get its act together and make the half-hour in English totally in English, why not do it for them, inserting an English transmission schedule announcement instead? Or leave it out to get back on time. 1433:30 Italian DX program.
Reception deteriorated slightly and steadily during the following semihour, probably more due to increasing daytime absorption than anything else. Judging from neighbor WYFR reception, WRMI would do much better on 11 MHz or higher during the daytime, but I suppose 9955 is the best compromise if only one frequency must be used 24 hours.
At 1500 a het appeared from a carrier on 9956, detracting further from WRMI reception. What could this be? Aoki already has the answer, which I had not noticed before:
9956 FAMILY RADIO 1500-1700 1234567 Russian 100 352 Tainan TWN 12038E 2311N WYFR a08
This is certainly not the frequency published in YFR`s A-08 Taiwan schedule as in DXLD 8-027, ``9955``. Why in the world did they shift one kHz? The signal is too weak here to be noticeable against WRMI if it were on 9955. At 1502 it sounded like a prayer in Spanish from WRMI, not sure how that got in there; ID, then 1503 DX Partyline. Recheck at 1608, WRMI weaker and unreadable, but the 9956 carrier was still detectable too, gone at 1724 recheck, as scheduled.
I at first thought the QRM must be KHBN Palau which is known to share 9955, and HFCC has it on the air at this time, instead of YFR/Taiwan. FCC May 6 update also shows KHBN on 9955 at 08-17. HFCC also has KHBN on 9955, not YFR/Taiwan on 9955 or 9956, so those going by HFCC may not be aware of it. EiBi May 29 update has neither KHBN nor YFR/Taiwan on 9955. There have been indications recently that KHBN/T8BZ listings include a lot of wooden registrations, so this may be another case of that
** ARGENTINA. RAE must have got its stolen feeder cable replaced, after being knocked off the air over the weekend, for June 2 at 2144 I heard a tango, and that would not be Morocco, then talk in German as scheduled this hour. Besides, the frequency was way off, 15343.9 or so; 2150 some Andean music for balance, 2159 IS and Japanese ID, then greeting listeners in Spanish, French, English, German (? fade), Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Japanese. Finally at 2203 decided which language to stick with, Spanish, and opened with frequencies as 15345, 6060, address of studio, phone number, postal address, C.C. 555, 6000 WAS Buenos Aires --- that`s what it sounded like, but WRTH says C1000WAF, which sounds almost the same! e-mail rae @ radionacional.gov.ar Heard no het at all from Morocco which normally stays on until just after 2200, so RAE was fair and clear
** AUSTRALIA [and non]. 13630, June 2 at 2133 came across Oz accent so assumed it was CRI, especially since they were giving quick weather info for various cities in Asia including Pyongyang, Seoul, Phnom Penh and even Siem Reap, M&W hosts conversing, played ``She`s Not There`` by The Zombies, 2137 stox including NASDAQ, so it must be the business-obsessed Chicom, especially since CRI is relayed by Mali on 13630 at this hour, right? Wrong: then mentioned radioaustralia.net so I look it up. Yes, RA is on 13630 Shep at 21-23, 65 degrees toward us, despite CRI via Mali also supposed to be on 13630 at 1930-2230, but no trace of it; anyway, that changes from English to French at 2130, per Aoki
** CUBA. Following up earlier item about RHC collision with RNZI DRM --- RHC is not in fact on 11680 in the local afternoons, nothing there at 2119 check June 2, so the collision of concern is only after 0300 when NZ DRM 11670-11675-11680 takes over from Kuwait, not vice versa as I implied in previous report
** CZECHIA. R. Prague, 11600 direct, with usual surprisingly good signal into NAm, June 2 at 2130 opening English with news primarily of that country. This is 310 degrees, 100 kW from Litomysl for Mexico, C&E USA, E Canada. Recheck at 2157 with French ID and starting transmission schedule in irrelevant French, but cut off the air before they could get into it. Good idea
** EGYPT [and non]. Big het on WEWN 11550, Monday June 2 at 2114 during relay of R. Vaticano in Spanish. Cairo`s European service is still colliding after several weeks of inaxion, and I bet it stays this way for the rest of A-08. Cairo was originally on the hi side of 11550, about 11550.1, but now it`s on the lo side, approximately 11549.5. It was very hard pull any audio from Egypt due to its own undermodulation, compared to WEWN`s normal modulation level. I did perceive a bit of ME music at 2114. The English sesquihour should have started at 2115; at 2125 I could tell a YL was speaking English, perhaps news. This intolerable situation continued past 2200, no doubt until Cairo closes around 2245
** SAUDI ARABIA. BSKSA, ``The Buzz``, 11915, June 2 at 2128, with no intelligible audio, but could only hear it spreading plus/minus 5, or maybe a kHz more to the hi side
** SERBIA [non]. IRS, 6190, June 2 at 2358 with IS in the clear, tho weak; this is worst time of year to try to reach very far into NAm from Europe so long before sunset on 49m. Hope it`s better to the east. Yes: Brian Alexander in Pennsylvania was listening at the same time and says it was very good there. But the Croatians have the right idea, using 9 MHz via Germany, inbooming here on 9925 at same time. June 3 at 0002 could tell 6190 had English news; some ACI from music on XEPPM 6185, but avoidable by sidetuning upward and certainly a great improvement over head-on collision which it was doing for the first two months of A-08
** U S A. Further chex of WRMI 9955 on June 2: must be over midday-absorption hump, for at 1950 UT, reception had improved so that WRN programming in English was intelligible.
For those who would like to hear the stations lucky enough to get such a SW relay in NAm, without even asking for it, from http://www.wrn.org/listeners/schedules/schedule.php?ScheduleID=2
here is the schedule between 16 and 21 UT M-F:
1600 Radio New Zealand International: Korero Pacifica
1615 Vatican Radio
1630 Radio Slovakia International
1700 Polish Radio External Service
1730 Channel Africa: Africa Rise and Shine
1800 RTE Ireland "Drivetime"
1830 Radio Prague
1900 Radio Sweden
1930 Radio Australia
2000 Polish Radio
2030 KBS World Radio (Korea)
Checked again at 2107, ``welcome back to Overnight AM``, as if they were just coming back from a break instead of starting the show, talking about ``the paranormal community``; signal a bit better than in the morning, now hitting S9+20. So the refurbished NAm antenna (is it really still at 317 degrees?), seems to be a definite improvement. Listeners to the NW of Miami with decent equipment and motivation may be able to listen to WRMI programs without too much strain.
WRMI is scheduled to switch back to 160 degree antenna at 0000 UT so I retuned at 2357, but must have been too late, as not audible at all. With BFO engaged, about 15 seconds after 0000 heard weak carrier come on, but when I switched to AM it was obviously grinding from the DentroCuban Jamming Command, even tho WRMI is supposed to have English religion on at this hour, unworthy of jamming, or has that changed? Schedule grid at http://www.wrmi.net/images/wrmichart.xls still hasn`t been updated to show Overnight AM, M-F at 21-24, and the mostly Prague and DX shows of 22-24 shifted to 01-03, all of which happened a few weeks ago. Still nothing but jamming audible at 0006 when I gave up
** U S A. WHRI, tho scheduled at least from 1600 on Angel 6, 11785, was not to be heard before 2100, but it was on at 2127 check June 2, so perhaps came on at 2100. Also ran across WHRI on 9615, which is Angel 2, June 2 at 2211 when Peter Sumrall asserted he was standing in front of his TV station in Tulsa, KWHB-47,, ``here in Central Oklahoma``. The poor guy is not only religiously, but geographically challenged
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. CVC, normally dominant on 11665 here was rather weak at 0204 check June 5, and with SAH of about 10 Hz from a station playing ME music --- presumed R. Solh via UAE, as scheduled and just confirmed in England by Mike Barraclough until 0600. I believe they switch to 11675 from 0600 until 1200, also UAE, then 1200-1800 17700 via Skelton
** CANADA. CKZU, 6160, holding up rather late across daytime path, June 4 at 1312 ending CBC news with perpetual plug for Sirius 137 --- but they never mention 6160!! Into local morning show Early Edition with weather for Vancouver and area, hi 18. Weaker than NZ next door on 6170 but no QRM
** CUBA [and non]. RHC 11680, also gets buzzed by MOI Kuwait DRM 11670-11675-11680, at 0205 UT June 5. Could escape most of it by stepping DX-398 up to 11683 in wide bandwidth (as narrow loses RHC too), but what does RHC do to Kuwait? Good strong signal from them, but search of drmna yg finds no mention of it since February; not making much of an impact. For one thing, it`s only in Arabic, which kinda limits their potential audience in NAm. And I believe people have complained about the low bitrate.
RHC, 13760, rather weak at 0210 June 5 in Spanish, with fast SAH of some 15 Hz, much like I have heard earlier in the day. This is during one-hour IBB break between Udorn and Saipan usage of 13760, but VOK is scheduled straight thru including Spanish too on 28 degrees at 0200. My congratulations to the Commies and the Commies for getting that close to the same frequency
** INDONESIA. VOI back again on 9526, June 3 at 1332, mostly music during Korean hour; fair. Ditto June 4, romantic song at 1320
** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 9940, June 4 at 1318 with jamming pulses mixing with Korean. That`s North Korea Reform Radio, scheduled daily via Tainan, Taiwan, at 2 degrees, 1300-1330
** RUSSIA [and non]. Quick check of some VOR English to NAm frequencies, June 5 at 0213: 9480 Germany VG, 9860 Vatican good, 15425 Pet-Kam fair
** SRI LANKA. 15745, June 5 at 0208 weak, fluttery talk, seemed English, into music. Wish I had time to dig deeper, but it must be the only station scheduled here, SLBC, Ekala, 35 kW and 350 degrees per Aoki
** U S A [and non]. Tuesday June 3 at 0637 I was surprised to hear Russian on 5920, so is it R. Rossii, Kamchatka, scheduled 22 hours a day? But the signal is too strong, and no QRM from WBOH. In fact, the modulation is crummy, so it must be WBOH! Yes, on their schedule M-F at 0635 for 5 minutes is ``The Spoken Word of God – in Russian``, 0640-0700 not being accounted for. But at 0639 went to kids` hymn in English with piano accompaniment, and clinching the ID, // WTJC 9370; 0641 ``How Great Thou Art,`` in English, not ``Kak Tebye Li`` (sp?) as I used to hear it rendered in Russian on HCJB.
The weekday program schedule at http://www.fbnradio.com/new_page_copy(1).htm
does not flag any other programming during the 24 hours as not being in English. Nothing on Saturday either, but on Sunday there are quarter-hours of Spanish ``Word of Life`` at 1000 and UT Monday 0030. The schedule must be in EDT of UT-4, tho not specified by this so-called international broadcaster. In winter it would be UT -5.
I just lucked into the Russian bit, but I had been wondering about Chuck Bolland`s log of Russia on 5920 at 1000 Monday June 2, with no mention of WBOH QRM, even tho it is aimed 170 degrees toward him, but he did report R. Rossii IDs, and thinks WBOH must have been off
** U S A [and non]. Checking WRMI, 9955, June 3: DentroCuban Jamming Command grind went off at 1401*; WRMI came on with R. Prague in English a semi-minute later, but only poor signal. At 1959, 9955 was JBA with fades but WRN ID heard
** BIAFRA [non]. Per FCC info, V. of Biafra International`s new frequency starting this week will be 15280 instead of previously planned 15665, Fridays only at 2000-2100 in English and Ibo, from WHRI, 250 kW at 87 degrees, ex-17650. To be confirmed
** CHINA. Firedrake again invades the 20m hamband! June 5 at 1320 found a good signal from it on 14010, presumably against Sound of Hope, but nothing of that audible underneath, even during the slow segment with conch shell-sounding instrument at 1325. Firedrake was not to be found on 13970, 14410, usual spots, nor 12260 or anywhere in the low 13`s, but it was // 12040 and several others. Did not hear any ham CW near 14010, only higher in the band. At 1400, went to open carrier, and I assumed would resume at 1405, but when rechecked at 1413 it was off.
However, the next day, June 6 at 1301 onwards, no FD on 14010. But on 14410 there was open carrier and FD resumed at 1304:40, still audible at 1335, // 15285 but not synchronized, 14410 running a split second behind 15285. So one wonders if 14010 was a miskeying by SOH and/or FD. However, DARC Intruder Watch recently caught FD on several frequencies inside the 20m band, 14000, 14005, 14010, 14030, 14050, 14090, up to three at once
** INDONESIA. Another day with VOI on 9526, at 1248 check June 6 with music
** SPAIN [non]. REE, 15170 via Costa Rica, Friday June 6 at 1240 introducing Informaciones en Catalán, Gallego y Vasco --- but then in first segment supposed to be Catalan, instead played a song in Castilian, without apology or explanation. 1245 into Galician news, which is always the most reliable of the three; 1250 intro in Basque but then as usual news summary in Castilian about Basque country, 1254 closing in Basque, back to Castilian for promo of Nuestra Música
** TINIAN. 13760, June 6 at 0607 M&W in Chinese, but unstable carrier kept breaking up, distorted; went off the air for a few seconds at 0608. While VOK uses this frequency a lot, per Aoki at this hour it`s RFA in Chinese. Such a defect one would not expect from IBB but the breakup did not seem like jamming from another transmitter, and there was no separate jamming of the usual sort audible
** U K [non]. BBC Mundo Radio, Spanish via WHRI 9410 weekdays at 12-13: Still has classical music fill during last half on M/W/F, checked Friday June 6 at 1249 in a movement from Mendelssohn`s Octet, which is the same as I heard weeks ago. Not only do they play the same music M/W/F of a single week, but their selexion is so limited that there are also repeats from previous weeks. 1257:30 seguéd to something else, destined to be chopped off two minutes later, as always unannounced
** LAOS [non]. Altho on unlisted 11750 last Sunday June 1, Hmong Lao Radio via WHRI was back on usual 11785, Saturday June 7, *1300:30 joining music in progress, but then mostly talk including some untranslatable English words dealing with legal matters, Vung Pao`s court battle, I suppose. 1353 recheck, traditional rustic singing with fauna chirps in background. 100 kW transmitter does not override the FE QRM as well as 250 used to, but fortunately this was a very poor FE morning, with hardly any Firedrake heard anywhere. 1359 OCS and WHRI ID, 1400 into Hmong World Christian Radio
** MADAGASCAR. June 7 at 1313 heard something weak I had not noticed before on 15115, drumming and wailing, then M&W talk sort of Arabic-sounding, but not. Per EiBi this is VOA in Somali at 13-14
** U S A. VOA Greenville with another messup. 17530 is supposed to be English news at 1400-1430, but June 7 at 1406 I found an open carrier; 1408:45 joined music fill, 1415 C&W gospel song about Jesus! Violating separation of church and state. 1417 announcement in French! Then Aretha-like singer with ``Almost Persuaded``; 1421 another French back announcement, of that song. 1423 ``Midnight Train to Georgia``. 1430 YDD sign-off. Did Greenville axually lose the program feed from Washington and have to substitute something like this? French is not even sked on VOA anywhere near this time, nor Creole, but this wasn`t Creole
** U S A. 13800, June 7 at 1403, quena music but not from HCJB, // 15130 and 17555, WYFR of course, 1404 into FR theme, La Biblia Habla. They should play a lot more Andean music and forget the Bible stuff; fat chance. I can hardly wait to hear Harold Camping in DRM
** CHINA. Not much Firedrake above 12 MHz audible June 10 at 1308, but weakly in on 14410 against Sound of Hope; none found within the 20m hamband
** CUBA. RHC once again with nothing but open carrier on 11760, while 9550, 11805, 12000, 13680, 13760, 15370 were funxioning normally in Spanish, 1436 June 9
** INDONESIA [and non]. VOI, 9526, June 9 at 1438 making big het with CRI in Russian toward NAm on 9525
** KOREA NORTH. 13650, June 10 at 1306 choral music in DPRK style, 1307 talk in Chinese, so quite sure it is VOK as scheduled, 238 degrees from Kujang per Aoki; altho that also shows CRI itself in Chinese via Urumqi, 270 degrees
** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 9940 with strong open carrier June 10 at 1252; 1259 pulse jamming becomes audible before 1300 start of North Korea Reform Radio, via Taiwan, with Carmen theme, Korean talk
** NETHERLANDS [non]. June 9 was the first day of special RNW broadcasts of ``the national team`` -- I guess playing some silly ballgame, never revealed what in the DXLD 8-068 item from Media Network! Tuned in 17765 at 1842 when my ear was caught by a big signal on a normally clear frequency as a crowd were singing the Netherlands national anthem, 1843 into announcement in Dutch. 17765 is Guiana French at 300 degrees toward us. Still going at 2033 check when I also tried 15650, very weak from Issoudun, France southwards, and I could not even tell if WBCQ was on the 15420 air, the frequency RNW first planned to use. Next date for all this, whatever it is: June 13
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. WWLS 640 IBOC was off when checked June 9 at 1857, clearing 650, and mostly clear 630 which also gets it from much weaker here KMKI 620 in The Metroplex. It`s also been sporadic around KTOK 1000, but was running at this time, and also audible around KFAQ 1170 Tulsa
** TAIWAN [and non]. 11560, June 10 at 1258 with Hail Marys from WEWN, fast SAH from another station under, which per Aoki is Family Radio via Hu Wei, Taiwan, in English, 100 kW, 285 degrees. Catholix vs Protestants!
** TIBET [non]. 11775 with Firedrake making 4 Hz SAH over Defunct Gene Scott, Anguilla, June 10 at 1302, but no trace of its real target: AIR Tibetan via Goa, 1215-1330, 250 kW at 25 degrees, per Aoki
** U S A. Perhaps WHRI has started running Angel 6, 11785 on its entire schedule instead of with large gaps on weekday mornings: anyway, Monday June 9 it was on with gospel rock at 1436, bad news for Firedrake.
But WHRI missing from scheduled 11785 again, June 10 at 1301 and 1439 checks. At 1301, Firedrake and VOA Chinese via Thailand were dominating
** AUSTRIA [non]. Checking out report that English was missing from Ö1, June 11 at 1515 there it was starting after German via Sackville on 13775, as scheduled, which is unnecessarily complex, but per EiBI:
1505 1520 Mo AUT Radio Austria Int. E WNA 13775/CAN
1505 1530 SaSu AUT Radio Austria Int. E WNA 13775/CAN
1515 1530 Tu-Fr AUT Radio Austria Int. E WNA 13775/CAN
1535 1600 SaSu AUT Radio Austria Int. E WNA 13775/CAN
1545 1600 Mo-Fr AUT Radio Austria Int. E WNA 13775/CAN
Note: you might think that what happens in the second half hour mirrors what happens in the first half hour, and you would be wrong. The rest of each full hour is occupied by German
** CHINA. Must be solsticial conditions despite pitiful solar flux that account for Firedrake on 17 MHz at 13 UT. Specifically, 17565 at 1308, also audible on 17705, but not on the latter at 1338 recheck. 17565, presumably against V. of Tibet, was stronger than Spain shortpath on 17595
** CUBA. RHC Spanish on 11680 June 12 at 1426 producing SAH with another station in music, but RHC cut off after a few seconds. Not scheduled on 11680 at this hour, but messing around again
** JAPAN [and non]. NHK World Network, Radio Japan, as the ID goes, 11705 via Canada, June 12 at 1426 accompanied by pre-echo direct from Yamata, much weaker but certainly audible
** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 11735.1, June 12 at 1427 in Korean with low het, VOK versus? Per online skeds it`s either R. Liberty Biblis, Germany in Russian, or Brasil. RNA 11780 was in well, so likely R. Nova Visão if on
** MEXICO. XEQM, 6104.9, June 12: at first check 1308 just a mess on frequency and did not hear a het of 200-400 Hz as required by previous reports of Mérida`s varied frequency; 1335 Firedrake was audible. That was gone by 1350, just a very weak signal from presumed XEQM. This was probably even closer to 6105.0 but not quite. Talk intonation seemed to be Spanish but could not recognize any words to be sure. 1352, a bit of ``When You Wish Upon A Star`` music underneath; 1354 just music with a beat; 1400 produced announcement, probably ID, again seemed Spanish but not positive, just too poor. Signal still in at 1421, momentarily QRMed by ``running water`` ute; and still at 1433. Those a little closer to Yucatán and/or with a bit better gain, S/N ratio should get this OK even in the daytime. Julián Santiago phoned the station and found out they have been back on the air, with lapses, for two months, the old 250 watt transmitter. They want to get a new transmitter and run 24 hours, half of that in Maya language, which is already running on XEMQ 810, but there are other stations in their group, and it`s not clear which one they are relaying now when in Spanish, and whether they are putting Maya on SW yet. I want to know exactly what ID is to be heard on 6105v
** SAUDI ARABIA. BSKSA, 15170, very weak June 12 at 0530 with Qur`an, but could not hear any buzzing which used to be all one could hear. Apparently buzz has been fixed, tnx to complaint by Mike Barraclough via HFCC, which got a reply June 9 from BSKSA that they had worked on it
** U S A. Surprised to hear Arabic on 17690, at quick check 1831 UT Wednesday June 11. A new clandestine service, and/or was it really WHRA as scheduled? No and Yes: WHR ID in English at 1859. Looked up later on the WHR online skeds, we see this:
1830 - 1835 2:30 PM - 2:35 PM Mo,Tu,We,Th,Fr Bible Pathway Rich Hash 17.690 Mhz
1835 - 1840 2:35 PM - 2:40 PM Mo,Tu,We,Th,Fr Nice Jewish Boy Jonathan Cahn 17.690 Mhz
One of the very annoying things about WHR schedules is that they do not explicitly state language of each listing, often given in English when they are not really in English! Website for show per linx page is http://www.biblepathway.org/
And at first glance, they are in English, nothing about Arabic, but if you look at the Daily Devotional linx, we do find Arabic
http://www.biblepathway.org/Arabic/TodaysDevotional.html
and several other languages, which I suppose could appear on WHRA at this time: English, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish?
Maybe not all of them. This page:
http://www.biblepathway.org/English/Ministry-Radio.html
gives SW schedule times on WRMI, KWHR, WHRI and WHRA, including these two designated Arabic:
WHRA Angel 5 Middle East, North Africa (Arabic) 1:30PM Mon-Fri ET 1830 Mon-Fri UTC 15.670 Mhz Jerusalem: 9:30PM
WHRA Angel 5 Middle East, North Africa (Arabic) 2:30PM Tue-Fri ET 1930 Tue-Fri UTC 11.785 Mhz Jerusalem: 10:30PM
Trouble is, ET/UT conversions are obviously for ST, not DST, so is the 1830 UT broadcast I heard now the one called ``1930``? WHRA sked currently shows both 1830 and 1930 as well as 1705. Wrong frequencies, too. BP sked is far out of date, still showing Venezuela on an even timezone! And why of all Arabic-speaking cities, do they pick out Jerusalem? And why don`t they call it Al-Quds? And why in this case, do they have a 3-hour summer-time difference between UT and Israel even tho ET/UT are 5 hours apart instead of 4? God apparently has not granted them the power to figure out time zones correctly.
At the bottom of the page B.P. admits it is trying to save ``country after country`` from being ``taken over by Islam``. Bible, Kor`an, Torah/Talmud --- they`re all Abrahamic monotheists, well, with subdivisions in the case of the Christians
** U S A. WBCQ absent from 9330 Brother Scare service, checked June 12 at 1431
** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, Albanian to NAm at 2300-2430, finally clear of WWRB QRM, June 12 at 2330 check as Tirana moved from 9390 to 9345, leaving WWRB to blast Brother Scare sidebands away from 9385 an hour later than its authorized 2300 closing
** BIAFRA [non]. V. of Biafra International remained on WHRI 17650, Friday June 13, contrary to FCC-scheduled change to 15280 supposed to start in June. Tuned in at 1959 for early false-start. Not only did the transmitter drop off the air several times --- I thought they might belatedly be remembering to switch to 15280 --- but also the audio feed had annoying internet artifacts and glitches, also starting over. Finally at 2003 started once again and seemed to keep going, but I couldn`t keep listening. It was still on 17650 when I caught the closing at 2058, WHRI ID. Meanwhile at 2000, WHRI was also on 15665 but with other programming. That had been the previously planned replacement for 17650 instead of 15280. So what will happen next Friday?
** CHINA [and non]. Some Firedrake observations: 9865, June 12 at 1840, fair vs RFA Chinese via Tinian. 14410, June 13 at 1530, VG signal against no sign of Sound of Hope, stronger than 15285, 12040, 11990, and weak 17565. June 14 at 1420 the latter was on 17550 instead, no doubt following the peregrinations of V. of Tibet
** CUBA. No further sign of Cuban music tests on 17660 or 15460 since June 7, yet June 12 at 1832 I could still hear some jamming on 15460, just in case. Also lite jamming on 6100 at 0621 June 14, vs nothing; R. República is on there evenings, and has also been a madrugada WHRI test frequency for Cuban music. See also UNIDENTIFIED 7365
** MEXICO. Looking for Mérida: June 14 at 0621 could only hear BBC French via Ascension on 6105, 0600-0630, no het, so not 24 hours or just too weak?
** RUSSIA. VOR WS in English, 7330, at 1411 June 14, and not making it on 19m where I had heard it occasionally during this hour. Per Aoki, 7330 is Vladivostok-Rasdolnoy at 230 degrees, on air long hours but English during this hour only, 1420 VOR promo
** U S A. Some WBCQ observations: 15420-CUSB was on the air with newest WORLD OF RADIO 1412 during its newly rescheduled semihour, Wednesday June 11 at 2113 check. 9330, now dedicated to Brother Scare, was missing June 12 not only at 1431, but still at 1840 check; back on by next check at 0030 UT Friday June 13, but gone again June 14 at 1412. At 0030 Friday I was really checking 7415 for WORLD OF RADIO, which did not start until 0034, upcut after Goddess running late, long pause, standard ID and another long pause
** U S A. Happened to tune by 17690 again Thursday June 12 when Arabic was on WHRI again, listed as Bible Pathways. At 1834 same announcer switched to English for address: P O Box 6007, Milton TN 37118, USA. However Googling this leads nowhere, and the contact address on the http://www.biblepathways.org is a different box in Murfreesboro TN. At 1835 into ecumenically scheduled ``Nice Jewish Boy`` show, except they are both no doubt really Christians of some ilk.
11785, WHRI, supposedly on all the way from 13 to 24, missing at 1837 check June 12 and at 1336 June 13. See also UNIDENTIFIED 7365; BIAFRA [non]
** CUBA. Heavy jamming on 6100, June 16 at 0601 check against nothing --- R. República is on 6100 for only two hours in evening, and WHRI has tested Cuban music recently around 0900-1300. At 1342, also jamming on 7365 but no WHRI Cuban music audible this date; previously ran until 1500. 7365 jamming was at about same level as against R. Martí on 7405, also inaudible tho supposedly runs until 1400. At 1436 recheck, jamming still on 7365, but jamming gone from 7405. BTW, WHRI 11785 was not on the air at this time
** CUBA. DentroCuban Jamming Command still running residual pulses on 7365, June 19 at 1258 check, tho WHRI Cuban music tests are no longer there.
OTOH, RHC missing from 9550, June 19 at 1316; all the other frequencies on 11, 12, 13 and 15 MHz were on as usual
** KOREA NORTH. VOK, 11710, strong enough to audiblize its spur on 11644.1, June 19 at 1310 in English to NAm. The spur more distorted than the fundamental. Also could detect matching spur carrier on 11776, but buried under PMS, Firedrake, and Firedrake victim. Also audible on // 9335 and // 13760 for Europe, within a SAH of RHC and underneath it.
KCBS domestic service with choral music on 11679.8, June 19 at 1312. VOK Chinese on 11735+ a smidgin above at 1325 June 19
** NIGERIA. Usually hear nothing in summer on 9690 in the mornings, tho on a good winter day AIR sesquihour in English to SE Asia at 1330 sometimes makes it. So surprised to find fair signal with hilife music, June 16 at 1346; soon IDed at 1348 as V. of Nigeria. For a while there was a fast SAH, possibly India. Then at 1351 the VON signal suddenly increased to good S9+20 level, as if they had pumped up the power or made an antenna switch, but maybe just a propagational quirk. 1353 talked about singer Victor Olaya (sp?) from the 1960s. Modulation was at good level, but somewhat distorted; outro program ``Time for Hilife``. 1359 live YL announcer took over, said that show is Mondays at 1330, ID, 1400 she went into newscast, as signal was fading down again, and there was a pause of at least 30 seconds within, not sure if program feed problem, or she was hunting for copy. A shorter pause later before ending at 1405, with ID, into discussion show, but unreadable by 1415, still audible at 1434. Wonder if it could have been by longpath. No sign of this in the 1330-1355 period June 19
** VENEZUELA [non]. Sunday, June 15 observations of Aló, Presidente service via Cuba: at 1418 on 13750 and 17750 synchronized, but weaker 11670 with a SAH was unsynchronized, making an echo with the others. No signal on 13680. 11875 had open carrier, which suddenly brought up program audio in progress at 1432 // 13750
** CUBA. DentroCuban Jamming Command is crazy, jamming frequencies with nothing on them. A quick bandscan June 20 at 0615 found the same raspy pulsing at the rate of two per second on these frequencies: 9840, 11775, and by 0622 also on 7365, 6100. I did not use a second receiver to see if they were synchronized, but probably were. As recently pointed out, 6100 is used at other times, only two hours a day, by R. República, and was also testing Cuban music later in the night from WHRI. 7365 is R. Martí at other hours and formerly Cuban music via WHRI until 1500. 11775 is R. Martí, only earlier in the evening.
But 9840? No targets known there, but since it is a WHRI frequency, currently available at 1300-2000 per HFCC, I suspect this points to yet another previous Cuban music test we may have missed. Checked at 1752 June 20, 9840 was on with usual WHRI gospel rock music fill
** CUBA [and non]. Tnx to a tip from Jean-Michel Aubier in France, that R. República was on both 6135 and 5940 from *2200 June 21, I rushed to check out new 5940 at 2355 UT. Yes, still on then and beneath heavy jamming on both; as far as I could tell the two were // and synchronized, which has not been the case when RR was running from both DTK and VTC facilities in Europe. Therefore, I suspect new 5940 is also coming from Rampisham, as RR steps up its output to dilute the effectiveness of the DentroCuban Jamming Command. At 2359 there was ``Atención``, presumably a frequency change announcement, but could not copy it due to jamming. Both 5940 and 6135 went off at exactly 0000, and by the time I had retuned one receiver to 6155, it was already going there as per usual schedule.
Then I looked around for a successor to 5940, but none found on 49 or 41m; altho jamming against nothing was then found on 5890, and it diminished in level by 0005. Also heavier jamming on 9885, both of which point to VOA Spanish target --- except neither starts until 0030, and with non-Cuban programming at the outset. Heavy splatter from WWCR/DGS 5935 started at 0000, but as far as I could tell the jamming was no longer on 5940.
The previous addition to RR was 5955 but nothing on there at this hour; it had been observed May 22 at 0100-0200 Tue-Sat via Nauen
** ECUADOR. HCJB is really in a rut, a captive of its unsupervised automation system. As I previously noted a few years before, when the Spanish service on 9745 signs off, this still happens: June 21 at 0501 Ecuadorian national anthem in progress, ending at 0503. Time to turn off the transmitter, right? Wrong. After a few seconds pause, starts playing an Andean music piece for about 70 seconds, and THEN the transmitter cuts off while that music is still playing. Could be a studio silence-sensor kicks in with such fill music instead of realizing it is time to quit, and a separate timer on the transmitter is set to turn off one minute too late
** LAOS [non]. Hmong World Christian Radio, presumed, Saturday June 21 at 1406 on WHRI 11785, playing the same rustic singing with frogs(?) chirping in background that we also hear on Hmong Lao Radio during the previous hour. Makes one wonder just how closely related these two programs are
** NETHERLANDS [non]. As you may know, I could not care less about stupid ballgames, but after dining at a restaurant which had some European soccer championship up on a screen, as it was shown in the USA even on ABC-TV, Russia leading 1-0 at that point, I inevitably ran across some of RNW`s special coverage during a routine SW bandscan.
June 21 at 2119, WWCR/DGS 13845 was suffering from huge continuous crackling noise which also marred sidebands more than usual as far as 13835 and 13855, the latter bothering RNW in Dutch; this was not synchronized with strong 17765 and weak 17485. At 2122 I noticed a much stronger //, Sackville 11640, on for this occasion only, no trace of anything under it, during sad solo singing --- imagine that, MUSIC on RNW`s Dutch service!! ID, `Dit is de Wereldomroep`, but did not say which one; 2124 a vaguely familiar song in English! So mutch for Dutch music. This too was of a lamentational nature, so I concluded that Netherlands must have lost. This matters only insofar as Lowcountrypeople believe it does; in reality, it is better for a nation to lose such a contest, so it may then concentrate on something that really matters to national achievement, e.g. scientific research, the arts, freedom
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI`s newer DRM transmitter is also capable of AM, and that was evident June 21 at 0421 when I found BOTH RNZI frequencies, 15720 and 13730 running AM! Some show about downloading songs, good reception on both. But what will the poor Pacific Island relayers do when the DRM frequency comes in on AM instead? Do their receivers automatically switch to AM? Then I look for an explanation on the RNZI website but only find this referring to six days earlier, not exactly applicable now:
``21 Jun, 2008 09:15 UTC --- There will be no DRM transmission on Sunday 15 June due repairs being carried out to the AM transmitter``
** RUSSIA [and non]. VOR, English on 13635 via Pet-Kam to WNAm, inbooming June 21 at 0423 during talk about a St. Pete music festival, but there were occasional split-second audio dropouts. During the following semihour, 13635 was better than 9450 via Germany
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. Ran across Brother Scare on a frequency new to me, fair-poor 11520, June 21 at 2126; is it // WWRB 9385? No, but he is talking on same subject, prophecy of inevitable armed conflict between US and Iran before Bush is out (do we need this crap to muddy the waters, or contribute in the minutest way to it possibly happening?).
So may be same program but unsynchronized from different sites. I forced myself to keep listening, and eventually determined that 11520 was running 2 minutes and 48 seconds behind 9385! That`s a lot of delay, even if multiple satellites, internet and digital processing are all involved.
It so happened that B.S. went on to talk about his current SW schedule, so this broadcast was of some usefulness after all. Here is how he gave it, never mentioning timezone! But probably EDT of UT -4; my comments in brackets:
3185, 1-9 am [WWRB]
5110, all-night [WBCQ]
5745, 8 pm - 1 am [WWRB]
6110, 10 am - noon [DTK]
6175, 3-5 pm [DTK]
6890, 6 pm - midnight [WWRB]
7415, 9-11 pm [WBCQ – surely not every night now, just filling in?]
9265, Sat 10 am - 2 pm [? Inactive WMLK scheduled from 1600 UT; WINB
only until 1200]
9330, all-day [WBCQ]
9385, all-day [WWRB]
11520, 5-6 pm daily [no listings at all for this on any of the online
skeds; but suspect DTK; = 21-22 UT when I heard it]
13570, 2-3 pm daily [WINB]
13810, 10-11 am daily [DTK]
17435, 11 am - noon daily [sic, means 17485, DTK]
A few minutes later he gave the SW sked again in a different form, mixing local time and UTC, sic:
12-9 am, 3185 [WWRB]
3-11 pm, 7415 [WBCQ; he still thinx he has 8 hours straight on WBCQ
rather than here and there!]
9 pm-8 am, 5110 [WBCQ]
7 pm-midnight, 5745 [WWRB]
14 UTC, 6110 [DTK; no end times given]
19-21 UTC, 6175 [DTK]
6 pm-midnight, 6890 [WWRB]
8 am-9 pm, 9330 [WBCQ]
9 pm-7 pm, 9385 [sic, means 9 am-7 pm; WWRB]
14 UTC, 13810 [DTK]
15 UTC, 17485 [DTK, got the frequency right this time]
Yes, I know, DTK is now supposed to be called M&B. Note latest addition 11520 is missing from second version, and so is 9265. I`ll leave it to others to pick out the conflicts between the two versions other than those and 7415. Said his total SW airtime is now 144 hours per day. And he is on 133 stations around the world, 31 of which run him all-night. I heard him on WOAI 1200 recently plus IBOCs; has Clear Channel no shame? Also plugged his availability on cellphones, for a long-distance call anytime to 712-432-7250. Thank a god for that!
** U K. A good time to hear From Our Own Correspondent on that antiquated medium, SW, from BBCWS, is UT Saturdays 0432 on 9410, 62 degrees from Rampisham, as I did June 21 instead of webcast
** U S A [and non]. WWCR/DGS service, 13845, suffering from revival of heavy continuous crackling on audio, June 21 at 2119, pushing sidebands further than usual to 13835 and 13855, latter bothering R. Netherlands soccer special. I could also hear the crackling on Anguilla 11775, but much less of it. They may have better audio filtering, but taking the same defective satellite feed from HQ in LA. I assume uplink dish is not aimed accurately, altho downlink dish misalignments could add to the problem. This has been a recurring problem for years with The University Network; they obviously don`t care or don`t know how to fix it. None of the Costa Rican frequencies were audible to look for crackling there too
** CHINA. 9855, June 25 at 1223 Chinese W&M conversing, with slight echo, which I associate with short path/long path. The only thing scheduled per Aoki is:
9855 CHINA RADIO INTER. 1200-1257 1234567 Chinese 500 215 Beijing CHN
9855 CHINA RADIO INTER. 1300-1357 1234567 Chinese 500 215 Beijing CHN 11627E 3957N CRI a08
How pleasant to find a Chinese-language station which is not subject to Firedrake jamming!
** CHINA [and non] June 25 at 1231 on 17705 heard some weak S Asian singing, occasionally spiking up to listenable level. Aoki lists:
17705*ALL INDIA RADIO 1145-1315 1234567 Chinese 500 58 Bangalore IND 7713E 1314N AIR a08
And I was not hearing Firedrake, which is the usual case, as the paranoid Chicom don`t allow India to speak to China, signified by the asterisk. However, at 1321 recheck there was Firedrake, weaker than // 17565 against V. of Tibet. No AIR or anything else is supposed to be on 17705 after 1315, so is there something new to be jammed or just faded up in meantime and overrunning?
** CUBA [and non]. Hi Jeff, Nothing but heavy jamming on 9955 last night (UT Thursday June 26) 0530. Is WORLD OF RADIO still on then or have you changed to a Cuban program? (Glenn to Jeff White, WRMI, via DXLD)
Glenn: WOR is still on then, but of course that's going south. Interestingly, I got an e-mail from Sheryl Paszkiewicz in Wisconsin saying she had very good reception of 9955 last night at 0200, and recently reception has been good there of 9955 in the evenings -- which I thought was interesting since that's on the southern antenna
Tnx a lot, Arnie! Your DX show doesn`t get jammed; why should mine? This was heavy grinding overlaying 2-per-second pulses. On other occasions, WRMI has not been jammed at this hour
** FRANCE [non]. ``RFI Musique`` with nice eclectic selection, some in French, English, Mideastern, on 15515, Sunday June 22 from 1235 tune-in, pause for timesignal at 1300, more music. Don`t know how long past 1300 it lasted, but gone when rechecked some time after 1330. Music was not announced, just canned IDs at least in English, French and Spanish. Per all online schedules, this frequency is supposed to be on only at 1200-1230 in Spanish, daily, via Guiana French, 250 kW at 270 degrees to CAm. This seems like the fill music RFI typically runs during strikes; there was one last week, supposed to last only one or two days. Is it still going? But why would they add this extra transmission, anyway?
RFI, 15515 via Guiana French, tuned in at 1229 June 25 to hear some high-energy music just before abrupt cutoff at 1230* without so much as an au-revoir. One June 22 this stayed on past 1300
** INDONESIA. VOI back on nominal 9525 (9524.96, says Ron Howard), June 25 at 1220 in Japanese, drumming. But June 26 at 1300 transitioning from Japanese to Korean, on 9526 again, and marred by previously unheard big continuous tone with several carrier peaks on the high side, no other modulation detectable, so I think this is a new defect coming out of the VOI transmitter itself. Not the CRI het from 9525 which does not start until 1400
** U S A. WTJC, 9370, playing a military medley, Wednesday June 25 at 1255, such as Air Force Hymn going at 1257 to Marine Corps Hymn, 1300 news. Maybe just fill as does not appear on their program schedule for 8:55 am at http://www.fbnradio.com/new_page_copy(1).htm

SINGAPORE R.S.I. on 6080. current events stuff at 1115. Poor. Was roaring in here at beginning of week
SINGAPORE (relay) BBC-W.S. on 9605. 1430 - Hd w/ ID . was in Chinese dialect, with some clips in EG and overdub Chinese translation. Struggling to get thruogh heavy jamming from "FireDrake" .
USA - WWCR 12160 Hd. 1630 w/ Glenn's DX show, but very tough due to poor condx.Fair to poor and choppy today. But at least no one is jamming this frequency, as is the case with WRMI.
NEW ZEALAND - RNZI 15720 New Zealand and a few signals from south about only thing on band. 2304 with local wx : "Fine today, but developing rain tomorrow night", M anncr.
AUSTRALIA R. Australia 17785 poor at 2330, but gathering strength just before close at midnight UTC. Signals from Pacific and Cuba about all happening atm.

R. Spaceshuttle Int. via WMR Karup, Denmark is heard on 5814.98 kHz now
0700. Should be on until 1000 and again 1900-2300.
There are quite a variety of signals being broadcast in the LW band. We've previously discussed several aspects of NDBs. Also down below MW are Navtex services. These are text messages sent over analog radio intended for reception by ships at sea. They are primarily weather data and information concerning hazards to navigation.
Since these are text messages and not audio, it is necessary to connect the audio output of the radio to the audio input on a computer and run some kind of software to decode the messages. There are many programs available to decode Navtex and other types of non-audible messages/data sent via analog radio signal.
I use SEATTY, mostly because it records the raw decoded data and time tags it with the UTC time it was received. Some other programs only record messages that were received mostly intact. By looking through the raw logs it is sometimes possible to detect fractions of a message that will allow you to determine the origin.
Typical Navtex messages are sent on a nominal frequency of 518kHz. The signal is right in the vicinity of 518kHz, so unless your radio has a Data mode designed for just this kind of signal, you'll have to use SSB and off tune the frequency to move the modulated audio signal into the range expected by the software you're using. Alternatively, you can use CW mode and adjust the BFO to move the audio to the expected range.
The stations broadcast on a preset schedule that is arranged to keep stations near each other from broadcasting at the same time.
Here's a sample of a complete message.

Every message begins with “ZCZC”.
Following on the same line is a designator for the sending station. There are 16 zones worldwide. Within each zone the transmitting stations are assigned a single letter identifier. Unfortunately, it is assumed a receiving station will not be getting messages from outside the zone they're in, so no zone indicator is included with the message. This can make it difficult to ID messages from distant stations. This message is from zone IV, in which 'G' designates New Orleans.
Next is an indicator of the type of message. In this case, 'A' indicates a navigational warning.
Following is the message number. This identifies a specific message. If the message is repeated at a later time, it will have the same message number.
The end of the message is designated by “NNNN”.
Below is a somewhat less intact message I received on 15 June. Almost all of the messages broadcast on 518kHz are in English. Just a couple stations use this frequency to broadcast in any other language. According to my resources, Chile is the only country that sends messages in Spanish on 518kHz.

Toward the beginning, on the line marked 08:18:26, is the intact text “TALCAHUANO RADIO/CBT”. Talcahuano is one of the Chilean Navtex stations, about 4500 miles from my location in Orlando.
Bits and pieces of the following message are intact, including the web address of the Chilean Navy, which is responsible for running the Navtex stations in Chile. Also, the message start “ZCZC JK_PW” is slightly garbled, but 'J' is the designator for Talcahuano when broadcasting Spanish.
On the line marked 08:33:04 is part of a station identification I'm fairly certain is supposed to be “PUERTO MONTT RADIO/CBP”. Puerto Montt is another Chilean Navtex station, about 300 miles south of Talcahuano.
A bit of interpolation and guesswork can be involved in identifying partial receptions like this one. In this case, I have a fairly high degree of confidence in claiming reception from Talcahuano. I am not nearly as confident about the Puerto Montt recpetion and have not officially logged it.
This month we have a small column. I guess you guys are enjoying the summer away from the computer. Please put NBN or Internet Radio in the subject. I go through the daily digests to put the column together and I scan the index at the top. I don’t read all the posts and if it doesn’t say something about Internet radio it will not make the column. Thanks!

No Longer on the Air, But Still WHAV
6.06.2008
An Internet audio service says it has won protection for the call letters WHAV
so that no radio station can “steal” part of the local community’s heritage.
“The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded WHAV federal protection from
service mark infringement,” states the station. “Federal registration was sought
to ensure the call letters would forever be associated with audio broadcasting
in Haverhill, Mass.”
It explains that these calls were once used by the Haverhill Police shortwave
station, and later turned over to a broadcast station in 1947. The organization
has posted an extensive and interesting history of the call letters and its
related owners.
“The letters remained in use through several owners until 2002, when they were
abandoned. COCO+CO. received a service mark for the call letters in 2004 for its
Internet and cable television station from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
WHAV President/GM Tim Coco says in the announcement, “Federal registration of
the WHAV name was necessary to prevent another radio station elsewhere in the
country from adopting the calls and stealing a portion of Haverhill’s heritage.”
The company airs a “Soft Gold” format online and says it has a strong Web
presence as well as access to cable subscribers in several local communities.
It said the application for a service mark was reviewed and approved by the
Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks.

103.5 CKCH Sydney NS now on the air under the brand "103.5 The Eagle". Format is today's best country.
Interestingly, the local semi-pro hockey team is the "Cape Breton Screaming Eagles".
I wonder how long AMer 1270 CJCB will be able to hold out as a C&W station. The market is way too small for two C&W stations. With present CRTC rules, MBS Radio, owners of CJCB, could not flip CJCB to FM because they already own two FM stations in the market - CKPE and CHER.
Of course, MBS radio might try begging and pleading for the CRTC to grant an exemption. For that matter, the CRTC might change the rules anyway in the near future.
heard at conimicut point park beach on eton e-100 nekid warwick R.I.
107.5 WFNK Lewiston Maine 11:04 AM EDT battle for the channel with WFCC cape cod faded up to hear frank FM portland maine had been fighting it out with WFCC over two hours while i was at park. Also heard it 2 days ago wasn't able to ID it till today. 6/01/08

First these Notes:
WHOM 949 NH 97.5 (country) NH and frank FM 107.5 Portland Maine all made honorable vistits this AM (all relogs). The NH opening which also has a new logging was open when i arrived about 9:20 AM. started closing after 10 EXCEPT for frank FM 107.5. more on that later. below are NEW Loggings...

Final Note: a bit after 11 AM noted frank 107.5 FM Portland Maine (relog) swapping channel with WFCC Cape Cod. The NH opening had closed by this time. I got a stable portland signal for a few minutes and noted this . moving away from the park bench i was sitting on more then two feet in any direction and portland was gone you must sit on the bench and tilt radio forward 45 degree angle due south for best 107.5 portland reception. th same was noted at time of original Portland 107.5 logging at same location..

Welcome back other then my Maine catch had a few fringe FM catches.
Heard 107.7 WWRX near Groton CT. Radio locator shows a fringe signal possible in the area as it does serve Westerly R.I. but drops quickly as it hits my area although a rooftop antenna would catch it. Another fringe is Pike 100.1 Worcester market and 89.9 Worcester is hard too but these are fringe so I will limit these catches to note worthy mention on barefoot E 100 at
Conimicut Point Park.

The first one decided to send before I even finished the subject line. Bob Smoak told me the FM band was wide open. It was. Even got the Savannah and Beaufort SC WX stations. It's WILD this morning with nearly every frequency jam packed with signals. Well, only 1 regular HD station decoded and that was in the NCE band. WCOS and WSSL only gave me PSD due to the adjacents with strong signals. Someone squirted water in the dragon's mouth and nose..... SSSSSSSSSSSSSS.....
I'll post the few I ID'd as I have to get on the road to Black Mountain, NC.

Too wild on TV low VHF for an ID . I think I got a Kansas station on 3, but I got a Colorado (near Colorado Springs) FM on 95.1. It fuzzed for the calls but got enough.

Had to leave at 1130 Sunday for work, last one was the result of Dashboard DX on way in. Es were still going strong at 1200 when I had to start, had disappeared by 1300 when I finished.
** MEXICO. FMDX: can`t get a decent signal from XEQM 6105v, so I`ll just pick up their FM station! Axually, as always with Sporadic E, one is at the mercy of when openings occur, all or nothing even tho analog.
June 29 at 1640 UT, the MUF was at least channel 5 TV, so I broke out the DX-398 portable, and started checking FM. It helps to be able to manipulate the whip rapidly to avoid all the local QRM. Altho we have some Spanish around here, such as KAMG-LP 92.1 Enid, that language really stands out on other frequencies when bandscanning.
Soon found some on 89.3 at 1644 UT, ID as Radio Energía, Mexican PSA, 1646 live DJ with timecheck, ad for Club de Golf de Yucatán. 1652 phone in sportstalk about soccer and an upcoming game somewhere in Europe. Got back to 89.3 slightly after 1700 so missed ID if any at hourtop, still phoner sportstalk, gone by 1703 and I quit at 1708. This is doubtless XHMIA licensed to Kanasin --- why necessary to rimshot? Near Mérida. Cantú linx to website http://www.radio893.fm/ which shows this is axually called Ultra 89.3, but also with radio energia slogan.
95.3, at 1654 UT June 29, Spanish DJ mentioning Candela in passing, and ``la mera mera Candela 95.3``; gone at 1658, 1701 in and out weakly in talk. So this is XHMH Mérida, which gets relayed on 6105v.
Checked all the other listed Mérida frequencies but above MUF and/or blocked by adjacent/co-channel QRM. One more made it, tho:
92.9, 1656 UT June 29 slogan ``la pirinola [? Not sure of spelling, a name?] gira la radio``. 1658 news headlines about Tíbet, sports, outroed as announced by Jesús Alejandro Torres, for Sistema Nacional de Noticiarios, Grupo IMER, ID but with fades so missing some words:
``XH-Yuc, FM, 92.9, transmite desde . . . Calle 90 . . . con 100 mil watts. . .``. XHYUC is also in Mérida, one of the local public radio outlets, website http://www.yucatanfm.imer.com.mx/ I would like to have heard XERUY on 103.9 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
6/23
I am parked on 88.5 today. So far via E skip WFCR-Amherst, MA,WCII-Spencer, NY, WAMU-Washington DC, WRGX-Sturgeon bay, WI & WGVU-Grand Rapids, MI. I am using the very non selective Satellite 800. I need to get me one of those hot Sony Radios.
While in Bossier City, Louisiana, this past weekend for family business, I did a very quick FM bandscan starting at 12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, June 22nd, using my Sangean DT-200V and a pair of headphones as my antenna.
Here's my list of stations heard in a quick 30 minute period. If I'd had more time and not been so sleepy, I probably could have heard more stations by orienting the headphone cord in
various directions ...

If the list doesn't come out formatted properly, it's most likely because I imported a CSV file into this e-mail.
The Shreveport-Bossier City area is a fantastic location for DX'ing. There aren't a lot of local AM/FM stations and the northern states really boom in loud and clear on AM at night.

WEUS-810, Orlando/Orlovista, FL, changed format on 1 June. The Big 810 used to be an oldies format, playing Scott Shannon's syndicated show 24/7. On 1 June they changed to a religion/talk/brokered-program format.
The station owner, Carl Como, said he loved the oldies format, but he received an offer from Communicom, Inc. that he simply couldn't refuse. The Big 810 never did especially well in the ratings, usually around 19th, but there was apparently a quite unexpected reaction to the format change. Scott Shannon has received many phone calls and emails complaining about the change and his absence from the market.
The new station has dropped the "Big 810" name and is going simply by the call letters, WEUS.
Nothing for sale this month
I got the G6 Buzz Aldrin Aviator radio.
I'll comment more soon after more tests...I can say that , despite it's much shorter antenna than the E5, it is not far behind in sensitivity from 5 to 18 MHz. It also seems quite selective on SW and MW. It's SSB has no LSB/USB choice, but tunes in the slow mode PLL style as opposed to analog in what appears to be very small steps. The result is good clarity, and hams sound good...seems in the same ballpark as the G5. It is very small...very close in size to the E100. It is dual het. The airband is full of unwanted images/mixing products in my crowded AM/FM local stations location. The reception of the ATIS station with it's surface weather obs, and notices to airmen came in fine. The frequency on SW as displayed is more than 1 KHz too high as confirmed by ECSS tuning on SSB...a non issue when tuning on slow (1 KHz at a time with no muting)...on SSB, fast is 1 KHz at a time, slow is a very small increment. On slow, the display reads the truncated 1 KHz number, and does not display the decimal...continued tuning results finally in display jumping to the next KHz. It appears as if the slow tuning covers more than 1 KHz before the display jumps to next KHz as the squeal rises in pitch when reaching the next KHz, and then one can continue tuning with success over the next KHz.
A little more since last night...to be clear, fast tuning using the tuning wheel on SW is 5 Khz steps, slow is 1 Hhz steps...on SSB, fast is 1 KHz steps, slow is a small increment of a 1 KHz step (decimal is not displayed; continued tuning eventually jumps displayed frequency to next KHz). In SSB moide, signal strength always reads as full strength; signal strength works well when not in SSB. Size is almost identical to E100. Selectivity is very good...Voice of Korea on 11710 (the G6 displays too low...center tuned, it will read 11711 in this case) was heard well inbetween a strong religious station on 11715, and another strong station on 11705 this morning. My E5 did not seperate the stations on narrow noticeably better (E5 is muddier in it's narrow setting audio while the G6's audio is much brighter). The news/music switch does not appear to be a narrow/wide switch as stations were audible on an identical swath of the dial in both settings. The set is sensitive, despite it's significantly smaller antenna than the E5. Aeronautical Volmet stations from New York, Trenton, and, last night, from Shannon, Ireland were readable equally on both sets (I am in Laredo,TX). The AGC seems not as ideal on the G6 resulting in a less steady volume then on the E5 on weak stations. The memories are easy to set, and label. They remember whether or not a station is SSB. The memory will not retain the fraction of a KHz that may have been involved in center tuning a SSB station neccesitating a slight retuning upon calling up such a station from memory. Each page of memories can be labeled with 4 letter labels as on the E5. On mw, the set is not as sensitive as a SANGEAN DT200VX or SONY SRF-59; it is, however, very selective (more so than the SANGEAN or SONY) making it useful at night for dx. Unwanted tones appear on a few scattered mw frequencies...on mine, they were most noticeable on 740 KHz...the unwanted tones were resricted to 10 KHz spans...750 and 730, for example were fine. Backlight is nice. Buttons do not light up. One can have light come on with any button press, or use of tuning wheel, or have it remain off except when the light button is purposely pressed. Airband is full of unwanted stations at my crowded am/fm market location (did not attempt to see if they were mw or fm)...it would be a matter of luck as to whether these interfered with your tower frequency...ATIS weather obs and notices to airmen came in great with no inteference.
I like the set.
My PR-D5 arrived today - I put some batteries in it and gave it a whirl at suppertime, then compared it to my Zenith Royal 2000 and Sony 2010.
AM wise - Its hotter than the 2010. But then, the Zenith is hotter than the 2010. The kicker is that the PR-D5 is hotter than the Zenith - especially at the bottom of the dial.
FM is good, but the locals pop up in several places. Every sensitive FM radio I have does this. I blame the CBC tower and those panel antennas that every radio station on PEI, except CJRW aka Spud FM, plugs into. The RDS works great.
Sound is really good on FM - I can't believe the bass out of two 2.5 inch speakers.
AM is pretty muddy - but that can be good for DXing - selectivity and all.
Just tried it a few minutes with nightime conditions. It is amazing.
Right now I'm listening to 940 CINW Montreal on the Kenwood R-2000.
I have it tuned to 944 KHz to enhance the top end. Sounds really good - rather good music they are playing.
