Editors Corner:
ABDX membership has grown with several HF DXers joining. ABDX Nation is now 167 with 4 new members. We anxiously look forward to see loggings from our newest members.
ABDX is STILL looking for those who would like to edit a section of the Journal. If you are interested, email listowner@americanbroadcastdx.com . I can only offer those who contribute by editing, free membership and accolades. Of course membership is free for all but the accolades are what makes the pay worth it all. Join Jay Heyl and me in producing the Journal!
In Sept on the 14th the first HD night time station operations started. History was made and ABDX members documented the change. DXing will not ever be the same on MW as long as we have IBOC/HD. Read all about it in this months Journal. Who knows how long IBOC will be around, some stations have already turned it off at night. It has been intensely discussed on the mail list.
Septembers CME was also about Football DX and DX before and after HD comes on line. Often stations stay on or at higher power to get the high school game broadcast completed and it’s a great way to catch a new station.
Jay Heyl has written a piece about the 1181 carrier we were all chasing last month. You can find his article inside. There is some very good information in there about DFing signals
We enjoy seeing our members who have made it to the “Hall of Fame” for those of us with faces for radio! If you are a member and want to be in the Rogues Gallery, send your pix to webmaster@americanbroadcastdx.com.
Only submissions from ABDX members will be accepted unless the editor decides the information is so important that it should be added. This will probably be very rare, Should you receive this and you are not a member, go to this URL and tell us a little about yourself and we will consider you for membership.
This is the site to join ABDX.

The September CME Announcement
ABDX announces the September CME. The September CME will focus on two fronts. One will be the tradition of September. Football, High School, College and Professional will be starting in full and this is the time to catch the stations running the famed Football STA. [This is not really approved by the FCC but
is generally done] You can catch football DX on any band and even TV and report.
The second front is historic. What we do and say and report here will be recorded somewhere for history. HD Radio is coming to MW 24/7 on Sept. 14. We will be the first to find out if HD hybrid will DX. We would like reports of DX from IBOC stations before and after. Reports from those without HD radios on DX from adjacent channels would be very welcome.
A large number of HF DXers have joined recently. We REALLY, REALLY,
REALLY do LOVE HF logs. Don't be shy, send your logs to the mail list. HF logs from you all will get more people interested in HF radio.
WX, FM and TV may be slow but if you can get any DX on WX, FM or TV we are interested in seeing your logs on the mail list.
NBN - Nothing But Net logs, let us know what you find, we get some very interesting streams from listeners on ABDX.
LF -Send in your beacons. LF loggings will improve as there soon will be much less lightning noise for those on the East Coast. This is the band that you can actually get that 400W station from Tahiti or Iceland from inside the North American Continent. This is what I call the real DX band. LF should be starting to improve very soon. Who will be the first to hear Greenland on LF or MW this year?
The October CME Announcement
ABDX announces the October CME. The October CME will focus on two fronts. One will be the tradition of football, High School, College and Professional will be starting in full and this is the time to catch the stations running the famed Football STA. [This is not really approved by the FCC but is generally done] You can catch football DX on any band and even TV and report.
The second front is playoff baseball. The playoffs are here and radio is a medium made for baseball. We will accept logs from the first playoff game to the last game of the Worlds Series.
And of course, if you can get IBOC to decode, we are always interested in that.
Harry Helms has requested a CME for logs in the 1711-5200 range. This is the area I would like to see you focus on but will take all HF logs. We REALLY, REALLY, REALLY do LOVE HF logs. Don't be shy, send your logs to the mail list. HF logs from you all will get more people interested in HF radio. HF DXers, let us know what you are hearing.
WX, FM and TV may be slow but if you can get any DX on WX, FM or TV send it along! October and November are the last two months of hurricane season, you never know what you might hear on the WX band!
NBN - Nothing But Net logs, let us know what you find, we get some very interesting streams from listeners on ABDX. Its a way to hear things that are far out of range of your radio.
LF -Send in your beacons. This is the band that you can actually get that 400W station from Tahiti or Iceland from inside the North American Continent. This is what I call the real DX band. LF DXers started to send in logs last month and some of the stuff they heard is phenomenal.
Satellite reception is always on the menu, let us know what you are hearing or seeing and what you think about those programs.
What are you hearing?

Some time ago I had thoughts of trying to make the NRC/WTFDA convention in Idaho. Well, Pat said she had another idea, and could I listen? To make a long story shorter it involved my sister coming down to visit, and a "dinner cruise", all to help celebrate a birthday (mine) that was coming up. Well, in Tampa, my idea of a "dinner cruise" is the little boat maybe 75 feet long that goes out down the ship channel, circles in Tampa Bay near Peter O Knight airport, while you all have dinner and comes back maybe 3 hours later.
Pat's idea of a dinner cruise was a 5 day trip on a somewhat larger vessel that would have squashed the starship dinner yacht if a large wave had come up the
ship channel. As it turns out the three of us spent 5 enjoyable days on the big ship, and the yacht trip will have to wait another day. We visited Grand Cayman
and Cozumel. I brought the DX398 and did some radio research, looking at Cuba and of course George Town.
But this is "vacation radio" and far from exhaustive, and probably not much news here.
The vessel is known to true Radio Men in parts of the world everywhere simply as C6FM5, no further detail required. It is only to the illiterate masses of non-
Radio Men that the added description "M/V Inspiration" must be added. On this trip, the name Perspiration might have worked as well. Must say, the wx was outstanding, if quite toasty.
They were having a real sale, the three of us traveled for less than two would normally spend. I don't know if they made a profit but the ship (2480-ish pax) was full.
Our Cuba track southbound passed maybe 15 km west of Cape San Antonio, the tip of Pinar, about 1530 local, second day out. What appeared to be a Cuban navy picket boat, or perhaps a fixed platform, was visible a few km east with binoculars. Treetops and a few coastal buildings were dimly visible, but too far to discern any possible tower structures. The Good News - no one fired on us!
I was somewhat more productive with the radio on the return trip, noon local time on 31 August, at 24 N, 85 W but by then far enough north that Habana proper was being heard. (Unfortunately I lost my notes from the southbound pass,
21d30m N, but I recall 550, 790, 820 being loud while Habana, as measured by 950 level, was weak due to land attenuation).
I noted 550 // 530, the 530 lagged by 1.5 second, equal level. I think there used to be a 650, but here 650 and 660 were vacant. On 710, 2 Sp. signals, equal, with 5 Hz SAH. Noted 730 fairly strong w/Progreso (maybe Isla Juventud?)
Noted Reloj 790 loud, 2 Hz SAH w/pres. Miami. The 820 was very strong and was // 550. Noted 880 at s-7, 890 at s-2 and 900 unheard. 950 by then was s-9. Heard Guama on 990 very loud, // on 1020 a lot weaker. 1030 and 1050 vacant.
On 1080 was a seeming 1 kc het, similar to the 1180 situation? 1140 fairly loud and // a somewhat weaker 1120, and same 1120 level as 1100. The het on 1180 was between ear- splitting and just piercing. Massive. Audios just a jumble
between Reb and Marti, nothing discernable thru the massive het from 1181. My Rx is too broad IF to be useful for DF'ing here. In addition a pronounced 8 Hz SAH was chopping up 1180.
I can report that, just south of Cabo San Antonio, 21 30N on Tue 28 Aug, Marti was very loud and absolutely alone, around 1500 local, so the cordillera in northern Pinar must be blocking everything from more easterly Habana-ish area.
Perhaps the het was absent that day, I just don't know. I wonder if they get any field reports from Cubans in that area?
I heard a local on 1200, couldn't match to any of the other Red's. I haven't attempted to Id the networks except when absolutely known by me, or by sound (reloj, etc). Also, I did not hear anything Cuban above 1200 so the effort I
saw reported elsewhere, to get Cuban Am'ers over 1200 off the air, must be working. I once thought I had a hot one on 1450 with LAtin mx, turned out to be just Sarasota (at minimal s-1 level // to a s-2 1320)
Aside from the (two?) hets, freq stability of the ones I heard from western Cuba seemed as good as we have in the US.
I have to report that I made no real effort to see what I could identify on FM, mainly due to lack of time, when passing near Cuba, also due to not having brought any logs, and hearing out of area signals that would take too long
to ID. The classical cruise dilemma - how to allocate your limited time resources? Especially when at 15:30 it's classical Piano in the lounge with tea and salmon being served. Have all you want, etc.
Also, no night DX, almost no beacon DX, nothing of note. I did not consciously seek out distant US stations, except to note WWL very well heard while headed N.
I did a fairly involved survey of FM in the Grand Cayman area, when outbound, mid-afternoon. I was able to identify TWELVE!!! FM signals coming from Grand Cayman. Not having a WRTH, I don't know how much of this is known to DXers but I'll write up my notes on them and send separately, perhaps tomorrow. I know that Powell heard one of them, so perhaps someone's unID from the Es season
will match my notes? Stay tuned.

I know this is FM, if you feel it is 'Off Topic', just kindly delete your copy. Just trying to reach as many as I can. Maybe one of you had one of these on Es this summer.
I was listening with the DX398 1430-1530 localtime EDT 29 Aug while westbound from George Town, Grand Cayman (on EST time there) after our 1400 departure**. FM signals were held until reaching 19d 26.2m N; 81 deg 55.4m W when the louder ones started dropping out. I was in the cabin on 5th deck (of 12), window facing south. Heading 291 deg, speed 21.4 mi/hr. (note: on the older ships such as the Inspiration, the window glass will pass GPS signals. Newer ships e.g. Triumph, the cabin windows are an absolute block to GPS and you need to be topside. This is probably metallization to block UV light).
**ship always stays on time of the home port, here, EDT, though both visit ports were 1 hour earlier.
I heard the following, all believed from Caymans. Incidentally I heard both "CAY-mun" and "kay-MANN" used in speech.
There is of course no guarantee that these formats apply at any particular time. For instance I heard BBC satellite feed news audio on one of these, in a cab, around noon; I think it was the 104.1 but that's just a guess. And, most everything with music seemed automated, often segued.
88.7 Gospel, weak signal, very little talking
89.9 Local telephone talk, local issues, relig. context
94.9 "Spin ninety-four nine", rap music
96.5 "kay-rock ninety six five"; rock mx
97.7 "heaven ninety seven" gospel, relig. news items
Call 945-2707 to FAX in items, 939-0350 prayer help.
98.9 "The Vibe", "ninety eight nine" Carib, hip-hop, had
at least one ad in Spanish
99.9 rock.
RDS: "TODAYS / Z99FM"
101.9 country, CNN news.
RDS: "ROOSTER / 101 / CAYMAN / COUNTRY "
104.1 rock.
RDS: "HOT 104 / YOUR / MUSIC" (or) "YOUR / STATION"
alternating with song title/artist display
105.3 rock, local radio, spoken: "keep it locked on The
Breeze", "Happy Radio Breeze F-M"
106.1 rock.
RDS: "KISS FM" alternating with title/artist display
107.1 rock.
RDS: "X 107--1" alternating with titles display.
Total of 12 identifiable signals, 5 w/RDS. As for AM (which long ago used to be on 1205 and 1555) - ha, ha. I would have no idea where to look for old AM towers - everything from George Town up the 7-mile beach, up to Hell, turtle farms etc., is pretty well developed, properties are very expensive. SO any old AM sites are likely long razed, or were way out East.
We bought a book on Cayman geology. Much of the area is karstic limestone that shows evidence of multiple long-term inundations long ago, and the area is an elevated risk of earthquakes, due to being on the border between two tectonic
plates, on a fault zone running E-W and on towards Eastern Cuba. (recall the 1694 tsunami at Port Royal, Jamaica)
9/14
At 0630 local time today, e. g. now, none of my four AM HD locals are running HD. These are 620, 820, 970 and 1250.
9/17
This prompted me to check just now (1315 local time) and the 1380 Disney in St Pete is running iBOC, a fact I did not know, so, no idea when it was turned on. I'll have to check after dark to see what their night time situation is. None of the
other Tampa HD's have it on at night, as of last night.
The hash indeed seems to extend farther out as well, but I'd want to have a spectrum analyzer to make an informed judgment on that. Maybe just the lack of semi-loud adjacents up there makes it seem wider...

1490 KOWL South Lake Tahoe CA received a nice email verie letter from v/s Bill Kingman in 9 1/2 months for a report with a CD. Bill is retired and is occasionally hired to fix things at the station and my letter just got into his hands. He mentions that in the 1960's they were usually the only station on 1490 on Monday mornings and they received letters from all over the world.
I'm very happy with this one. I consider it a somewhat rare one down here.
9/8
I woke up at 5:50 AM and made it out of bed.
Audio on 1566, unneeded South Korea.
594 JOAK Tokyo 1303 tentative with Japanese talk by a man, faded to noise by 1308. I'll need to look for this again.
I also heard weak audio on 774 after this.
9/18
Here is a quick survey. I did a daytime scan on 9/12 at lunch in my Toyota truck. I did an after sunset scan (7:10 PM PDT) tonight on my HQ-180A.
570 KLAC on daytime, kills both side channels but no daytimers there anyway. off this evening
600 KOGO on daytime, weak signal on 610, probably KAVL. They used to be a daytime regular on this evening, 590 is unusable but 610 is OK
710 KSPN on daytime, both side channels gone but no daytimers there anyway. on this evening, KDWN-720 and KALL-700 in the hiss null but not as strong
740 KBRT on daytime (daytime only station), wipes out 730 and 750
790 KABC on daytime, XESPN-800 in hiss and maybe better signal than with analog sideband splash. 780 unusable. on this evening
980 KFWB on daytime, wipes out 970 (used to hear Palm Springs) and 990 (used to hear Mexicali) off this evening
1070 KNX on daytime, wipes out 1080 and 1100 on this evening, 1060 and 1080 had stations in hiss null
1110 KDIS on daytime, wipes out 1100 and 1120 off this evening
I've lost some DX frequencies, especially at sunset and sunrise. I've also lost some stations.
9/22
I just tuned in at 10:45 PM PDT and KUZZ is dominant with Country music. There is a station with talk that is barely audible behind them and occasionally fades up. Probably KFYI but not enough for an ID. I'll keep trying. Back in the 1980's KOY was a regular here.
9/29
I just ran across the band and only 4 stations running IBOC that are causing adjacent channel interference. 9/29/07, 9:30-9:50 PM PDT.
600 KOGO
790 KABC
810 KGO
1070 KNX
Not on were: 570 KLAC, 710 KSPN, 980 KFWB, 1110 KDIS.
I've lost a some good DX channels and I've missed out on QSLs from a few stations. Hopefully there will be nights when the stations turn their IBOC off and I'll get another shot at them.
9/7
While scanning the AM dial for Football DX, I came across something
under always-there-by-night-WBBM; as the signal continued to fade in
and out, I noted it was a Sports station. When they went to a break, I
noted it was Fox Sports.
Who on AM 780 carries Fox Sports? Freshwater updated his lists as of 1
September, but it doesn't have any Fox Sports stations listed. The Fox
Sports Website is less than useless. And WBBM is causing a lot of
headaches trying to pull whatever that is as well.
Signal seems to be coming from the south or south-southwest.
Hot off the logbook, these were heard 7 September 2007 on the GE
Superadio III. All noted after 20:30 EDT.
I was a little hesitant about scanning this evening due to a good
thunderstorm passing through about 19:45 EDT. In fact, some lightning
was still visible when I fired up at 20:30! Turned out to be a
somewhat decent session, as you'll soon find out:
WGGH-AM 1150 Marion, IL was the first one in here; they were
under very common CKOC, but I was able to make out enough of the game
to make the ID. Game seemed to be Marion vs. Harrisburg. Mostly poor
under CKOC.
Next I was chasing a game on 1260, which faded to reveal WNDE-1260
Indianapolis, IN. As they went to NASCAR info, I moved on. More on
this channel in a bit.
Decided to take a spin toward the upper end of the dial, where the
only thing of interest was KRHW-AM 1520 Sikeston, MO. Game was
Sikeston vs. Charleston, one of the teams was the Bulldogs. Very
STRONG signal.
Next I came across my mysterious Fox Sports station on AM-780, under
pest WBBM. See my earlier post this evening for more on that.
Finally, after a run down the lower frequencies (And getting a hissy
buzz down there whicch I still haven't pinpointed the cause of just
yet,) I decided to make my way back up the dial. Came to 1260, turned
out there was a game there, so I stopped.
WDKN-AM 1260 Dickson, TN was fading in and out with Dickson
County Cougars vs. Brentwood. Signal varies from none at all to a
FAIR and somewhat easily copiable signal. Seemed kinda loud for eighteen watts.
Within an hour, the audible lightning crashes had even disappeared,
so it ended up being a decent night for Football DX.
9/9
Thanks to Mike and Kevin for their input; at 0200 EDT (0600Z) I managed
to capture an ID out of my mystery Fox Sports station on 780, and it
turned out to be WPTN Cookeville, TN. Which my resources show is a one
kilowatt daytimer.
NEW catch, and daytimer that was on WAY past LSS. EXTREMELY difficult
catch under WBBM.
9/14
Propagation wasn't all that remarkable last night either, Glenn. I
say wait until a night of GOOD propagation before we make our
decisions.
Here WOR was way down in the mess (Usually they're the dominant force
in here,) and WBT was rather difficult as well to pull. WTAM always
was a difficult catch inside, last night being no exception.
I DID note a rather weird noise on 1100 toward the south, though --
it sounded like a warbly sound, kind of similar to shaking a large
sheet of plastic (As in a lighting fixture cover.) I also noted a
station under WOR on 710 -- possibly KEEL -- as well as a weak signal
under WKRC-550...suspect KTRS. Also a Classic Country/Nostalgia
station under WBT on 1110, which I couldn't ID.
The only IBOC I noted last night was from KMOX, which made hearing
local WDFN-1130 difficult. No great loss there, as WDFN carries
Sports, but WDFN carries IBOC by day (50 kw.) No idea if they're
going to run it by night -- they run ten kilowatts by night, with
nine towers and 28 augmentations. (By day it's 50 kw with two towers
and four augmentations.)
So as far as I'm concerned, the jury's out for the reason specified.

Both heard between 9:20 and 9:45 on the HD 101 while checking for night IBOC.
910 first was playing debbie boon you light up my life then came a fade down followed by caught part of an ID on a rapid fade up ending in KL then fade down into the noise. Research shows a station WRKL putting out 800 watts at night (away from me) but format is reported ethic .
1040 a man speaking broken english with a heavy spanish / mexican accent. This came pounding in out of nowhere before dropping back into the noise. No sign of WHO at the time.

Right now as i am typing this WBZ is playing in background with a strong ANALOG signal. it is 8:46 AM and the blue light is flashing like a strobe light. The transmitter can't be more then 40 miles as the crow flies and WBZ has always covered R.I. well. I am only using the cheezy supplied loop but i don't want to stick something on there thats not going to work or worse bow something. This radio has a very hot ANALOG side on MW with just the supplied loop but getting locks on HD signals is another matter. I can lock two locals 630 and 920. 1290 locks but requires a little fiddleing with the loop. WBZ forget it !!!
9/11
Last night i was monitoring locals for IBOC at night. Around sunset static came up . was on 1290 at the time. further investigation showed static covering the entire band. This is knocking OUT locals !!!!
This went on all night . it is still going on but not as bad i can hear the locals with static. Just a few minutes ago 630 kicked the HD on and it locked but it keeps loosing the lock. 630 is very local. Whatever is/was causing this QRM (it just let up and now 630 HD lock IS holding at 6:37 AM EDT).
This is strange this QRM started around sunset and disappears about sunrise or a few minutes after the locals go to day rigs. This QRM made coming nighttime IBOC sound pleasant !!! at 6:41 AM it has completly vanished.
910 WABI Bangor Maine 10:30 PM EDT with Bangor news and an ad including report anyone doing suspitous activies near public water. Dept of maine public water . later gave Bangor weather followed by some music by Patsy Cline in there later Debbie boone you light up my life about 10:45 PM EDT. 9/11/2007
Note : was hammering in at times . Local 920 WHJJ 1st adjacent is an IBOC station daytime.
9/14
About 12:30 AM EDT i awoke to a mother nature call. checked the dials and noted flashing blue light on 710, 1100 and 1210 as well. ALSO on HD 100 (revised 101 version).
local 920 has not yet started nightime IBOC will report on locals after sunset tonight. 910 bangor Maine booming in at time of above check playing music (something like a MOYL format).
at 12:30 AM EDT 9/14 WBAL was booming in with no sign of hash heard on the radiosophy HD 100. Note WBAL was city grade at time.
9/15
Wobbler was booming in on 1100 right over WTAM around 8:30PM edt 9/14.
several bluelighters no luck on a HD lock.
660 WFAN- after ball game had very good analog signal that was stable. blue light flashing no lock no PAD.
700- WLW - blue light flasing no PAD no lock. can hear the analog but must be strong or gets buried under 710 hash.
710- WOR - flashing blue light no PAD no lock. Strong analog with a little cuba underneith.
770- WABC- fair to good analog signal flashing blue no lock no PAD.
880- WCBS - fair analog no PAD no lock.
1030- WBZ no blue light could not detect a HD signal .
1210- philly - nice analog signal strong stable. Giving LOCAL 1220 some nice hash.
There were a few other blue lighters 810 but no luck on any locks or PAD.
Also one more note yesterday 9/14/07 during the DAY WBZ had a brief catch on HD at least enough to pull partial PA D data . it said A & J. Caught a second bit of PAD data said T and something else. Thats the closest so far coming close to a WBZ lock.
One more note: isn't it a little strange BOTH WFAN and WCBS turned OFF HD during the ball games ????
9/15
On HD 100 WOR at one point did obtain PAD data and showed WOR in display.
almost had a lock.
660 WFAN strong analog no lock.
770 WABC strong analog no lock
1210 WPHT stong analog no lock.
all the above had stable skywave signals that were strong an were canadates for a lock. other HD stations flashed the light but had fair analog signals..
------------------------------------------
Next it was time to pull out the Kaito 1103 and see how things sound (problem areas) on the ANALOG side of this:
650 WSM getting trashed with hash from 660. Hearing WSM was not pleasant to LISTEN but was DXable. It was helpful to off tune to 651 to lower the hash. FAN hash peaked around 648 or so.
760 WJR getting hashed with 770. this was a little easier to null down the hash as WJR and WABC coming from different directions. at best got WJR up strong over hash with light hash underneith.
700 WLW had a little hash that could be nulled from WOR however 720 was being trashed badly. in spite of this i was still able to pull WGN up thru the wreckage using offset tuning and nulling.
above covers the problem areas so far. in the 880 area no problem there 870 WWL new orleans came up for a fine visit.
The results above may vary on a night by night basis depending on progation an location and equipment used.
I have a few loggings on 1250 i will address in a seperate post.

I am still trying to come up with a format for presentation that will be compatible with the various list and individual email systems and look decent. I know that Word works, but I keep my logs in Excel (I also don't like Word) in this format and I don't want to have to jump through any more hoops than I have to when making submissions. My tests show that this displays exactly on various individual emails, so hopefully will look good on the lists as well.
9/14
This morning about 9 am I took a run through the band to see what the QRM from IBOC was like, on the simplistic assumption that if I am getting significant QRM in the daytime, I would not be expecting to get weak DX at night if the IBOC were still on. After all, at the end of the day, no matter what is said about contours and other factors, what we are trying to do is hear DX.
Here is the result of my first unscientific survey. I will do this exercise again at night, but I wanted to get a quick and dirty idea of what the downside is going to be. I may have mistook some other noise for IBOC hash, but it looks to me that the addition of this hash to all the other issues we have to deal with will have a deleterious effect on the MW DXing hobby.
I went through the band using the antenna and mode I normally use for DXing and I didn't try any phasing. One bright spot was that WBUR 1240 seems to have stopped IBOC, at least for the moment.

945 FRANCE France Info 2334 - weak
1206 FRANCE France Info 2343 - fair after phasing nasty IBOC hash from WPHT
All this IBOC has me so paranoid that I don't know if lack of good DX is due to IBOC or just conditions. Since LW was not good at all at local sunset tonight, which it usually is, I can assume probably conditions.
While I agree that it's not the end of the world and with a lot of knob twisting, familiar stations can still be heard if they are at decent levels, the overall QRM has increased considerably. Trying to ID a new latin or domestic under marginal conditions is difficult enough as it is and IBOC hash, however much knocked down, may become the deciding factor in an ID.
I guess saying "it could be worse" may us feel better, but that doesn't change the fact that this is still a scourge to our hobby. Let's hope it dies a quick and horrible death.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The mystery 1181 station is about as strong into Austin tonight as it has been every time I have thought to check recently.
An observation from here that may support the frequency agility theory of this station is that it appears to be generated by a not so good synthesizer which is producing a lot of phase noise or similar modulation + and – 10 Hz from the center 1181 signal.
I would welcome a second opinion on this by anyone with Spectran or similar. Here, using a resolution bandwidth of 0.34 Hz or 0.67 Hz there is something unusual showing up in the 10 Hz either side of center. It looks like a bunch of short curved lines on either side.

LW is not in and the whole band seems noisy and propagation is poor at this
QTH. I took a run through with just a vertical to get maximum IBOC, if on.
The only stations that were trashing their adjacents were 1540-WDCD, Albany
/ 1210-WPHT, Philadelphia / 1080-WTIC-CT / 770-WABC-NY / 710-WOR-NY.
WBZ didn't seem to be on and the rest either were off or the hash was weak
enough to blend with the noise.
9/19
A quick and dirty synopsis of TA activity from the Cape. I didn't even attempt to DX any even channels. WBZ was obliterating everything from 1015 to 1045 and isn't the best phasing candidate for me. I can usually get around the others, but I just didn't feel up for the fight tonight. Ironically, the TA channels immediately on either side of the IBOC blaster are usually better than you would think, although still require some phasing. It's the domestic channels at the next level out that really spew the hash. For them use the "non-intuitive sideband", the one closest to the IBOC frequency for best results.

I know I am beating a deceased bovine here, but the fact that yes, there are still TAs out there doesn't mean everything is hunky dory. What frustrates me is that I don't know how many TAs (and certainly latins) were missed because of the increased level of QRM. Just because you have knocked down the worst of an adjacent hash and you are getting something underneath doesn't mean it's time for celebration.

Well, I guess I'm feeling guilty at hardly ever doing any listening and even
less posting of what I'm hearing, so here's a quick rundown of the situation
at night from here, next-door to the dragon's den.
At the bottom of the dial, there's no IBOC noise until 680. From there up
to 760, it's wall-to-wall noise from 710-KSPN. I got a brief respite on
770, and then strong hash on 780 and 800 (from 790-KABC). 980-KFWB had
their IBOC off, but sister station 1070-KNX had theirs on. 1110-KDIS Radio
Dizzy was entertaining all of the kiddies listening to Hamster Dance in
glorious digital stereo. The rest of us heard the usual hash on 1100 and
1120.
That's all the nighttime IBOC that I could find here. One thing that's been
a big problem is that if the radio is looped towards the KSPN towers, I will
hear IBOC hash or KSPN programming on many other channels up & down the
dial. This makes it really tough sometimes to know if I'm hearing IBOC hash
from some other station, or if it's just coming from KSPN. So there may be
other more distant stations running IBOC, but I can't tell for sure.
One curious thing is that 1020-KTNQ has not had IBOC on in quite a while.
It's sort of ironic when you consider David Gleason's involvement, and his
strong support of IBOC. I'd love to know what's up there.

Greetings, Thanks for the invite for new member introductions. I have been a DXer off and one for at about 30-years. I enjoy MW and tropical band DXing the most. Lately I've been concentrating on trans-Pacific DX from my location near Portland, Oregon. I have a Sony 2010, Drake R8, Quantum Phaser, Palomar loop, Sony AN-1 active whip and various random wire antennas. I hope to erect a Ewe in the near future to complement my set-up.
Regarding recent DX, a couple of days ago I caught Radio Rebelde blasting into Oregon on 710 kHz. At times the signal was above KIRO in Seattle. I couldn't believe. Interesting conditions that night. Another memorable catch was Radio Rossii on 279 kHz on 9/4.
I'm enjoying the discussion on the list so far and look forward to participating in the future.

I notice a minute amount of IBOC hash on my local WBAL 1090 from WTAM
with 1090 in AM mode, no hash in USB mode, and a small but noticeable
amount in LSB mode. Of course when I null WBAL, the hash is clearly
there. Conclusion, it is still too early, but it looks like IBOC hash
will be a problem in marginal conditions as expected. What do others
hear on 1090 from WTAM? I am not recording this because am sleepy and
just got out of bed for a few minutes. BTW, WGN is trashed here. And my
stronger locals, 600, 630, 980, and 1500 are not running IBOC.
9/14
WBZ is taking a hit from WHO. WBZ's usual pristine signal at night is
being marred by hiss from presumed WHO. Is this the end of the era for distant listeners of WBZ?
9/17
For the record, all of the Baltimore-Washington area IBOC stations have
shut off the hiss machine at sunset tonight (17 September).
9/18
I did a little dashboard scanning this morning 9/18.
Before sunrise WOR was covered with hiss from WGN. The audio was unlistenable. Right after Sunrise, WDMV 700 suffered from WOR's hiss machine and it was annoying listening to them. I am in their secondary coverage area and I bet they have lost some listeners as a result of WOR's IBOC. Their signal is normally listenable. WWII was completely covered with WOR's hiss.
Last night, 710 was completely covered with hiss from WGN. Before WGN fired up their IBOC it was possible to hear either Cuba or WOR with a decent listenable signal. Now that is impossible. Things will really get bad once WLW fires up their IBOC.
Once WGN faded out this morning, WOR put in a decent enough signal here
to be listenable.
As noted before, WBZ, which was normally listenable in the mornings
before sunrise on the way to work, was wiped out by WHO's IBOC.
9/19
This is the last straw. WBAL is getting clobbered by IBOC hiss from WTAM
1100 no matter which way I position my antennas or adjust my phaser.
They are getting clobbered on my portables as well. I am well within
WBAL's NIF contour, so this is not even close to a fringe reception. The
reception of WBAL with the IBOC hiss is at 9/19 at 2300. It should be
noted that turning the radio to get rid of interference is not a possibility because WTAM loops in roughly the same direction as WBAL from here.
9/22
Last night, I noticed that at times, WTAM was bothering WBAL again. So I
decided to look at my Drake R8's s-meter. I realize that this is not
very exact, but it gives a rough idea of what is going on. WTIC was not
a factor in this test because their signal was much weaker.
As a base line, I tuned WBAL to the strongest signal strength with was
about s9+35/s9+40 and it was still getting hissed about 1/4 of the time.
I quickly went back and forth between 1090 and 1100 to see what WTAM's
signal strength was relative to WBAL when I heard hiss on 1090. WTAM's
signal varied from about s9 to s9+25/s9+30. As one would expect (perhaps
even axiomatically), when WTAM's signal was above S9+20, the hiss was
easily noticeable on WBAL. When it was less than s9+15, the hiss was not
as noticeable.
For reference, WTIC never made it above s9+10 and as I noted above, did
not appear to be a factor.
Remember I am within WBAL's NIF contour, and should not be hearing IBOC
hiss from WTAM at all.
9/23
WBAL is off the air at this moment. 0012 9/23 Eastern. The channel is
awash with IBOC hash and a presumed CKKW underneath. I wonder why they
are off?

I have been silent for quite awhile here - very busy, getting married in a
month to a lovely woman, trying to change career paths to get out of the
insurance biz, caring for 18 penguins each week, and catching a bunch of
loons and grebes for banding and biosampling. Gonna put a 35' top-loaded
vertical up in our lot and get back on LW again - beacon SMV 188kHz coming
soon to a LF radio near you (if you're in the West, that is).
Time for me to put in my 2 cents about this iBOC thing- I take a slightly
different slant.
I now have an iBOC radio in my car. I have received digitally-decoded DX as
far as KSL and KNBR, but no real DX in iBOC mode beyond that. If there's
ANY CARRIER AT ALL present above or below the iBOC station being DXed,
you're left with only a flashing HD indicator and four **** for the call
letters - the station above or below the iBOC station essentially
contaminates one or the other digital sidebands enough to render it
non-decodable. The flashing HD indicator is essentially the radio going
into C-QuAM mode when a digital signature is detected between the sidebands
to begin frame-grabbing the data. Some radios also kick into analog stereo
(like the Accurian); others, like my JVC, receive only monaural analog, or
stereo digital.
AM iBOC sounds awesome... but on only a *select few* of those digital
stations. iBOC AM radio TRULY COULD be great... but it is what the
engineers are doing (or rather, ARE NOT doing correctly) that has already
ruined the fun and enjoyment of tuning into AM iBOC.
Where we had been with C-QuAM stereo ten years ago when certain big
broadcast corporations began pressuring CE's to start screwing with the
otherwise good audio quality of most AM stations, is exactly where we are
now with digital iBOC AM stereo. Put simply, for a vast number of AM
stations, the iBOC digital stream is there, but the lack of STEREO AUDIO
being sent over that digital carrier is pitiful. iBOC on AM is not only a
waste of bandwidth, but (except for KDIS, KNX and KSPN in LA, and for KNEW
in SFO), it is a technology being grossly WASTED IN PRACTICE - all while
being overrated as the next greatest thing since sliced bread.
You've got these broadcasters absolutely hamming it up about iBOC and how
great it is... but can they take 2 lousy minutes of their time to plug both
L and R audio cables in the back of the generator and pay a little attention
to the audio chain that feeds it? While all the "HD Radio - Discover It"
spots are being rammed down the ears of their audience? Take KABC 790 for
example - they sounded BEAUTIFUL in C-QuAM stereo, but the minute they went
digital, all went mono, even in digital mode - and it is NOT a STL issue -
their studio is across the parking lot from the transmitter on La Cienega,
and it certainly can't be rewiring their console for mono... who wires a
console anymore? Most are computerized units paired to hard-drives and the
mike bank, and are stereo-ready out-of-the-box.
I flatly disagree with people who say, "it's a talk station, so who cares
about stereo". On any talk station, what do you always end up listening to
for 23 minutes of each and every hour (or more during drive-time)? Bumper
music, ad-spots with music and sound effects, movie-previews, station
sounders, etc, all of which are RECORDED as stereo files on the station's
hard-drive, and sure the hell ought to be PLAYED BACK that way for the
audience - no excuse! NPR does... So why not most other commercial talk
stations having the megabucks for the latest and greatest in audio
processing gear?
It is FLAT-OUT LAME for a CE TO USE THE STATION'S FORMAT as a deciding basis
for how his/her station's audio chain will be engineered - what the hell
kind of backward engineering is THAT? "Oh, we're a talk station, so stereo
really doesn't matter because I don't really care to do that for our
listeners that we are pushing those STEREO HD Radio commercials to? A
station's engineering team ought to wire that station to MAXIMIZE the
CAPABILITY to sound as good as possible, while staying within the station's
FCC broadcast parameters.
So to me, 90% of AM iBOC is a waste of bandwidth, primarily because of the
type of audio plugged into the iBOC generator. I want a listening
EXPERIENCE, not just another AM station hiding behind the mask of HD with
minimalistic ideas of audio presentation. Otherwise, I AIN'T GONNA LISTEN
BETWEEN THE DAMN STATIONS to your gritty-sounding digital mono audio. I'll
stick to my iPOD or XM where I CAN get stereo even on talk stations... and
without the out-of-sync analog-digital flipping every time I go under a
bridge, get too far away, get too near powerlines or buildings, receive
skywave cancellation, fart, drive in a thunderstorm, etc. If stations only
want to air mono content, and don't want to TRULY closely reproduce the
source material, what's the point of investing hundreds of thousands of
dollars for the hardware upgrade and paying yearly for the Ibiquity license?
I can get better audio on a PC and a slow-speed internet connection (stereo
audio without the dropouts).
The crystal-clear, stereo iBOC audio of KNX, KDIS, and KSPN will BEAT THE
PANTS off of KABC's grainy-sounding, mono iBOC audio. My DXing days on MW
are dwindling, and I am going back to LW... before the beacons disappear
during the next few years. AM broadcasting offers very little for my needs
anymore - all the frills and chills are gone. And where the digital is
offered, very few bother to think out-of-the-box anymore - it is the same
damn mono arrangement as before, and the same crappy programming.
Finally, what's with all of the "on-again, off-again" games iBOC AM stations
are pulling with their digital modes? Some day-to-day, or even
hour-to-hour, like KGO and KMJ? Many stations HAD been HD a couple of years
ago, but are no longer, like KCBS, KMXE, and KTNQ. Others are just adding
it. Summary: iBOC-AM is VAPORWARE, just like analog AM stereo used to be.
Here one moment, gone the next. No consistency or reliability on many
stations.
That's my summary of iBOC AM. If engineering at these stations don't make
the tradeoff of the loss of DXing worth my while by providing decent audio
and programming, forget listening to them.

Took a listen on 1240 at 1800. Heard someone cross the hour with what could have been WKDK's format...no news or ID.
Was looking for WCNC, Elizabeth City (NC) which was in there but no ID. Someone else with AP news, maybe WJNC Jacksonville (NC).
1240 quickly goes from WJNC daytimes with only a very weak
WCNC and WPJL beneath into the usual riot inside of 45 minutes.

Very surprised and very pleased top log WCNC practically alone, after WLSC, Loris, SC took a sudden dive. Usually-present WJNC, Jacksonville (NC) swamped by WCNC and WLSC.

900 CHML ON Hamilton: logged @2050 on 9/10 during break in coverage between Tigers and Bluejays (I believe). String of adverts leading up to positive reference to "CHML, Hamilton." Knew I'd log them sooner of later. Also logged from Indianapolis.
1180 ------ FL Marathon: Another tentative on Radio Martí with post-ID flute theme. Listened several times but could not fish "Radio Martí" through Rebelde and WHAM; however, heard entirety of post-ID, pre-news theme. Drats. From strength of Martí against co-channel RM, I'd say they must have both 50-kW Continental 317-F's up and allowing at least 25 kW to radiate off back of array. The question is, "why?"

1080 WKBY VA Chatham: Logged @1700 on 9/19. WNCT-1070 IBOC not operative for some reason, leaving adjacent channels free. WWKD Murfreesboro, NC on dead carrier leaving WKBY beneath. WKBY faded up in time for ID: "Praise the Lord. This is W K B Y in Chatham, Virginia." Never heard before. Rather surprised but pleased nonetheless.

1180 ----- FL Marathon: Finally an ID @ 2000 9/19. WHAM in a fade and Martí atop both Rebelde outlets here. Usual flute-like theme music, then Martí "Political" jingle sung by female voices (which has name José Martí 's name embedded in it, much to the anger of the Cuban gov't. Numerous mentions of "Martí" throughout. Never logged before in period 1986 - 2001. DA pattern apparently has been adjusted to allow Cuban-American community in Miami/Dade County to hear the station.

The mystery 1181.0 carrier is now into its fourth week. Perhaps everything
about it that can be said has been said, except that I for one am still hearing
it on almost nightly quick chex, such as 0052 UT Sept 8, and it is still
looping about 125/(305) degrees from here. Can anyone come up with some new
ideas about what or who may be behind it? Still a good idea to keep checking it
regularly, in case some different bearing show up or something else happen to
it, or for that matter, it just disappear.
** OKLAHOMA. Spotted another Talking House sign as we drove around Enid on West Chestnut at the intersexion of Briar Ridge, but WTFK? Had to go a few blox
north to get to the house and another sign with the frequency on it, 1670. But
yet another sign beside it said the house was SOLD. But the 1670 transmitter
was still running as if it were available. Greg Winkeljohn (sp?) was speaking,
for Remax Premier Realators (as he pronounces it, and he am one!); phone (580) 231-0992 given several times during spiel. Refer to Offer #456, or see
http://www.enidhomes.com Address of this one is 4322 Briar Ridge; it`s 3 BR,
and has other wonderful attributes.
Also used part of his spiel to promote the Talking House angle and offer it to
other sellers; ask him for a free video about it. This one on 1670 has better
range than some of the others monitored recently. Could still be heard back at
the Chestnut intersexion, and even audible on crummy caradio as far east as
Chestnut @ Oakwood. This was in mid-afternoon Sept 7, so no skywave to QRM, but surely could be heard in Bellabarba`s Italy. Is that enough info for a QSL?

UT Sept 14 from 0450 to 0525 I scanned the MW band several times on the DX-398 in the yard. This was after the EDT midnight start, and from 0500 UT after the midnight CDT start.
Time IBOC hiss frequency presumed source frequency or station
0450 1090 WTAM-1100

0511 1500 in KSTP null WLAC-1510
0515 750 in WSB null WJR-760?
I must say none of this would have been very noticeable if I had not been
looking for it. In most cases I had to null the dominant station in order to
hear the hiss, and it was no problem to hear the dominant stations unless they
were nulled. In most cases I could not get a hiss-match above and below a
certain frequency because the analog signal on one side or the other was too
strong. There could also be some `false-positives` here, noise mistaken for
IBOCh.
I looked for IBOCh accompanying KTOK-1000 OKC, but could not detect it on
990-CBW, or ?-1010 even when aimed at OKC; may not have been on. Did not detect it on 1190 or 1210 aside WOAI. Of course, some stations that are going to do it may not have promptly turned it on at local midnight. Things may be worse the following evening and onward.
Around sunset have previously heard KMOX-1120 and KFAB-1110 doing a number on each other but this time could not detect any IBOCh from KMOX.
Also looked for it especially on 690 and 710 from WLW but could not detect it.
WOR-710 is DX out here, so not surprising could not hear it on 700 or 720 from
them.
Did not hear any IBOCh in the 1230-1490 regional/local channels, loaded as they
are with piles and piles of analog signals.
This was still before midnight in MDT and PDT, so if KOA or other big signals
from the west are doing it, too early to tell.
Fortunately I don`t have any 50 kW locals, and my three 1 kW locals on 960,
1390 and 1640 aren`t into IBOCh, AFAIK. At this rate, I would say IBOCh won`t
disrupt normal listening much, but can certainly be a problem versus weak
signal

** OKLAHOMA. While bandscanning for IBOCh, Sept 16 at 0558, I noticed on 1020 kHz ``CBS Radio Networks, channel 45`` loop announcement with tones. Went right thru 0600 with no local ID break, and still going at 0611. From strength and direxion, this was obviously my semi-local KOKP Perry OK, an all-too-common example of AM stations running with no human oversight whatsoever. Automation mistuned to wrong satellite channel. Chances are good, especially late at night, that if you tune thru the entire MW band, you will hear the same loop
running somewhere
** U S A. The MW lists have been full of IBOCh reports, channels now suffering
this self-destructive interference. I have not been tracking it in detail, but
here`s what I found in a MW bandscan Sept 16 around 0600: 1210 & 1190
especially bad (from WOAI); 1130 thru 1100 from KMOX and KFAB; 1050 & 1030 from WHO; 900 & 880 from WLS; 770 & 750 from WJR; 730 & 710 & 690, from WGN & WLW

UNIDENTIFIED. 1670 kHz, Sept 21 at 1325, distorted talk and wavering het
against residual skywave signal from broadcast station. Suspect it`s the
talking house in Enid I recently reported mobile from local range, within a
dekameter of it.
BTW, I am still hearing the low het on 1600.0, at the same time, indicating an
off-frequency broadcast station, yet to be singled out. I would guess it is
around 100 Hz plus or minus, so none of the entries on
http://www.myradiobase.de/mediumwave/mwoffset.txt appear to fit, tho KCKK
Colorado doesn`t have a precise entry yet; propagationally (still audible here
at that hour, and reliably audible at night), it would be a good prospect

Lots of posts out there about IBOC.. I assume that tonight will be
the night that we will see most of what IBOC is going to do. Lots of
engineers did not want to come in just to turn on the IBOC generators
at midnight when they should be sleeping. Tonight might tell a bigger
story.
Here is what I heard last night...
I heard a considerable amount of hiss in several places over the
band. It wasn't enough to knock out stations but weak ones are going
to be much more difficult to get. Nothing decoded but tried to
several times.
640-KFI too big to hear hiss
650-weak to slight hiss o/u KMTI/XETNT
660- Slight hiss during KTNN short fades
670-Slight to moderate hiss under KLTT
690 - Slight hiss fading in and out under XETRA who gave a real nice
ID while I was listening
700- KALL has a massive signal. If there was hiss, you could never
hear it
710 - Slight hiss fading in and out under KNUS when they would weaken
720 - Hiss a little more stronger under KDWN and more stable but
would fade on occasion
750-Hiss under KAMA
770-Too much KKOB for hiss.
970-Moderately strong hash not previously noted.
1030- Audible hiss o/u KTWO
1050- Hiss under XEG
1110 -Considerable hiss u\o KFAB
1130-Considerable hiss over KWKH
1200-Weak hiss under WOAI
1220-Slight to moderate hiss XEB Mexico City not heard
1500-Strong hiss in and out over KSTP
1520-Hiss at times on KOMA and KOMA is strong here
Other notes:
Het is still running on 1181
530 RVC heard instead of Cuba.

Add KGO to the HD list 9/14. Messing up 800 and 820 pretty good.
Hash noted on 900 - 920, Have no idea who this is.
This is going to make me the king of NBN logs, satellite listening
and a HF DXer. The band is blasted with hash here.
9/15
Here's your chance to see if you can get KFYI 550 in HD. They are on
tonight.
I am using the Worcester Space Magnet 2 and its solid lock on KFYI.
The supplied loop with the radio is not hardly getting the HD. The RS
Loop is about 90% tonight and the SM2 is real good with it.
HSFB and Football DX log:
880 KRVN Lexington, NE 9/15 1915 with Nebraska and USC football.
1130 KWKH Shreveport, LA 9/15 1949 with LSU football being pounded by
hash.
9/16
I guess I am lucky not to be hearing much hash so say some naysayers.
I am reporting the partial decodes I have tonight. I am using the Sangean HDR-1 and Space Magnet 2 Loop on this night of 9/16.
I do not know who all of the stations are. I can not tell as I did not get PSD on the UNIDs. All I can do is assume. I have no idea if this is false or true, all I am doing is reporting what I heard and saw on the meter on the screen. Some of these were on a few seconds and some several minutes.
This is all new to me so I have NO answers to any possible questions the readers may have. I hope this at least makes those who think that there is no hash understand that there is something to what we all say.

My local HDs were off tonight they are on 550, 620, 860, 1580.
When I am DXing consider that I hear hash on both sides of all these
stations. MW DX will be very difficult and it seems at this point
skywave will be quite unsuccessful for the common DXer.
9/19
Three IBOC stations are on the air from Phoenix tonight.
620 KTAR
860 KMVP
1580 KMIK
Conspicuously absent is KFYI.
Noted a big powerhouse of a station missing and unlistenable in Arizona. KMVP 860 completely covers up KOA with its IBOC hiss No more Colorado Rockies or Denver Broncos here from KOA.
KOA is listenable at times on the east coast but not in AZ. IBOC made
KOA, DOA.
9/29
Local interference of KDUS 1060 who has antennas 11 miles away in
Guadalupe, AZ. They have loud hiss underneath from KNX. I will report
this to KDUS and let them deal with this.

I decided to check 1181 this morning even though there was a good bit of daylight here at my first check at 6:31 am Central (1131 UTC). The tone/het was clearly in there against 1180, but began fading almost immediately after I tuned in. It gradually faded and was gone by 6:38 am/1138 UTC.
9/15
Heard last night while bandscanning for HD, equipment was ICF-2010 with Kiwa filters and Quantum Loop unless otherwise noted:
570 CUBA Radio Reloj with time ticks and "RR" in Morse code through mess on channel 8:52 pm.
610 UNID 1 kHz het on low side, much like our 1181 friend. Ran out to home office/ham shack to fire up R8B and 40 meter dipole to confirm this wasn't a spur
or in-house QRN; this definitely was a legit skywave signal with some fading. Fair to good signal 8:56 pm.
790 CUBA Radio Reloj time ticks and "RR" 9:08 pm.
1020 CUBA Radio Reloj, imperialist Yanqui IBOC digihash unable to stop Fidel's time ticks and "RR" 9:20 pm.
1181 UNID The Het blasting through 9:30 pm at a very strong level; no doubt a power increase to blast through the IBOC digihash.
Propagation here last night definitely favored signals to the south and east.
9/15
I did a bandscan last night using my ICF-2010 with Kiwa filters and Quantum loop to see what impact the first HD stations would have on the band. Most of my
listening was in the 8:30-10:00 pm Central period. The results:
700 Distinct IBOC digihash above and below the channel, so I suspect WLW as the main culprit----if I could hear their IBOC sidebands in CA, I guess I can
hear them in TX!
840 Definite high side IBOC digihash, suspect WHAS even though they were not audible on 840.
850 Definite high side IBOC digihash.
1020 to 1040 A digital no-man's-land from just below 1020 to above 1040; no more TA or TP DX in that range!
1110 to 1120 Another digital wasteland with plenty of inter-channel digihash.
I went looking for high-end digihash (such as from KFBK-1530) but conditions definitely favored the south and east last night; the band was a Fiesta Mexicana
here.
My conclusions? I have none at this point. Until all the stations that plan to run HD actually switch it on, we can't tell whether this is just another annoyance or a fatal blow to AM band DXing.

560 KLVI, Beaumont, TX, Raiders vs. Buccaneers, 28-0 at halftime 9:08 pm
580 WIBW, Topeka, KS, Hayden vs. Manhattan, ID 9:10 pm
680 KKYX, San Antonio, TX, Lee vs. Madison 9:21 pm
710 KGNC, Amarillo, TX, Amarillo vs. Odessa, Odessa leading 56-7 and it was Amarillo's homecoming 9:31 pm
860 KKOW, Pittsburg, KS, post-game show, Pittsburg won 43-14, "Purple Dragon FB on 8-60 AM" 9:38 pm
870 WWL, New Orleans, LA, post-game interview with Slidell coach, "River Parish Player of the Week" announcement 9:40 pm
930 UNID game way down in the mess, one team seemed to be "Yukon" (or UConn??), gave up 9:48 pm
1010 KBBW, Waco, TX, awful game audio---sounded like a remote broadcast using a cell phone---then studio ID "You're listening to Cougars FB on 10-10 KBBW" 9:53 pm
1250 KZDC, San Antonio, TX Memorial vs, Alamo Heights 10:04 pm
1640 KNID, Enid, OK, HS football scoreboard show, asking listeners "north of the border in Kansas" to call in with scores to 1-888-97-SCORE; sorely tempted
to call in some bogus scores but I refrained.
While listening for HS FB DX last night, I nulled KOA-850 at 9:36 pm and the result was all IBOC digihash on the channel----and it was loud!
While listening to KOKC-1520 at 10:15 pm, there was considerable IBOC digihash mixed in with them, and it couldn't be eliminated no matter how I tried to null it. In fact, the 1500-1530 range is "IBOC alley" and sounds like absolute hell; I could easily see someone not familiar with IBOC thinking something was wrong
with their radio while tuning there.
On the other hand, the 1181 kHz was really strong last night.
9/28
Bleahh. . . . . propagation on the upper end of the AM band was crappy last night---lots of up and down signals with a pipeline into Mexico----but here's what
I caught (all times Central):
1660 KRZI, Waco, TX, halftime of Waco High game, Waco leading 9-7 so no doubt much happiness among the listeners 8:36 pm. Lots of kywave/groundwave mixing made this one hard to copy.
1640 KNID, Enid, OK, "game of the week" with muddy audio but 8:42 pm went to string of spots with much better audio, including one for Henniger Allen funeral
home in Enid ("family owned and operated").
1630 KKGM, Fort Worth, TX, with "Dragons" vs. "Chargers" FB, IDed 8:51 pm via a mention of the "player of the game" award courtesy of "Family
Diagnostics" in Irving, TX.
1620 WTAW, College Station, TX, HS FB scoreboard show 8:53 pm, again a lot of skywave/groundwave mixing.
1600 "Bears" vs. "Central" in mess 8:57 pm, but just too much QRM to extract an ID from the bits and pieces that managed to surface.
1540 "Buffalo" game, bits and pieces of audio in the mess on channel, got my hopes up at 9;12 pm when the announcer said, "we'll pause a second for station
identification," which was then followed by "AM 15-40"----and that was it, and right back to the game!! I decided then I was not in favor with the DX gods and gave up for the rest of the evening!
BTW, I'll soon be operating in the Texas QSO party; I'll be around 14225-14250 kHz running QRP at 5 watts. If anyone manages to hear me, send me a report and I'll respond with a beautiful Carolina Blue W5HOLH QSL card!

I did a cursory dial scan last night, and a more detailed one tonight.
Last night's was at around 10 o'clock PDT. I expected to find more than I
did. I didn't listen to KFBK itself, but heard no his around it.
I heard no hash from KEX, but read today that they started it at midnight.
(Guess they hadn't reset the timer from Thursday night.)
The biggest issue Friday night was the hiss that made listening to the
Canadian 800 problematic.
But then there's tonight.
KFI is too weak here to damage anybody, although it could if local KCIS-630
was nulled. (Different story if KFI was full power.)
There was a bit of hiss on 800, but nowhere near what I heard last night.
Strong hiss on the upper side of KPUG-1170, Bellingham, Washington. Some
hiss on KOFI-1180, but little (if any) on 1200 in Vancouver BC, which was
strong enough to wipe it out anyway.
Now to KFBK, where results were markedly different.
1520 in the Portland area was hissy when it was at normal levels, but during
fades it was submerged in a sea of HD noise.
Massive hiss on the upper side of KXPA-1540 in Bellevue, which I don't think
the average listener would tolerate. I presume this was also from KFBK,
since I doubt that 1550 in Vancouver WA runs HD.
And yes, Patrick, KFBK's audio is now one of the worst I've ever heard, and
it used to be great.
Maybe not as bad as WOAI, but close. Forgetting HD for a moment, I don't get
the concept that audio on a lower-fidelity bandshould be further reduced for
_any_ reason. Limited audio has got to have a negative effect,
psycho-acoustically.
9/13
Taking a quick band scan before heading of to bed and to catch the first of the 24/7 IBOC transmissions....well the buzz is as bad as I thought it would be. WLW is quite difficult to listen to...normally very clear. Most...not all, but seems like most of the NYC AM's have IBOC running tonight...for the exception of WCBS and WINS...tomorrow though might be different. WPHT 1210 has digital crap spewed all the way from 1195khz to 1225khz!
It'll be interesting to see how long other stations that are being interfered with tolerate this...or until AM broadcasters turn it off due to the lack of education about its existence or due to the incompatibility of the IBOC transmission mode on MW.
Here;'s is my first log of the new season

I DXed Thursday and Friday nights from my midwestern DX paradise spot in Grafton WI atop a the bluff 150 ft above the Lake Michigan shore. The previous Sunday night had also featured good TA cx and I had clear suspicions of both Portugal and Canaries under phase nulled semi local WGN (91 miles South and 50 kw ND) but wasn't able to be sure on //'s for either.
This time I laid out longer BOG's than the previous hoping for emphesis on the lower end and indeed the two BOG's 490 ft // 670 feet seemed somewhat better for the low end than the previous 335 ft // 485 used. I simply parked in a spot further down my driveway and accepted a bit of a bend. The BOG's start out at about 60 deg and end up aiming close to 70 deg for a slight curved bend and averaging about 65 degrees. As noticed before when aiming ENE I get CFOS much clearer through WIND 560 (SSE) with the longer BOG's. The length
difference of 180 ft was chosen since my experience indicates that this is a good difference for phasing lower band back end QRM while not nulling or even slightly enhancing signals from the desired direction.
The results of my setup and lake coast QTH (a good 100 miles of water in the direction of the lower path western Medit area TA's) would not dissapoint me and note that the bearing from Grafton to Madrid is 61 degrees and to Lisbon 65 degrees. Local sunset is about 7:30 PM (0030) and unlike on the Atlantic coast TA's don't tend to come in well over an hour prior to sunset. Friday night was a bit better than Thurs and by 0023 the big Spaniard on 684 had a rather readable signal and by 0045 the lower half of the dial was full of TA's while the upper half only had a few really strong ones barely audible.
720 had the typical somewhat mellow music (lots of American, but some other stuff) played by Portugal around 0115 and also at times some Spanish talk, but on Thurs I could get any //'s. With the Portugese running only 10 kw and having big slop on 666 and also on 693 Azores (CINF is nasty) it is not easy to get clear copy of a //.
Anyhow I continued to tune around, log TA's and some eastern Canadians and again WTME 780's 310 watt PSSA from Western Maine.
At 0400 8/31 there was a newscast u/phased WGN but I just couldn't pin it down as Portugese and into the typical music it went.
Around 0500 it seemed that Spanish stations really picked up strength. I was certain the news and programing on 720 was // other RNE's and this was mostly atop other stations, including (if I adjusted the phasing a bit, XEDE's Mexican mx u/WGN).
Spain uses several pips on the half hour with the final one longer and at 0530 my dream came true as there they were on 720 // the network and with a RNE ID ! I soon tuned to 747 and noted a couple Canarias ments so they may have been in local pgmg briefly, and things like 837 were cleanly listenable with ease (WHAS 840 nicely nulled by these BOG's).
OK one down one to go on 720, but by 0545 most TA's have faded and a tired KAZ drives his DX car up his driveway and goes to bed.
On 8/31 TA cx seemed even better and it was quite clear to me that the language on 720 u/phased WGN (S9+15 to 20 knocked down to S7-8 (hard to phase groundwave and short skywave) was continental Portugese (sounds a bit different that Brazilian) but I couldn't copy a // 666 or 693 clear enough to be sure. As for the previous night, most every TA channel below 900 produced audio.
As the time neared 0300 9/1 cx picked up even more and the station on 720 atop the WGN/XEDE phase null had a song that featured distinctive piano mx and I managed a 100% positive // to what was on 666 coming through the WSCR (somewhat phased by the null on WGN) and WFAN slop.
Ask me if I miss 720 CHTN's Oldies ? ... well NOT !!
Again lots of TA's still audible and a new logging for me of Spain on 783 (Mauretania can sometimes be heard here earlier and always seems to be an early arrival het at least). Also bits of SS on 648 // others were noted for a new one. 549 had Algeria // the weakly modulated powerhouse on 891 that was strong enough to make it unpleasent to listen to WLS on the car rx. 612 has Morocco and some AA mx reach audibility from the badly modulated but strong signal on 711. A few days prior when cx were decent to somewhat more northern
Europe there was some French on 711.
More northerly TA paths had a few stations but nothing like the many from the western Medit area. 1089 UK audible occasionally as was 909. 567 Ireland was decent around 0350, but the previous night had SS // the others when Spainaird really faded up. 1134 Croatia sometimes could put fair audio past my big local pest on 1130.
High band was less active although the common big signal from the mega Saudi on 1521 was in, but faded about 0255, and I could get just some audio on 1584 with SER// 1575 and also SS mx from Ceuta. 1602 pushed some SS audio past 1600 QRM where nothing was strong.
I feel that this Lake Michigan QTH provides mabe 10 to 12 dB enhanced of stations towards the east when compared to my home inland QTH in Illinois. I have only DXed in WI for at most 25 sessions and have loads of eastern US and Canada domestics heard that have been unheard inland or maybe only once or twice over the years.
Very happy to finally have some TA's logged on domestic channels from the midwest. My previous have only been two tentatives on 1530 with eastern Euro languages seemingly right for Vatican at the time, but never catching an ID or IS and not being fully readable.
9/15
I just did my first quick scan under the New World Order. I double-scanned the low stuff (640 to 890), about five minutes apart. In some cases, I'm not totally sure whether I was hearing IBOC hash or some similar noise (at night the distinctive sound *sometimes* seems less obvious with other interference mixed in).
IBOC-like noise:
650, 670, 690, 700, 720, 730, 760, 780, 1360
I haven't kept up with who's on at night already, but was definitely hearing noise on 650 the second time I went through the lower band. It had sounded normal the first time. 670 sounded somewhat trashed, but 650 was much more obvious. Is WFAN using nighttime IBOC? First time through the lower end, 700 was being *destroyed* and 720 was suffering (WOR IBOC). That kind of shocked me as WLW is so strong at night here (I often hear them, at least faintly, during mid-days in the winter). Second time around WLW was strong as ever, but 690 was in full ocean mode and 730 sounded messed up. Both 760 and 780 were suffering. Is WABC in OBOC? The strangest thing is the strong IBOC-like noise on 1360. 1370, WSPD, Toledo is strong here. Maybe they're using IBOC, but 1380 sounded OK.
In response to something Scott Fybush asked about, WLAC was very strong, yet 1500 and 1530 were clean and clear... no sign of WLAC IBOC.
Also, I heard 1000 hertz hets on 620, 890 and 1520 (and maybe a few other frequencies I've forgotten)... also a het on 880.
9/13
Here's my very preliminary report for the first night of 24/7 IBOC:
I ran a "baseline" bandscan starting at 11:45 or so - started at 530 and
worked my way up the dial every 10 seconds or so, taking sketchy notes
and rolling audio, just to have some clips of what things sounded like
"before."
About 12:25 AM, I went back to the channels that were noted on the
mailing lists as running IBOC.
700 is still loud and clear here with WLW, just as it was before midnight.
720 is taking a beating from WOR - WGN is there, but with a lot of noise
over it that wasn't there before.
1090 has hash audible, but I can null the hash from WTAM and get clean WBAL.
1110 has some noise under WBT, but WBT is still listenable.
1130 still has clean WBBR, maybe even better than it was before midnight.
1150 still has some CKOC, no real sign of WRVA hash.
1200 was a mess anyway.
1220 still has WHK, with some noise beneath.
No obvious signs of hash anywhere else on the dial.
That was analog, on the R8A with the McKay Dymek DA5 antenna.
Now, heading for digital, to the Sangean HDT-1 with the supplied loop:
No sign of any HD signals on 700, 1100, 1140 or 1210 - not even the
callsign data that has come through via skywave on other signals (WBZ)
in the past.
WLW is reasonably clean in analog. WGN is audible, but with noise over it.
1090 and 1110 both clean in analog. 1130 and 1220 listenable as well.
Conclusions?
It's too soon to tell! None of my locals is running IBOC tonight - no
sign of it on WLGZ 990, WHAM 1180 or WHTK 1280. I'd expect WHAM, which
is ND-U, to have it on tomorrow night. I understand WLGZ and WHTK may
both have issues to resolve with their nighttime DAs.
If any of the NYC signals besides WOR have IBOC on now, I can't tell
from here. WSM and WSCR are clean here, ditto WGN/WBBM and WWL/WLS.
At least based on what's on RIGHT NOW (which can certainly change in a
day or a week), this barely impinges on any actual DX here. We'll see if
that remains the case as more stations sign on. I'm not looking forward
to my locals turning on 24/7 digital, in any case.
I hadn't heard our friend the Wobbler in a while, but there it is at 1241 AM EDT on 1100, wobblin' all over WTAM. Maybe that's why I can't hear them in digital?
9/18
I tried something different tonight - instead of sitting at home, I headed out and tried the dials from two different car radios. (Well, OK, I had to work, covering local primary races for WXXI.)
In any event, I traded the R8A/McKay Dymek DA-5 and the Sangean HDT-1 in
my shack for the factory Delco radio in WXXI's Chevy news van, and later on for the factory radio in my 2003 VW Jetta.
The initial DX "target," since the Red Sox were playing as I was driving around, was WTIC on 1080. In the van, there was a whistly hiss behind WTIC for much of my drive south from downtown Rochester, but not objectionable enough to prevent me from listening to the game. (There was more noise at several LED traffic lights I was stopped at.)
After the game ended (don't wanna talk about it!), I started dialing around, and found a few distinctly ugly parts of the dial. WJR/WABC created an ugly mess that stretches from the top side of the CHWO 740 signal, obscures WSB, makes WJR and WABC both hard to listen to in analog, and put some hiss over WBBM, which was quite strong tonight and mostly overcoming the noise.
WLW/WOR was bad news, too, with lots of noise making CINF essentially unlistenable and "mutual destruction" between WLW and a weak WOR as well. WGN wasn't very good, either, with lots of noise over it. CKAC on 730 was fairly listenable.
Driving home, I spent some time listening to my semi-local WYSL on 1040,
which runs 500 watts from 20 miles south of here, but enjoys - rather, enjoyed - a fairly quiet channel and a good pattern aimed north into Rochester. It was getting smashed up badly by WBZ hash, just as WYSL owner Bob Savage has long feared. KDKA was also getting hashed. And, interestingly, WBZ's analog signal has sounded downright lousy on the nights they've had the HD running. I'm listening to Steve LeVeille's talk show on 'BZ as I type this, back home with the Drake on, and the hash behind it, which I can only assume is WHO's sideband, keeps rising up and at points makes BZ unlistenable.
One more mess as I drove home was 1090, where WBAL was clobbered by the
double-whammy of WTIC below and WTAM above. WBBR on 1130 was also
getting whacked by WRVA noise.
Listening now (12:22 AM) on the Sangean, I'm getting no HD signals to decode except local WHAM. Not even WPHT 1210, which is very strong and stable here, is making the HD indicator flicker.
Disappointing, on many fronts...and one wonders how much worse it might get in, say, mid-December.
9/19
On the way back from a meeting east of Rochester tonight, I spent some
time assessing the interference situation and seeing if there was any DX
to be had underneath...and here's what it sounded like around 9 PM,
about 6 miles east of Rochester (Penfield NY) on the 2003 VW Jetta
factory radio:
670 WSCR clear, possible WWFE (or Cuba?) in Spanish underneath - no IBOC
from WFAN, thanks to the Mets game
690 CINF hashed into unlistenability
700 WLW clear
710 WOR clear but weak
720 WGN fairly clear, occasional hash as I drove
750 WSB severe hash
760 WJR very loud and clear
770 WABC **almost unlistenable under very heavy hash, presumably WJR's -
this is the worst it's been since night HD started**
800 CKLW clear
810 WGY clear
820 WWLZ/CHAM usual jumble - WGY IBOC off tonight?
890 WLS very clean - no WCBS IBOC during Yankees game
1020 KDKA moderate hash, not unlistenable though
1030 WBZ clean but weak
1040 WYSL under mild, but not unlistenable hash from WBZ - but also some
WHO audio underneath, which is rare here since WYSL went on the air at night
1070 CBA listenable but some mild hash
1080 WTIC clear with Red Sox game (grrr....)
1090 WBAL audible but minor WTIC/WTAM hash
1100 WTAM clear
1110 WBT weak, but probably a result of propagation, not hash
1120 KMOX weak but listenable, no hash
1200 WAGE-VA? - same sports talk as WBAL, surprisingly good over/under
hash from WPHT
1220 WHK weak under WPHT hash
1290 UnID - sports talk about C.C. Sabathia - who? (Not WHIO-OH, which
is doing Michael Savage at 9.) (this is next to super-local WHTK 1280,
which has IBOC by day but not yet at night.)
The real surprise tonight was just how bad WABC was under WJR. The
interplay between WABC and WJR has been extremely variable. Back home,
an hour later and about 5 miles west, and on the R8A instead of the car
radio, WABC is back to full quieting and WJR's taking noise.
9/17
I've been hearing another almost-1kHz tone on 890kHz. The het seems to
be generated by a steady signal (carrier?) at about 890.98kHz. This
one is definitely NOT exactly on 891kHz.
Is anybody else hearing this? Or do I have a local pest?
9/22
I've been in Orlando over a year now and I've never sat down and done a complete day time MW band scan. I figured it was about time. So I started yesterday and spent another hour on it today. Today's session was cut short by approaching storms. (It's starting to look really nasty out.)
I see bandscans from some of you guys where you cover the whole MW band in one sitting. I don't know how you do it. It takes me hours to cover even half the band.
I'm not sure what exactly was up today, but I was getting S5 background noise across the entire band. Usually the background noise here doesn't even register on the S-meter. I didn't notice it yesterday. Hopefully it's just some freak atmospheric thing.
For this report I used my AR7030+ and Quantum QX Pro antenna. All times are UTC. 'p' following call sign means "presumed". LSB/USB indicated after frequency if used to avoid splatter.

At 10:30 p.m. CDT, I'm getting discernible IBOC hash only on 880, 900 and 1100. This leads me to believe that KMKI-620 and KRLD-1080 haven't turned on night-time IBOC. If WOAI-1200 is running IBOC, signals from 1190 and 1210 are overriding it ... and there is no strong, dominant station on either frequency.
But my primary hobby thrusts currently are genealogy and writing for the weekly Krum Star, so I'm not as concerned, I guess, as I should be.

I hooked my HD100 up to the LF engineering antenna, using a spare
ericson engineering 50 ohm to 500 ohm balun/unun. The 500 ohm isolated
section goes to the push terminals on the back of the Hd100 and the
coax goes to the 50. Works very well - the HD100 is pretty hot on AM!
pulls in 1030 WBZ, 850 WEEI and 680 WRKO quite decent here, even at mid
day. Listening to WBZ right now.
I guess you could say my shack is IBOC ready.

No lock, but some blue light flashers: 710 WOR, 1100 WTAM, 1210 WPHT.
No flashing blue light on WBZ, WFAN, WCBS, WABC etc. Using the HD100
for this.
Did a quick bandscan with the NC-173 - WOR definately mushing up WLW and WPHT messing 1200 and 1220. But at this distance, its pretty subtle. Tried the R-390A - the fuzz was very noticeable on 16 and 8 KC BW, gone on 4 and 2. Suspect R-390A prices will skyrocket.
Tried the Drake R8 - it fights the fuzz better than the NC-173 but nothing compared to the R-390A.
The happy news for those who don't want to lift 75 lbs - the HD100 ights the fuzz about as well as the R-390A!

Here is a dragon breath DX survey tonight in PEI:
660 WFAN NYC NY very strong analogue signal, flashing blue light, almost locked once but hasn't actually done it so far. pretty good neighbour - not trashing 650 or 670.
700 WLW - getting some flashing blue light when its signal fades in.710 WOR NYC NY very strong analogue signal, no lock, lots of flashing blue light. Hissing up 700 WLW and 720 WGN. But honestly, I can still hear both of those stations under the WOR hiss. Neither WLW or WGN ever hammers in here.
760 WJR - lots of flashing blue light when they fade in strong. when they fade out, lots of hiss from...
770 WABC - lots of flashing blue light. Hisses up WJR nicely when WJR fades. WABC at times trashes 780 CFDR which has a strong signal here day and night.
810 WGY - flashing blue light when they fade up
840 WHAS - flashing blue light when they fade up
890 WAMG - occassional flashing blue light - suspected WLS in background
1080 WTIC - flashing blue light. Trashes 50KW near local 1070 CBA. But it seems to be a rough night for CBA at the moment as I just logged 1070 CHOK Sarnia ON with C&W- confirmed by listening on line to compare First time! Proof you can still DX through IBOC dragon breath.
1100 WTAM - flashing blue light. Trashing WBT.
1120 KMOX - flashing blue light. Nice jazz!
1180 WHAM - flashing blue light and whamming WWVA big time with dragon breath.
1210 WPHT - flashing blue light - not bothering CFGO at all but dragon breath all over 1220.
1500 WTWP - very occasional flashing blue light - suspect a co-channel
1510 WWZN - very occasional flashing blue light - once again, I suspect another station on 1510
Flash update - on 660 WFAN just got their callsign on the display - maybe they will be my first lock???

Here is the PEI IBOC report for tonight - Sept 19/07 at approx
midnight ADT. Drake R8 with LF Eng M-601C:
650 HISS nothing underneath
660 WFAN
670 WSCR with background hiss [rare treat to get WSCR, as normally
its our Cuban friends coming in to PEI]
700 HISS nothing underneath
710 WOR with a powerful 1KHz het
720 WGN with a growl underneath - reminds me of the Montreal versus
Toronto battle for 1610
730 CKAC clear as a bell
750 CBGY fading up and down slowly with hiss noted on fade downs
760 WJR with strong background hiss - at times the hiss wipes out WJR
770 WABC with slight background hiss
780 CFDR rising and falling over hiss
800 VOWR with hiss
810 WGY
820 Unid - the hiss is strong enough I can't for the life of me ID
anything
870 jumble no hiss
880 WCBS - my HD100 suggests they are not running IBOC at the moment
890 jumble with strong het, no hiss
1020 KDKA almost buried in hiss
1030 WBZ slight background hiss
1040 garbled jumble with hiss
1070 CBA with strong hiss
1080 WTIC
1090 WBAL with hiss and het

I did a cursory dial scan last night, and a more detailed one tonight.
Last night's was at around 10 o'clock PDT. I expected to find more than I
did. I didn't listen to KFBK itself, but heard no his around it.
I heard no hash from KEX, but read today that they started it at midnight.
(Guess they hadn't reset the timer from Thursday night.)
9/29
Brent Taylor asked me to relay his info and loggings from Miscou. I
guess you could say that this is the work of the MRRL [Maritime Radio
Relay League]:
Antenna is working great @ sunset. Full ID from Algeria Chaine 1 on
702, and lots of Spaniards as usual.
Might be a good African night with the K-index so jumpy.
The antenna that Brent refers to is a EWE, which I sometimes refer to
as a sheep antenna. I am looking forward to getting some sheep
antenna experience by helping him put something up at his QTH -
likely a EWE with the null pointed towards the IBOC ladden USA NE.
9/16
Just did a band scan 2315-2330 PDT 9/16/07 from San Francisco CA....
Only IBOC/HD stations causing any problems here are my three locals,
810-KGO, 910-KNEW & 1050-KTCT + 1160 KSL. My 3 locals obliterate
adjacent frequencies entirely but 2nd adjacent are received with no
problem (or hiss). KSL now might be in for trouble. Their IBOC is most
definitely interfering with semi-local KLOK's signal. S.F. is
considered in KLOKs listening area. KSLs hiss really cuts into KLOKs
signal. Doesn't bother 1150 as much, altho the hiss is there.
Neither KEX-1190 or KFBK-1530 seemed to have their IBOC on at the time I
listened as adjacent frequencies were in very well with no hiss noted.
This was not the case last night. 1080 still has a hiss below
Portland/Santa Cruz but not a bad one.
Could be (and may be) worse.
9/21
We've been visiting in Bozeman, Montana, and have been here since nighttime
IBOC started. Finally had a chance to try
the radio (YB400) last nite. Was surprised that only KSL seemed to have
dominent digihash but it was surely dominent!.
KSL's hash completely obiterated 1150 and 1170 early in the evening. Given
that, I have to wonder on the digihash's
impact on some of the closer-by stations on 1150 (in particular, Shelby,
Mont.). Would also be interesting to see if KSL
impacts the LA 1150 station in its fringe. To paraphrase a song in the
play "Avenue Q": IBOC Sucks!
9/17
Noted local KOGO-600 running IBOC when I tuned in 20-30 minutes before sunrise this morning. Not sure if they had it on all night. Will try to remember to check tonight...
9/20
KFBK-1530 did not seem to be running IBOC tonight.
KMIK-1580 was running IBOC and completely ruining 1570 and 1590 (which their sloppy signal used to do before IBOC, but still...).

590 WCAB Rutherfordton, NC
610 WFNZ Charlotte, NC
640 WFNC Fayetteville, NC
1550 WBSC Bennettsville, SC
For sure WFNZ was not on night pattern as the night pattern throws NOTHING my way. At night it doesn't come close to making it to the NC/ SC border. Signal
was very strong.
WFNC was good and strong tonight. They have 1000 watts night non DA. Not necessary to cheat. It may be they were on night power.
WCAB has a couple hundred watts at night. I heard another station also doing FB, but they might actually be on correct power. The low power for them gets out
well at night.
WBSC um well, maybe on DA pattern and night power but the DA has been messed up for some time. It's for saleand fairly cheap. No SS station blasting in made this possible.
9/15
Got HD PSD on WTAM only.
WLAC is decoding most of the time. WTWP very strong, but not running HD I think. WCKY is carrying a football game and is NOT carrying it.

630 KIDD Monterey, CA is usually around 629.997 kHz.This morning 09/12/07 at 1030 PDT / 1730 UTC, I measured them as 630.00000 kHz. By 1117/1817 they had returned to 629.99712. Possibly KIDD was testing an IBOC exciter
without actually using IBOC.
1140 KHTK Sacramento, CA was on 1140.00000 kHz in late August. I didn't hear them using IBOC, but I hope they tried it and didn't like it. After about a week they returned to their usual frequency of about 1139.998 kHz. These days, finding a station operating precisely on their assigned frequency can be bad news for DXers.
My location called 108 Mile Ranch is about 300 miles northeast of
Vancouver in central B.C. I am on the south Cariboo plateau at an
elevation of 3127 feet. Antennas used are an elevated 1/4 wave 7MHz
vertical (Steppir) with 14 radials and a 283-foot horizontal delta
loop at 80 feet high sloping toward the southeast. The vertical
usually delivers the stronger signal. Radio is a Kenwood TS-950SDX.
This is not a complete bandscan, but all I've had time for right now.
Quite time consuming to do the whole band! I wanted to do a complete
one since there seems to be none from the west coast. I'll keep
working....
The dates and times in this report are ELT (Eastern Local Time) which
means UTC-4. The date format is month/day.

Pakistan, a country I seldom hear on SW was audible after dark last night, listed in Urdu to SE Asia, on 11580 after 0100z. With the equinox approaching, the grayline is good for North America to Asia. Urdu, I think, is native to Pakistan and Afghanistan. Perhaps a broadcast to SE Asia is for expats or workers abroad. In any case, NA is off the back of the beam so even less power directed our way.
9/22
This morning (22 Sep) I logged three Australian MW stations, one from Hawaii and a presumed MW logging from N Korea. Very little atmospheric noise this morning in Waco.
Hah, had you there.
Technically 120m is MW, although most of us wouldn't consider them in the same class. But, for those of us out in the middle, it's probably the only way
we'll hear Trans Pacific MW.
ABC NT 2310 Alice Springs at 1145z
ABC NT 2325 Tennant Creek at 1145z
ABC NT 2485 Katherine at 1145z
All three stations carried the same program but Alice and Tennant lagged by (maybe) a quarter second.
Hawaii of course was WWVH on 2500. I wonder how much their coverage area is improved owing to the fact that the WWV carrier suppresses atmospheric
noise leaving WWVH in the clear.
North Korea on 2625.2 at 1135z is presumed, all I could really hear was a wobbling carrier. I'll bet the program sounded really bad.
** CUBA. RHC, 13680, out of whack again Sept 4 at 1320, putting out several
spurs, consisting of whine of medium pitch and slightly varying with modulation
also audible; somewhat distorted on fundamental, and extremely distorted on
spurs, which extended almost 5 kHz plus and minus from: 13771, 13728, 13634,
13589, 13540, which are respectively these offsets: +91, +48, -46, -91, -140
kHz. Pinning them down is difficult, so rounding off the closer ones to 47
would make a nice match, but double of that would be 94, not 91. Plus 140 was
probably there too but, guess what, buried in jamming against R. Martí ---
could this problem be involved with the 13820 jamming transmitter, anyway? I
did not hear the roaring jamming sounds on the RHC spurs, however
** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Almost nightly I tune around 49m in the 0500-0600
period, but Sept 6 is the first time I find 6025 active at that hour: after
lite gospel music, 0600 full ID as ``La emisora predilecta de la República
Dominicana, Radio Amanecer Internacional``. Also slogan in Spanish along the
lines of ``we love everyone, even those who don`t share our views``. Fair
signal; before 0600 it was tightly squeezed between CRI 6020 and Martí 6030, so better after CRI off and one could side-tune down a bit
** GUATEMALA. R. Verdad, 4052.5, usually audible here; noted Sept 4 at 0545,
playing choral hymn with considerable distortion
** GUIANA FRENCH. After a 3-week + 2-day-weekend summer vacation, TDF DRM is back, buzz heard again Monday Sept 3 at 1413 on 17870-17875-17880. But it was gone again on Tue Sept 4 at several chex, 1405, 1428, 1630, 1730. If I were a fan of these transmissions I would be getting pretty exasperated. But the more misses, the more chances for analog stations such as Libya to be heard. DRM back on again already at 1358 check Sept 6
** INDONESIA. Tuning 60m a bit earlier than I usually do, around 1230 UT Sept
6, pleased to find several RRI outlets audible. Best without any interference
was 4605; also 4790 with CODAR QRM; 4870 with bonker QRM; 4750 and 4920 both with co-channel broadcast QRM, probably China. Each had different programming, some music, some talk
** U S A [non]. Another semihour we can forget about hearing XEXQ, 6045, even
if it is on: 0500-0530. VOA Săo Tomé noted signing off after Hausa, Sept 5 at
0530
** VENEZUELA [non]. I noted that it was on the air Saturday Sept 1; however, on
Sunday Sept 2 at 1915, 15290 was missing. Aló, Presidente was still running on
11875, so that would be because of transmitter availability and/or
non-competition with another Venezuelan service. However2, rechecking both
frequencies at 1957, 15290 was on wrapping up RNV CI service, and 11875 was
off, so they made the switch sometime in the interim
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. R. Solh, via UK, had not been audible for a couple of
weeks, but propagation is improving a bit. In fact, Saturday Sept 8 from before
1400 past 1600, 17700 was fairly audible here with almost continuous music, and
also on Sept 9
** ALASKA. Besides Schickele Mix, another real fun radio show is on the way
out. I think produxion ceased several years ago, and indeed its home station
WVXU no longer exists as an independent entity, but a few stations have still
been running RIDERS RADIO THEATRE, a weekly semihour of humourous skits, faux-radio drama, and cowboy songs that your commercial country station would not be caught dead playing.
See previous item in DXLD 6-011. 21 months later, Publicradiofan.com now has
only three airings, not including the one we just heard UT Sat Sept 8 at
0230-0300 on KCHU 770 Valdez but whose stream is unfortunately only 16 kbps.
WVRU still has RRT on their schedule Sat 1200 UT, followed by the companion
show COW PIE RADIO, neither confirmed as scheduling and webcasting from this station have been unreliable in the past. PRF also has it Sat 1330 on KGLP, but it is not on their grid now, and webcasting is still suspended. Nor does it now
show on the KSUT grid at the same time. Anyhow, we know it is still running on
KCHU (na zdar!) Friday nights. And the Riders are still plenty busy touring;
catch them in person if you can. Also have, of course a blog via
** GERMANY [non]. DW via RWANDA, Sept 7 at 2130 on 15205 with usual excellent signal which could be mistaken for a NAm instead of a WAf service, magazine show of several stories, including problems of Turkish Moslems in Germany and Moroccans in Netherlands; Jews in Berlin, the ``most cosmopolitical city``, then chopped off at 2157 sharp before show was over. This is no mistake, but built into the system. The question is, why don`t they match the program lengths to the transmitter availability?
** LAOS [non]. Reconfirmed Hmong Lao Radio running on 11785, Sunday Sept 9
until 1359 WHRI ID, but for some reason retuned at 1404, and heard more Hmong!
Just in time for ID in passing as Hmong World Christian Radio, with St. Paul
address, website. This is still missing from the WHR online schedule, just
showing it as Tue & Thu 12-13 on 12135, which is KWHR. So the additional Hmong presumably runs another hour at least on Sunday mornings until 1500. Unless you understand Hmong, this one is also worth listening to for the exotic music
** MEXICO. XERTA, 4810 missing around 0530 check Sept 9. Thierry Fricot in the DF explains why, forwarding a bulletin from XE1RCS wherein the station says they are off for 30-60 days as they are replacing their antenna. Now, is the
blob of noise on the high side of 4810 gone with it?
** SOUTH AFRICA. Must be Channel Africa, as scheduled in English during this
hour on 17770, but Sept 7 at 1427 found open carrier only, 1428 off, 1429 back
on for a few sex with English talk, off again
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. Sept 13 at 1325 good signal with Qur`an on 15680, then lecture in non-Arabic; 1330 audio cut off in mid-word, but carrier on until
almost 1335. Per Aoki this is R. Free Afghanistan, via Sri Lanka, scheduled in
Pashto until 1330. So the USG is promoting Islam to the exclusion of other
religions? Afghanistan is as we know, destined to become a Korean-Christian
country
** ALBANIA [and non]. R. Tirana, 13750, with usual deep fades into the TVI, but
readable at peaks in between, Sept 13 at 1315. Now has slight QRM from Cuba`s new 13760, but more QRM from something on 13745, which is supposedly Rwanda, active only on Fri and Sat until 1315, but this was Thursday. Tirana did not go off until 1331 after another program had started
** BIAFRA [non]. One biweek later, just in case, checked again the scheduled
other time for V. of Biafra International, Wed 1915-1945 on WHRA 13710 --- no,
from 1925 to 1932, just the usual WHR gospel fill music and ID. Is it still on
the imaginary schedule? Yes, on WHR website, by searching on VOBI in specific
program criteria, there it is, and also still showing wrong frequency for the
non-imaginary Friday broadcast at 20-21 on WHRI, really 15665, not 17650
** CUBA. Ah, another day, another transmission problem. Sept 10 at 1426, I
found the very strong RHC transmitter on 13680 also putting out spurious audio,
but this time without great distortion or additional noises. First noticed on
13760.0, RHC Spanish audio but under-modulated, and other audio underneath, CRI English, same as relay on 13740. Then same found, but much weaker, on 13720.0.
No other such spurs found below 13680 or above 13760. These do not follow the
usual leapfrog pattern, so who knows how they come about. Heard on both the
FRG-7 with external antenna and the YB-400 with internal antenna.
Rechecked at 2125 the situation becomes clearer, as undermodulated RHC Spanish // 9550 is still, or more likely again, on 13760, but only on 13760, no 13680 or any other frequency on the band. So that means 13760 is a new deliberate frequency, and 13720 heard earlier was a leapfrog mixing product over 13740 CRI relay. During the hours RHC is using it, the main other occupant of 13760 is Voice of Korea: Commies vs Commies!
Another check, Sept 11 at 1351: 13760 with RHC as before, and also on weaker
13720, a leapfrog over 13740 CRI relay which is only in open-carrier warmup at
this time, so nothing but RHC audio on 13720. This time with another receiver I
compared audio on 13680, and there was an echo between them, proving that 13760 and 13680 are at two different sites.
Another2 check of RHC`s new 13760, Sept 12 at 1402: it and the mixing product
on 13720 were audible again during frequency announcement, to which 13760 has indeed been added, but 9600 has not been removed, despite our pointing out that it goes off reliably over an hour earlier, at 1300. Also plugged upcoming Mesa Redonda this date at 2230 on 9820 and 6000 about --- guess what? ``Los 5 Héroes``!! Now what would Cuba do if it caught 5 Americans, especially gusanos, spying inside Cuba? Don`t ask! (
** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. R. Amanecer Internacional was on late again Sept 13, on 6025, noted at 0620 with lite gospel music, 0622 talk in Spanish about sunlight taking 8 minutes to get here, and then incidence of skin cancer: Adventist obsession with health matters
** GERMANY [non]. Noticed DW in // on 17800 and much weaker 17770, Sept 13 at 1335, but a slight reverb between them due to different sites. Per Aoki this is Hausa, via Rwanda and Portugal, respectively:
17770 DEUTSCHE WELLE 1300-1357 1234567 Hausa 500 150 Sines POR
17800 DEUTSCHE WELLE 1300-1400 1234567 Hausa 250 310 Kigali RRW
** MEXICO. Traces of XEYU again after missing for a week or two, Sept 13 at
1340, very weak carrier and traces of audio on 9599.3
** RUSSIA. VOR`s service to Asia in English is again becoming audible here way
off the back in the 1400 UT hour, best on 15605, and also // 15660. Per HFCC,
both are Moscow site; 15605 is 500 kW at 115 degrees, while 15660 is 250 kW at 100 degrees.
Monday Sept 10 until 1458 we were enjoying a program of old Russian 78 rpm
records (or 80?), but if there was an outro before the QSY announcement, we
didn`t catch it. So what show was it? Going to the website http://www.ruvr.ru
and clicking on English in the drop-down, we then find Guide to Programs
http://ruvr.ru/main.php?lng=eng&e=122&p= -- which gives a list of programs, but no times or frequencies!
Counter-intuitively, you have to go to Frequencies, http://ruvr.ru/main.php?lng=eng&e=152&p= eventually to reach further linx for the programming during each hour to each target area, clicking on Full Schedule (1400 and others no doubt duplicated, also to Eu and ME in this case).
So we get to Asia, Monday, and what do we find? The column of times does not
line up with the column of program titles. As we go down the page, they are
increasingly misaligned. Re-sizing or switching from Firefox to IE does not
help either; thus it must be built into their new php webpage. Geez! Starting
at the bottom and trying to follow which title goes with which semi-hour
segment somewhat higher, we think this must have been: ``Our Homeland``. But is that a musical show? Back to Guide to Programs:
``- Focuses on the old, new and latest history of Russia, its prominent and
ordinary citizens, both children and adults, this country’s political,
scientific and cultural life of the past and present. The program is an
addition to our regular feature THIS IS RUSSIA.``
Nothing musical mentioned there; maybe what we heard was fill afterwards, but
there must have been at least 10 minutes of it. Several music shows are on the
list; maybe it was Folk Box, from the type of music we were hearing, but no
sign of that anywhere nearby on the program schedule.
So VOR has this extensively detailed website, but it fails to convey accurate
info when we need it. And/or, the programmers fail to follow the published
schedule. Furthermore, all the times given are wrong, ignoring news on the hour
and half-hour.
More problems: we see typos in the program schedule, such as ``03.00-30.30``
repeated six times except Sunday when the out time is 04.00. Altho the schedule
is certainly in UT, this is not specified on the individual target area pages,
and the Listen Live spot at the upper right displays times of UT+4 as being
current, so that must be local Moscow time!
** VENEZUELA [non]. Checking RNV Sunday Sept 9 at 1905 via CUBA: unlike last week, RNV CI was underway as usual on 15290. Nothing audible on 17705, which Adán Mur in Paraguay, Conexión Digital, had reported at 1945 in mid-August. I wonder if the time was an hour off, as 17705 is normally used for the 20-21 UT transmission. Also, unlike previous weeks, the separate `Alo, Presidente` service was still running at 1905 on 11670, 11875 and 17750, but not on 13680. Thus I suspect the 13680 transmitter, if it was really on earlier, did not
check, is the one taken out of that for the regular RNV CI service to start at
1900 on 15290. A double-dose of Bolivarianism. Thank you, Habana!
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. R. Nacional de la RASD, 6300, Sept 13 at 0603 with Qur`an, but sounding quite distinctive from the mainstream Arabic version; 0612 a bit of music, and then a brief lecture; no sign of RHC mixing product tho
6060 and 6180 were both on; perhaps 6060 was too weak to make the leapfrog at the moment. SINPO 35333
** FRANCE [non]. As TDF continues its DRM tests on 17870-17875-17880 via Guiana French, M-F nominally from 1300, but sometimes not on until 1400, if at all, I wonder whether the RFI English broadcast at 1400 is ever put on this
transmitter? Or the one at 1600? I have never seen this reported by the few who
do have DRM receivers. If they did that, it might prompt North Americans to
make a bit more effort to decode it. But that would of course entail RFI
actually admitting that more in NAm understand English than French. They have
at least availablized the 1400 broadcast via the WRN NAm service, which is
entirely in English
** GABON. Afropop music distraxion, 17660, good signal on peaks but somewhat distorted with some deep fades, Sept 14 at 1358. During a brief pause I could hear something else underneath. Could Sawt al-Amal be back? Nothing else listed but NHK Yamata at 305 degrees. No sign of ANU 17630 or 19160
** LAOS [non]. Confirmed another hour of Hmong on WHRI, 11785, Sat Sept 15 at 1400, presumably Hmong World Christian Radio, the ID I heard on Sundays, both Sept 9 and 16
** MEXICO. XEYU, Radio UNAM: Besides the weak carrier I found at 1340 Sept 13, also heard much better at 1341 Sept 14 on 9599.2, Spanish discussion of state, federal and city politix. S9 +18 or SINPO 34443. Still needs more modulation but readable. Then at 0552 Sept 15 on 9599.2, good modulation in classical music, and signal stronger than JOZ3 on 9595
** RUSSIA. SW Asian music, with some buzz on 15510, Sept 14 at 1334. Thought it might be another motorboating transmitter, but with BFO on, the carrier was stable, so the buzz was only on the modulation. This is listed as VOR, Samara site in Pashto/Dari
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. More evidence that R. Solh, 17700 via UK, is playing
exactly the same program every day: Some days before, we had noticed the CD
skipping during music at 1346 UT, and exactly the same thing happened on Sept
19 and Sept 20. Altho we still haven`t found a new time for the old ``Solh
theme``, we enjoy especially the call-and-response tune at 1416 and the one
which follows at 1421, Sept 19 and presumably every day. Reception has
equinoxially improved lately
** ALBANIA. R. Tirana coming in well on 13750, Sept 18 at 1301, but in Albanian
instead of English! 1315 abruptly switched to English with ID, 1317 music.
Drita Çiço explains: ``Glenn, this was because of blocked radio/relay on Dajt
mountain. Sorry``
** AUSTRALIA [and non]. The 10 kW DRM from Brandon, 5990-5995-6000, was enough to QRM RHC on 6000, Sept 20 at 1247
** BULGARIA. R. Bulgaria, 15700, Sept 20 at 1325 was accompanied by ratchy
spurs at roughly 15685 and 15715 during talk modulation peaks; and 15700 itself
had a ringing sound in the background. Recheck at 1344 during music, no spurs
heard, perhaps modulated just enough less to avoid them
** JAPAN [and non]. R. Nikkei, 6055, JOZ2, plays some classical and other good
music, and is well worth listening to, despite being in Japanese --- except Wed
Sept 19 at 1315, there was a discussion with a segment every so often in
English! Perhaps it was just being translated into Japanese, but each segment
was fairly long and not faded under as for voice-over. 1329 sign-off
announcement with frequencies, callsigns, powers, 1330* Also listened Thu Sept
20 to some classical music but it was interrupted at 1244 for Japanese
announcements and ID. The radio was already tuned to 6055, since we had been enjoying the music on La Bańera de Ulises from Spain until 0555
** MEXICO. Keeping track of when XEYU is active: Sept 19 at 1333, Spanish
discussion about Mexican history, poor but readable on 9599.2
** TURKEY. VOT, 15450, Live from Turkey, Thu Sept 20 at 1250-1320, was
propagating much better as we get into equinox. The two hosts were gabbing as
usual, without any phone calls. They mentioned not having heard from former
regulars Christopher Lewis and David Crystal, and also that they were getting
so many calls that the phone lines were jammed and could not put them on the
air. I assume they were joking. Someone allegedly called but did not want to
reveal name or location; maybe on next week
** U S A. WBCQ advises us that from Sept 26, the Wednesday 2200 UT broadcast of WORLD OF RADIO on 7415 will be replaced by Thursday 2330 on 7415. This should improve propagation, being a sesquihour closer to darkness, but at 24+ hours later, will no longer be the first airing anywhere. The Wednesday 2300 on 18910-CLSB remains unchanged. We have been unable to hear any trace of this for months, just not propagating if really on the air
** BIAFRA [non]. V. of Biafra International via WHRI, 15665, Friday Sept 21 at
2041 tune in with speaker denouncing atrocities of Gowan, etc. Signal VG fading
deeply during which the long-path echo could be heard. 2053 played `God Bless
Africa`, 2055 sign-off ID still imagining it is on ``15.67 MHz``, some hilife
music and 2159 WHRI closing. Meanwhile, I was also hearing NIGERIA, q.v. It
seems VOBI has some vague plan to increase from weekly to daily broadcasts, so should check this on non-Fridays too
** CANADA. CKZU, 6160, Vancouver coming in well at 34443, Sept 22 at 1259 with ID as ``CBC Radio One in British Columbia``, plug local ``North by Northwest`` show following news, 1300 World Report
** ECUADOR. I just happened to be tuning past 11960 at 1314 UT Sept 21, and
heard yet another HCJB automated ID in Spanish STILL announcing both its
frequencies incorrectly. After a brief quotation from Plato (no Christian, he),
claimed to be on 11760 and 9745, and I had also just tuned by its weaker //
which is really 11690. Quite aside from its theology, HCJB`s credibility as a
SW broadcaster has reached rock-bottom
** EGYPT. R. Cairo, English to Europe, 9990, Sept 21 at 2155, woman speaking
but only bits of what she was saying could be heard at modulation peaks, and
then extremely distorted; music mixed in came thru with fewer dropouts, but
overall, a total loss, as it has been for sesquidecades, perhaps Egypt`s
greatest embarrassment (well, after civil rights violations). Moot from *2159
WWCR 9985 opening with steel drums
** HONDURAS. During 90m bandscan Sept 22 around 0545, besides REE Costa Rica on 3350 there was a much weaker Spanish signal on 3340, presumably HRMI active once again
** INDONESIA. 4750, presumed RRI Makassar, with muezzin at the rather late hour of 1338 UT Sept 21; not much else was left on 60m, not even Cuba 5025. High local noise level.
4790, presumed RRI Fak2, Qur`an at 1304 Sept 22; unlike the morning before,
this signal outshone 4750 which also had Qur`an but not //. 4605 weak with
talk, and nothing audible on 4870 or 4920
** NIGERIA. VON, 15120, very strong signal, even much stronger here than VOBI via WHRI 15665, as if in a radio war, Sept 21 at 2045 woman talking in English, but awful muffled modulation, so on that basis alone the choice between them was easy. Off at 2056*
** U S A. Very weak spur on 17919, and one matching on 17621, thus from KVOH 17775, Sept 21 at 2047. I could barely match the audio on modulation peaks. This is about what I would expect as the fundamental was not at super-strong level as it sometimes can be, bringing up the spur levels with it
** UKRAINE. Last spring, RUI announced plans to move the NAm transmitter from 7440 to 5830 on Sept 23, but this did not happen. We still heard it on 7440,
Sept 21 at 2315 check in Ukrainian, so presumably continuing until 0400
including the English hours at 0000 and 0300. This sked appears to be the
updated one: http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/index.php?id=162 showing some of the other planned changes did take place on Sept 20, not Sept 23, and some did not. English to Europe at 21 has moved to 5840, and 5830 is in use at 0000 and 0300, or does that transmitter stay in Ukrainian overnight?
** VENEZUELA [non]. RNV CI via Cuba, missing from 15290, at 1955 UT check Sept 21
** CHINA. Firedrake, against Sound of Hope, Sept 24 at 1308 check was audible
on 10300 and on 18180
** CUBA. Caught part of RHC`s Spanish DX program Sunday Sept 23 at 1343 on
11760, et al. – they were reading Iván López Alegría`s report on the Mexican DX
Encuentro, about their visit to XERTA, but strangely both Malena and Manolo
pronounced it like a word, ``Xerta`` = certa. I rather doubt the station itself
ever does this, but then I`ve hardly ever heard a clear ID
** INDIA. Not much was making it on 16m, Sept 24 at 1308; checking for Solh via
UK on 17700, I instead hear something in Chinese on 17705. Per EiBi this is
AIR: 17705 1145-1315 IND All India Radio M FE b It`s 500 kW, 58 degrees from Bangalore. No jamming audible tho the signal was weak
** ITALY. Rai, about to be snuffed out, conveniently heard here on 17780 to
NAm, Sept 27 at 1358 with chirping IS, 1400 beautiful opening theme and into
Italian program
** JAPAN. R. Nikkei, 6055, Mon Sept 24 at 1300 with apparent English lessons,
mostly in Japanese discussing English expressions. May be the same program I
heard previously with bits of English mixed in
** LAOS [non]. Expecting Hmong World Christian Radio via WHRI, 11785, as has been happening the last few Sundays, and Saturdays, after Hmong Lao Radio ends at 1400, but Sept 23 at 1435 check, this frequency was in WHRI gospel-rock fill music in English, so either HWCR was only a semihour, or it`s off the 1400 timeslot. It`s still missing from the WHR online program schedule
** MALI [and non]. Mauritania is a regular on 4845, especially during Ramadan,
as Sept 25 at 0605 with Qur`an. But this time with a weaker sidekick doing same
thing but not, of course, //, on 4835.6. That would be ORTM Bamako on its never
precise frequency. Since I seldom hear it, suspect it is irregular but more
likely to be active now
** MEXICO. At least on Sundays we can hear classical music rather than
news/talk during the 1300 UT hour from XEYU: Sept 23 at 1335 on 9599+,
Mendelssohn`s ``Midsummer Night`s Dream`` incidental music, imperfect for the
first day of autumn. F-G reception, little QRM.
Also Tue Sept 25 at 1303 with headlines quoted from and attributed to major DF
newspapers, interrupted by drumming, then into Noticias del Día for 25
September, from Radio Unam. Does this mean they are no longer recording it the night before as exposed in some Mexican publication?
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI 9615 is normally one of the best signals here around 0600, but not a trace of it Sept 26. Either the transmitter was off or there was a
drastic change in propagation. Recheck at 1330, it was in as normal on 6095
** UKRAINE. Just to be sure, checked RUI again UT Sept 25 at 0227 and yes, it
is still on 7440, not audible on 5820 --- or 5830, the European frequency,
which per WWORD quoted in DXLD 7-111 is indeed from a separate satellite feed without the English hours
** U K [non]. French on 6105, Sept 25 at 0615 with African news, new jingle and
soon IDed as BBC Afrique. Had not noticed this one before, perhaps because it`s
only a semihour daily at 0600, via Ascension at 27 degrees
UNIDENTIFIED. 9410, is it DRM or jamming? Some kind of noise, not very strong, at 1327 Sept 26. RNW and DRM DX schedules show nothing on 9410, but HFCC has something new from Kvitsoy, Norway at 0930-1600, 65 kW, 190 degrees since Sept 1. What programming, if really on the air?
** COLOMBIA. Marfil Estéreo, 5910 (just a smidgen on the low side), Sept 28 at
0525 with ID and timecheck for 12:31, then kid singing off-key, with harp
accompaniment. After 0530 marred by splatter from WBOH 5920 as it went from
music to preaching. If M.E. can`t even get timechex right to less than 6
minutes, how can we take their religion seriously?
** GUATEMALA [and non]. R. Verdad, 4052.5, Sept 30 at 0555 already playing
national anthem, horrible version by shrill off-key children`s choir, many
stanzas, off at 0559* without further announcement. This is a beautiful piece
of music I hate to hear ruined. Seek out a professional version of it with a
great tenor or professional choir. One can Google up many versions of it;
Here`s a midi with the lyrix displayed:
http://mi-guatemala.tripod.com/Himno.html
In fact, I love many Latin American national anthems, notably Mexico,
Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Venezuela, tho seldom get to hear any of them any more on SW; except Mexico, every midnight local on every MW & SW station
** INDONESIA. Yet another problem at VOI, 9525. Sept 28 at 1315 during Korean hour, bits of audio cut on and off at the rate of about 132 per minute.
Monitored this for two or three minutes and then moved on to Radio Australia
with no such problem. 1351 recheck, VOI was OK in Korean
** JAPAN [non]. NHK Warido via Sackville 11705, is normally QRM-free, but Sept 28 at 1332 I could hear something under it, maybe in Portuguese as I thought I heard Brasil mentioned a couple times. But then checking EiBi, the only
possibility is:
11705 1330-1530 Sa G BBC SWA EAf /AFS
11705 1530-1630 Sa G BBC SWA EAf /SEY
BBC in Swahili via South Africa, on Saturdays only, which would explain why I
haven`t noticed it on other days. From Oct NHK will switch to English at
1400-1430 so that could also be a QRM problem on Saturdays
** JAPAN [non]. NHK Warido, R. Japan, final one-hour broadcast to NAm at 0500 on 6110 via Canada, Sept 30: tune-in at 0545 during World Interactive. Quite a lot of QRM from off-frequency CVC Chile, and seemingly a third station,
probably Colombia Marfil/Conciencia leapfrog, one of them producing a low het
and the other a slightly higher one. Of course, Sackville itself could be
off-frequency as verified on various other transmissions, but did not try to
measure it. The QRM with music was especially annoying as beating against NHK it made the music off-pitch. Unfortunately, NHK is sticking with this
unfortunate situation in the new schedule reduced to 0500-0530 only, still on
6110 via Canada! Don`t they get any reception reports complaining of the QRM??
We have been wondering if World Interactive will survive the October 1 cuts, as
no English transmission will be longer than 30 minutes and some will be only 20
minutes. Apparently it will, because the YL & YL hosts were chatting, asking
for e-mail input, and next week`s program would include the regular World of
Haiku feature
** LAOS [non]. WHRI 11785, Sat Sept 29 around 1330 with that wonderful solo
singing, leaping an octave up and down, from Hmong Lao Radio. Later, into
rustic instrumental music with the barnyard background sounds. After OCS and
ID, at 1400 switched to Hmong World Christian Radio. Presumably for a semi-hour only; I keep missing the 1430 break, but at 1455 recheck WHRI was back to
gospel rock in English fill. Yes, as of Sept 29, WHR online schedule finally
shows HWCR both Sat & Sun 1400-1430 on 11785
** MADEIRA [non]. RDPI, 15560, best signal direct from Europe on 19m, Sunday
Sept 30 at 1354 with Abraço da Madeira show, interrupted briefly for QSY
announcement upcoming at hour top, 12020 to 11905; phone call from Canada, 1400 news break. This is for the diaspora from Madeira, which seems to be more than you would expect from such a small island, scheduled 1211-1400 on Sundays
** NIGERIA. 4770, awfully muffled and distorted talk, 0552 Sept 30; could not
be sure of the language. Are they trying to outdo VON?
** U S A. I have been noting lately zero reception from WBCQ 18910-CLSB,
especially when I check it Wednesdays 2300-2330 when WORLD OF RADIO is
scheduled. However, Friday Sept 28 at 2130 it was coming in well with gospel
rock, so propagation (or operation?) certainly does vary. Per WBCQ website
http://www.zappahead.net/wbcq/main.php?fn=sked&freq=18910 this frequency is
scheduled:
Sun 13-21
M-F 17-23 [Wed -2330 with WOR]
Sat 00-01 [AWWW]
Sat 17-22
Except as indicated, all gospel-huxters. Allan Weiner tells me he would like to
move this to 13 or 15 MHz band but can`t find any available frequency, since
OOB authorizations have been cut back following 9/11. Seems to me some ought to be possible for segments unlike fulltime on 7415
** U S A [and non]. WBOH, 5920, Sept 28 at 0520, usual gospel music, but
noticed there was a SAH varying from 0 to about 4 Hz; could not detect any
other audio, however, but this indicates another carrier was present. Nothing
else scheduled in the usual lists; but during Sept only, Kvitsoy, Norway is
scheduled in DRM at 0600-0700, 65 kW, 190 degrees. Possibly a warmup for that?
Then at 0530 WBOH went to talk from Sheldon Smith, Sword of the Lword, and
started splattering, bothering 5910 Marfil Estéreo which had no problem before
0530
7260 Sep 19 2300-
MNG: Mongolian R 2nd prgr, Ulaanbaatar. As reported already by Nagoya DXers, the 2nd prgr signs on nowadays at 2300. 1st prgr s/on heard as normally at 2200 on 4895, 4830 and LW 164, 209 and 227 kHz.

Got a little trop today on a business trip over to Rock Springs, WY. I
think one of my pushbuttons happened to be set to 95.7 by a previous owner
or something. Was punching around FM and when I hit 95.7 there was country
music there. Got about 2 minutes worth of clean audio including a nice ID
by the jock on the air saying "KEZJ 95.7" several times. KEZJ is in Twin
Falls, Idaho......roughly a jaunt of about 200 miles. Never ever picked up
a Twin Falls station here before.

Was messing around between bitch sessions about IBOC that made me
feel a lot better.
I used my Eton AN-03 antenna and remembered an old amplified cheap RS
antenna I had, a 20-280. I plugged that AN-03 into that RS antenna
and it works even better than the window frame antenna. This station
came in very weak but comes in pretty well with this setup into a DX440.
9985 WWCR Nashville, TN 1741 with the Alex Jones Show. Shift freq to
9975 at 1800.

Not the ham variety, but broadcast. I was listening this morning from 6:50-7:15 am Central/1150-1215 UTC and noted the following on an ICF-2010 and its whip
antenna:
3925 JAPAN Radio Nikkei was strong here throughout with Japanese talk by a man; signal peaked very nicely toward the end of the listening period.
3977 INDONESIA Radio Republik Indonesia outlet at Pantianak assumed the one here through some heavy ham QRM; music and language were definitely like the RRI outlets I used to hear all the time when I lived in California. It also had that characteristic muddy "Indo modulation." Despite being listed for 3976, this signal seemed to peak on 3977.
3985 CHINA Central People Broadcasting Station, listed as Geermu, alternating male/female talk in definite Chinese prior to 7:00 am/1200 UTC, possible radio
play? Male talk in Chinese afterwards, no sign of the Korean clandestine.
Locations derived from 2007 Passport to World Band Radio, one of four books----along with the Bible, Qu'ran, and Popular Mechanics Illustrated Guide to
Home Improvement---that I consider to be divinely inspired and therefore inerrant.
(editor – Jay Heyl)
This is the third in a series of articles intended to introduce everyone to the world of non-directional beacons (NDBs). So far we’ve covered signal formats, frequencies, offsets, and intervals. This time we’re going to start talking about techniques. This will carry over into future articles because technique is intertwined with the tools at your disposal.
Most NDBs in North America broadcast in fairly standard AM mode. The transmitters send out a carrier and a modulated single-tone signal at both an upper and lower offset from the carrier. There are some beacons that only broadcast one of the sidebands, but most send out both upper and lower.
Since this is a perfectly acceptable AM signal, it can be received by any AM radio that can tune the required frequency. As was mentioned in the last article, however, using AM mode can lead to a cacophony of signals and a great deal of confusion. It is entirely possible to tune to a single frequency and hear five or more distinct tones. Considering the width of most AM mode filters, you could actually hear ten, fifteen, maybe more.
If you’ve concluded that AM mode is not the preferred approach for beacons, you are correct. It can be used, and, if it’s all you have at your disposal, you should not let this deter you from chasing beacons. Just be aware that you are operating with a bit of a handicap and will be unlikely to match the kinds of logs you see from dedicated beacon hunters with specialized equipment. You can overcome this handicap to a great extent by pumping the audio into a computer and using some specialized software. More on this in the future.
Next best would be SSB mode. This will at least eliminate half the signals that could be cluttering up your reception. If you are dumping the audio into a computer and using software to graph the signals, SSB may actually be the preferred mode. If you’re using strictly your ears, SSB may still leave you with a lot of other signal clutter. With a typical SSB filter, if you zero beat the carrier of the target beacon you could well be hearing carriers at 1kHz and 2kHz offsets, along with various signals in close proximity to those carriers. Some signals may come in clear, but others may get lost in the mess.
When using your ears to listen for signals, CW mode is usually the best way to go. If your radio allows you to adjust the BFO, all the better. In CW mode you will be tuning to the offset of the signal from the nominal frequency. If the beacon is nominally on 361kHz with an offset of 1020Hz, you’ll tune to the neighborhood of 362.020kHz (or 359.980kHz if listening for the LSB portion) and listen for Morse code of the same frequency as the BFO setting.
Due to the way human hearing works, there are some benefits to using as low a BFO setting as you are comfortable with. The lower the tone, the easier it will be for your ear to distinguish between two signals that are close together. But you do need to be able to hear the tone, so pick a setting that generates a tone you can easily hear and listen to for long periods without ear fatigue. Find a carrier (use the MW band if you need to) and play with the BFO setting until you’ve found a setting you like. Be sure to use the same audio equipment you intend to use when listening for beacons. There can be huge differences between various speakers and headphones. A BFO setting of 600Hz may sound sharp and shrill though one set of headphones and be perfectly acceptable on another.
My first foray into the world of beacons was also my first real experience with CW mode. I had a vague notion of what the BFO control was, but it was mostly a mystery. In case some of you are in the same situation, here are a few words about BFO. A CW mode signal has no associated carrier. The radio must insert its own carrier in order to recover any audio from the received signal. The BFO is the offset from the tuned frequency at which the radio inserts that carrier.
In most cases the BFO simply controls the tone of the received signal. There are some subtleties, though, particularly if your radio allows you both positive and negative BFO settings. If you tune to the frequency of a carrier, changing the BFO setting will change the tone of the het produced by the carrier. If you have another carrier 1kHz higher and the BFO is set to insert the radio’s carrier on the high side of the tuned frequency, changing the BFO setting will cause one het tone to go higher and the other to go lower. If you set the BFO to exactly in the middle between the two carriers, both carriers will produce the same tone. If, however, you set the BFO on the low side of the tuned frequency, both carrier hets will rise and fall together with changes in the BFO.
Moving on from BFO, let’s talk filters. You will generally want to use the narrowest RF filter you have at your disposal. I had been using the 2.2kHz filter that came with my radio. Hets would appear on the nominal frequencies of my local beacons, but that was about it. When I added a 300Hz CW filter I started hearing hets on almost every 1kHz nominal frequency. At first I thought something was wrong. Eventually I realized I was hearing carriers from beacons much farther away than I’d ever heard before. Eliminating all the stuff on the fringes allowed the radio to recover far more signal in the region in which I was interested. Of course, the point isn’t to listen to hets, but what applies to signal recovery on hets also applies to the modulated signals that are the real target. So narrow is good when hunting beacons.
Narrow, however, can be both a blessing and a curse. Using my 300Hz filter I’m able to recover far more useable signal in that narrow range, but due to the close proximity of modulated beacon signals and carriers of neighboring beacons, I now have lots of signals right next to all those carrier hets I’m also receiving. I’ve solved one problem and created another. I can hear many more beacons, if only I can separate them from the carrier hets.
Next time we’ll get into how to deal with this situation when we start talking equipment.
The storms are starting to quiet down and loggings are picking up. The season is underway! Come join us here in the basement, hunting for di-dah-dits and other oddities below the broadcast band.
On to this month’s loggings…
Harry Helms – Smithville, TX
Sony ICF-2010/NQAB (Not Quite A Beverage)
4 September
Yesterday I completed
repairs on my NQAB (not quite a beverage) antenna, a 900-foot long wire mounted
atop the fence posts on one side of our horse pasture. It runs in a straight
line toward the ENE, and is currently not terminated. Because I don't have a few
hundred feet of spare coax laying around, I connect it to my receivers through a
Par Electronics 9:1 matching transformer at the 700-foot point of its run (this
is the closest point to my combination home office/DX
shack, which is in a building separate from my house).
Like all long, long wires, it has some odd directional characteristics, like a
pronounced lobe to the southeast. It is also a very quiet antenna, and that's
why I decided to give it a try on longwave last evening.
There were a lot of lightining static crashes, and most of what I heard was from
TX and adjacent states. But on 391 kHz at 8:19 pm Central I came across a
strange one---a beacon identifying as "TDDP" with a good signal.
Hmmm. . . . . . I recalled some beacons in Guatemala (like the one that was on
1613 kHz for years) use four-letter identifiers like broadcast stations, so
maybe that's what I had. I checked the
Navaids.com web site, but no go. I then went to Martin Francis's excellent
"DX Radio Pages" site and searched the "Beacons Heard in North America"
database. No go for a TDDP on 391 kHz. . . . . in fact, no listing for a TDDP at
all!
Double hmmm. . . . . maybe it was a beacon miskeying? I tried ZDP----no luck.
I decided to try parts of the identifier. No luck with TDD on 391, so I tried
DDP on 391. . . . . aha!! There is a DDP in San Juan, PR listed for 391, and the
notes for loggings of it said it used a dash before the identifier-----mystery
solved!
Last night encapsulates everything that keeps me interested in DXing----the
thrill of the chase, and then putting together the pieces to determine what I
was hearing and where it was located. It's something non-DXers can never
understand!
Chris Black – Cape Cod

A quick and dirty synopsis of TA activity from the Cape. I didn't even attempt to DX any even channels. WBZ was obliterating everything from 1015 to 1045 and isn't the best phasing candidate for me. I can usually get around the others, but I just didn't feel up for the fight tonight. Ironically, the TA channels immediately on either side of the IBOC blaster are usually better than you would think, although still require some phasing. It's the domestic channels at the next level out that really spew the hash. For them use the "non-intuitive sideband", the one closest to the IBOC frequency for best results.
153 ALGERIA poor
152 FRANCE excellent
189 ICELAND good
198 UK fair-good

234 LUXEMBOURG good
252 ALGERIA fair
20 September
I managed to nab LYQ-529 this morning at 0921 UTC with several nice clear IDs at a minus 1006. I had to phase null RVC Turks and Caicos. I also use the Steve Ratzlaff audio filter and it really makes a difference. By the time I thought to get it on Spectran, it was down in the noise.
I got inspired to do some DGPS, which I had not done much of lately. I set up the frequencies as a memory group in the WinRadio and then scanned them while running DSCdecoder. It seemed to work well, although beacon conditions generally were not good last night. This list is only 19 short of my "Master" log.
