ABDX membership has grown with several HF DXers joining. ABDX Nation is now 168 members. We anxiously look forward to see loggings from our newest members.
ABDX is STILL looking for those who would like to edit a section or send in a story for publication in the Journal. If you are interested, email listowner@americanbroadcastdx.com . I can only offer those who contribute by editing, free membership and accolades. Of course membership is free for all but the accolades are what makes the pay worth it all. Join Jay Heyl, Martin Foltz and me in producing the Journal!
Novembers CME was about LW and SW logs. We got a nice number of them this month even though the CME only lasted two weeks. There is a plethora of HF logs to peruse.
Christmas is coming soon and some of us who have been good boys and girls will be getting a nice new radio toy under the tree. That will be for you to tell us all about next month in the New Toys section of the Journal.
We enjoy seeing our members who have made it to the “Hall of Fame” for those of us with faces for radio! If you are a member and want to be in the Rogues Gallery, send your pix to webmaster@americanbroadcastdx.com.
Only submissions from ABDX members will be accepted unless the editor decides the information is so important that it should be added. The November CME Announcement
ABDX presents for the last two weeks in November, the "And Now For
Something Completely Different" CME.
For those of you who are adventurous enough to get away from staid
and stodgy MW we have something for you. Yeah, we will still take
your MW logs and we will still put them in the Journal if you can't
pull yourself away from MW with wild horses....
This CME focuses on HF [SW] and [LF] LW. This is the time of year
when you hear LF [LW] beacons from Europe and Asia with BROADCASTING
on it and also many beacons from far away. I am positive the LF DXers
will be glad to help you and might even find a Morse code chart
somewhere on the net to help you guys out when you hear beacons.
For HF [SW] Glenn Hauser has always given us many HF tips and a great
site on line, the Aoki site from Japan, and its even in English.

tremendous help to people like me who are still unfamiliar with the
world of HF. Remember, send HF logs in UTC. You can find UTC time by
tuning WWV on 2.5, 5, 10 or 15 MHz.

The December CME Announcement
ABDX presents the December "Heat up the house with DX" CME.
Every year in the cold and frigid month of December we always run
something that will warm your heart if not your house. Forget
stringing up lights outdoors and running up your electric bill and
not getting any DX for your money. ABDX wants you to go into the
garage or closet and get out that old tube radio and fire that one
up. You will get to heat your house, light it up with that beautiful
orange firebottle glow and get DX all at the same time.
Find that old 5 tube radio, Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, Zenith
Transoceanic, R390, big old console or even 6 tube job, blow off the
dust and see what you can hear. At the very least, you will get some
nice warm and mellow sounds to listen to while spinning the dials.
Christmas music is in the air and if you hear it, log it and send it
along! For the Jewish on the list, if you hear Channukah music, we
will be glad to take those logs as well. Let us know what you are
hearing for holiday music.

above, clear mention of "Western Tennessee" although Nashville is, of
course, in central Tennessee. I believe they are in English in the
day, Spanish at night (according to their website), and are affiliated
with shortwave station WWCR. My 500th US station.
Nov 3 0700 EDT 1160 WCCS Homer City PA, "The Voice of Indiana County",
local ads, ID "WCCS, Homer City". Not new but a nice ID for once
Although the K-index was zero last night, I didn't notice any TA's
(lots of local noise last night). But it wasn't a wasted effort. I
did get a new domestic- WBLO 790 in Thomasville, NC, "Sports Talk 790,

1660 WWRU NY New York City: Logged @ 1200 11/3 during a program
in Korean, and an ID at TOH "W W R U, New York," and back into Korean. Atop much closer WFNA-1660 Charlotte on my mini-beverage.

530 CUBA Heard R. Rebelde beneath local TIS-530. Switched back and
forth between 670 and 530. Rebelde-670 was in and out under WPMH Portsmouth. SS programming on 670 wasn't WWFE, so had to be Rebelde. Rebelde-530 not logged as no ID heard.

530 CUBA Radio Rebelde logged at 2000 11/19 at about same strength
as RVC. Quite a signal. This is the one of three Cubans I hear here at
noontime. First noted // Rebelde-670 at 1300. Someone thought this is Radio Musical, La Babana; But Rebelde transmitters are also used for jamming (Marti in this case)

I noticed the 1180 het missing late Saturday evening while casually tuning the band with an HQ-120, but don’t know how long it has been gone. A nightly Spectran check of 1181 since then shows no trace of a carrier.

Between 8:45 and 9PM Hawaii Standard Time. Minus 5 hours from Eastern.
570 KLAC Los Angeles...Heard LA commercial....pretty weak but it was there.
610 KEAR San Francisco...Heard Family Radio President Harold Camping....Good signal for about 2 min
850 KOA Denver...I think...pretty strong...Sports talk with Denver slant
1070 KNX Los Angeles...News.....Good signal
1160 KSL Salt Lake City.....Nightside Project Program....Faded in and out but it was KSL
All I had time for...will try to listen more in the next few days before returning to Utah. I hope to be able to catch some international stations.

CHRB, High River, Alberta 1140 @ 2159 CST Religious programming. My first log for this station.
CBW, Winnipeg, Manitoba 990 @ 2205 CST CBC News, Manitoba weather, back into network programming from Toronto.I seldom hear stations from the prairie provinces so this was fun to hear. From the lower 48
KRCN, Longmont Colorado, 1060 @ 2145 CST, with the end of an auto racing program (from Phoenix)then into country music.I've heard KRCN before but it was around dusk so I figured they were still on day power but this was
at least a couple of hours after sunset. Surely they were on night power by this time (only 111 watts). Or would they cheat?

KGOW, "1560 The Game" in Houston, with a golf show at 1830 CST. About an hour after sunset so they should be on night power of 100 watts.
Also on 1560, KOCY, Oklahoma City with Radio Disney.250 watts at night.

New log for me, although I've heard them for several years under local KBBW 1010 during my morning walk. This morning I nulled KBBW just before 7am and caught the ID. Radio Locator shows a nice symmetrical beam aimed my way with 50kw daytime power.

If this has been mentioned already, I apologize, but I don't recall seeing
it here yet.
My car's in the shop, so I took my mom's car. She had it on 1260, but
instead of the Classical music they've been playing, it was Neal Boortz.
Looks like they are now "News/Talk 1260, KGIL". The new lineup includes
Michael Jackson (no, not the "Gloved One"), Larry King Live, and Joy Brown.
From Michael Jackson's web page, it looks like the switch happened last week
(shows you how much I've been paying attention).
The call change to KGIL takes 1260 back to their heritage calls. I remember
mom listening to KGIL in the car when I was a kid.

I thought I would try to see if I could get KWKH into the log, so I set up for overnight recording on 1130. The results were disappointing. The only stations I was able to ID were KSDO and KQNA. I did not hear an ID from KRDU, though I did hear their 6:00 TOH ID in the car this morning. I guess the E-W bearing on the DX-398/RS Loop managed to null them reasonably well, though I sure wish I could have eliminated KSDO the same way.

5:15 UTC November 10 ; 1290 kc Unidentified with oldies format mixing at times with WRNI - NPR Radio in Rhode Island ( wondering if anyone else heard this one as it got my curiosity. Could be CFRW Winnipeg possibly but not definite as the usual fade outs occured at ID times
November 12 , 5:07 UTC - 1290 CFRW w/ oldies including BTO's -You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, w/ID and jingle .... checked their stream on web also to compare with signal on FRG-100.
Station # 37 logged in both Newfoundland and Alberta. Lived in Alberta for 48 years before moving here.
1:30 UTC Nov 15 - 1300 khz Unidentified w/ Bryan Adams song mentioned and what I thought was a 1300 CJME ID briefly then gone like the wind.... if it was Regina, Saskatchewan ...furthest west signal for non DX test station yet from here for me . Will keep watch on this frequency next few nights.
6:03 UTC Nov 15 - 1323 khz Voice of Russia World Service w/ news story in English about imports and exports of Slovenia and the Russian Federation, station id then followed by Focus On Asia program (not sure where this is relayed from ? ) Fair signal and then faded quickly (I'll try to add recording of it in files )
630 khz - November 16 23:46 UTC - Norway, NRK Vigra w/ norwegian and quite a few country rock songs in English and Norwegian, announcer made mention of Oslo and Vigra a time or two .... signal strong for while then gone

Checking a few things tonight, I don`t hear the 1181 carrier at 0415 UT November 5; I think it was also missing a night or two before. Is anyone hearing it at all any more? Will it forever remain an unsolved mystery as to exact location?
UNIDENTIFIED. 1181, 0740, Nov. 8 noted carrier back on, tho seemed less strong than previous logs Lends credence to theory it was temporarily offknocked, damaged by the tropstorm/hurricane thru DR/E Cuba, which is the DF area for this. Yes, I hear it too again, rather weakly at 0305 UT check Nov

1181 The Het was noted Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in casual "drive by" tuning as loud, if not louder, as back in September/October. It really tears up 1180 here.

I checked around 4 p.m. ADT and the dial was full of TAs - at times
some were very strong and clear. Several TAs on LW too.
On the HD-100, I even got WBZ to read out "WBZ" although no audio lock
and the blue light keeped flashing.
I figure the storm may have a bit to do with it too. The wind is
picking up and the rain is falling.

We had power, but it was flickering on and off. Receivers: Drake R8,
Collins R-390A, Sony 2010 for direction finding. Antennas: LF
Engineering M-601C and Select-a-tenna [SAT] for direction finding.
Here are some daytime catches - all times are in AST:
590 CKRS Jonquiere QC 8:30 a.m.
780 UNID playing A/C - CFDR was off the air, no doubt due to Noel and
the mystery station was very, very weak. Sony 2010 couldn't pick it
up nekkid - required the select-a-tenna. Got it weak with Drake R8
and Collins R-390A using LF eng. M-601C. Using the Sony 2010 SAT
combo, the direction appears to be the NW. Anybody know of a station
on 780 which plays adult compary [light rock] type music??? 9:50 a.m.
1040 CJMS Saint Constance QC playing fr lang folk tunes 8:50 a.m.
1060 WBIX Natick/Boston with a syndicated fishing show 8:55 a.m.a.m.
1150 UNID Fr. lang station but NOT parallel to 610 CHNC except for
top of the hour news. 9:00 a.m.
780 CFDR HRM [Halifax] NS 50KW day/15KW night still off the air as of
12:10 p.m. AST. Likely Noel related. The sole other Halifax NS AM
station, 920 CJCH, is on the air.

1181 "The Het" is coming in here tonight, but its pretty weak. About
the same strength as the 1179 TA het.

WPHT is putting a Constant, very listenable Grade B Signal into Abbeville, SC tonight. I've never heard it this listenable down here before.
WPHT sounds like what 1450 WCRS from Greenwood, 15 miles away would sound like if I was only 5 miles from their transmitter site

This frequency is a bit busy tonight.
In the matter of 30 seconds, I logged AM 1370 WGCL Bloomington, Indiana during a weather forecast and "NewsTalk 1370" WSPD Toldeo, Ohio during a liner going into a program.
I now have 1370 WCOA Pensacola, Florida in the midst of Kim Komando.
None of the signals were very good, but they popped up long enough to hear specific station liners/id's, etc

This afternoon, at 2:17 PM, while parked about 5 miles south of GSP ( Greenville's Airport) while my XYL was getting her flu shot...I heard : "More music....W-K-D-K " sung by a few ladies , into" Uncle Albert " by the Beatles, then into "Undun " byThe Guess Who . On the 2002 Isuzu Rodeo radio.......or is it the radio rodeo ?? If I had stayed longer , I may have heard the legendary Powell Way !! I tried for WABV in Abbeville , but nothing but slop from WDAB 1580 Travelers Rest, S.C. ..............WPCI 1490 Greenville, S.C. noted running IBOC again....at least daytime. Unknown about nighttime.

I'm in Detroit, and I caught them around 2355 Monday evening with Fox
Sports, and "The Ball: Where the Triad Comes For Sports." Only other
time I'd heard them was very faintly when they were carrying Nostalgia
as WIST a couple of years back, while local CKLW-800 was off the air.
Monday evening, though, they were fading in and out, ranging from Fair
peaks to no signal at all, with CKLW ACI nulled.

I was able to hear KWKH-1130's Country music under local WDFN last
night myself. Last time I managed to hear them in here was back in 2005
after Hurricane Katrina.

<ahem!> have a "history of..."
1260 WUFE GA Baxley - 11/10/07 1720 - University of Georgia Football. Weak signal fading in and out of the mix of stations on 1260. "AM 1260, WUFE".

I've listened to 530 for the past 2 nights. It's definitely been Rebelde that I've heard, not Radio Cadena Habana (like last Fall) or RVC from the T&C.
Given the "flexibility" (for lack of a better term) of the Cuban MW outlets, I would not doubt that some stations flip formats at night.

My local 1340 KJMU Sand Springs, OK first noted silent the last week of
October still silent today so am assuming it's "gone" at least for now.

Just logged WVLK 590 Lexington Kentucky which peaked out from under
local KLBJ. Had KLBJ nulled to silence and noticed English language

Both are in tonight with pretty good signals.

WCKY 1530 Cincinnati. First time in quite a while. We have a local
on 1530 with bad night signal. WCKY was in pretty good for a while.
KREF 1400 Norman Ok. Not bad for 1kw on this frequency. Pretty good
distance for the power on messy channel.
New loggings from Central Texas
KGAB 650 Orchard Valley Wyoming in WSM null. Weather and local
commericals with Cheyanne address into very clear KGAB ID. Just at
Austin sunset.892 miles
KFRM 550 Salina Kansas pretty good signal against strong KTSA until
KFRM disappeared at 5:15 power change. 615 miles
KXMO 1500 Merkle Tx. Very strong at times 3:30pm. 250watt station
190 miles away. Spanish.
KJIM 1500 Sherman Texas. decent during mid morning.
KHAL 1310 San Antonio. Pretty strong under KVET 1300 hash. Tuned to
1312 to get good copy.

WNAX 570 Yankton South Dakota. KLIF nulled. First logging from South
Dakota. 855 miles.

Need some help with station in Alabama on 810. Sounded like they
were signing on at about 7:15 eastern, complete with national
anthem. Talk about 'our southern heritage' and Alabama. ID heard as
Alabama 810 into Marty Robbins song.
I believe this is WCKA Jacksonville Alabama. Did not get call
letters.
The sign on is what is confusing. They are listed as 50KW day and
500 watt at night. I assume they run 24/7. Is the sign on done at
power change?
They are the only station listed on 810 in Alabama. Pretty sure it is
WCKA. Lightning crashes made it hard to catch everything.
Also logged KGAS 1590 Carthage Tx last night doing high school
football. Fun to hear local radio at it's most local.
WBT was in this morning with Charlotte Morning News. Not always the
easist catch here.

Expected religion heard on 800 to be station from Oklahoma City. Turned out to be TWR Bonaire. Very strong signal for about 15 minutes at 5:30 CST.
Radio Reloj heard on 1020. Have loggest this one on several
frequencies. The tones are hard to miss. The programming
is difficult to hear most of the time.
Tentative tonight on KJON 850 Carrolton Tx. Religious programming over KOA then gone fast about 5:45 CDT.
Heard Radio Disney on 1400 the other night. Unless I missed one, the only station on the NRC log listed as Disney on 1400 is WNEX Macon Ga. Does anyone know of another? Not in long enough to get TOH ID.

I also am hearing the 1181 het quite noticably on my car radio here in
northen New Mexico.
1610 XEUACH Mexico City, DF 11/10 2251 EE pop music. Very, very, very
weak. New!

Only TP being heard these days is JOUB-774 who is heard thru the noise anytime after midnight. Het on 828 but no audio. QRN obliterates the others. Listened at sunset the other night and can tell Willis it's about the same out here on the left coast.....1130--KRDU Dinuba being bashed & battered by IBOC (probably from KHTK-1140)..1140-KHTK-getting some minor IBOC hash from nextdoor (probably Los Angeles-1150)...1150-Los Angeles (whatever their calls are nowdays-log is in the other room) getting creamed by KSL IBOC....1160-KSL-also getting creamed by KLOK-1170 IBOC....KLOK-1170 being severely bothered by KSL-IBOC....1180-KERI-Wasco being almost covered by KLOK-1170 & KEX-1190 IBOC...1190-KDYA-Vallejo in strong. 1200-Monterey County station bothered somewhat by KEX IBOC......AM is a mess.

About 0620 PST (1420 UTC) turned the Drake on and got my usual chorus of
buzzes & whirrs etc. but in checking 774 found JOUB Akita with best
signal in quite awhile. Woman talking (sounded like a travelogue) in
English. Good solid audio. My QRN didn't allow much other audio except
quite weak 657 North Korea playing some instrumental music. Oddly they
were received better without the filters. Tried 828-good solid het on
KNCO-830 but no audio found. Many, many other hets on low end of dial
as well. 594 covered by weird loud noise. 747 had good het but
KCBS-740 splattered muchly. Good hets on 702 & 711.
Tried JOUB again just before 1500 UTC but pretty much all gone by then
as it was quite bright outside.
As one can see the QRN takes a lot of the zest out of dxing here. Much
prefer 'Master of Orion'.

Hi gang. As I mentioned I had a 200 mile trip home from Pinedale, Wyoming last night and did some major DXing on the way home. I sat for over an hour listening to a station playing oldies on 1550. I confirmed it’s Jones Radio Networks’ “Good Time Oldies” satellite format. I heard “Dave’s Diner” and this is something that network runs at night…..double-confirmed it with 1370 KXTL in Butte, MT. They run the same network and the programming was the same so that’s about the only hint I had. The station was fair to weak mixing with a talk station…not sure who the talk was either. I know Albuquerque used to be more of a light hits/standards last I heard….did they maybe switch formats and are running oldies now? Every time it would come time for an ID or liner or something it would fade. Listened at TOH and all I got was a “1550” that came through and a “Good Times and Great Oldies”…..but no call sign. Any idea who this might be?

3230 UNID 11/19 UTC (11/18 Central). Alerted by the report of The Crystal Ship pirate on 3240 in Glenn Hauser's latest DXLD, I checked last night from about
0215 to 0250 UTC. Nothing was on 3240, but "something" was on this frequency. Very weak signal, but definitely AM although too week to hold a lock with
synchro detection. Seemed to be random talk between two men and had a "pirate radio" feel to it. Around 0235 the signal faded up enough to clearly hear
"hello. . . . hello, hello. . . . . h-h-h-e-e-e-l-l-l-l-o-o-o-o" by a man, as if they were
testing their transmitter modulation using a 'scope. Signal faded to flutter a few times before being totally lost by 0240. I suspect this was a pirate station testing, although an AM military transmitter (are there any still around?) could be a possibility.
3240 SWAZILAND Trans World Radio, beautiful interval signal interspersed with "This is Trans World Radio" by man 0257 11/19. Not very strong, but no QRM.
15000 WWVH, Kauai, Hawaii, totally atop WWV during checks 2045-2245 11/18 while operating the ARRL phone sweepstakes. Odd propagation; this is normally
observed here only around sunset in Fort Collins.
I used the ICF-2010 and whip for all receptions but 15000, where I used a Yaesu FT-817 and an end fed Hertz for 20 meters installed as a sloper to the east.

15345- RAE Argentina, 1830-1845 UT, English, with IDs and dull talk

Argentine music bridges were more interesting. Poor audio made copy
difficult (reminded me of listening to Radio Moscow during their salad
days), plus annoying het and flutter, but good signal, especially on
my cheapo Radio Shack DX-375 with just the whip antenna.

1845 UT on Nov 28 9445- All India Radio in English, low audio with
non-descript talk, but got good ID about "You are listening to the
general overseas service of All India Radio". Good signal.
1850 UT on Nov 28, 15120, VO Nigeria, English, presumed the one here.
I say "presumed" thanks to the big splatter from WYFR on 15115 which
made copy tough. Heard African accented English, African-style vocals
and mentions on Nigeria at 1859 but never caught the ID, but was
probably them.

Shortwave sounds really good on a R-392 fed through computer speakers
and a subwoofer. And the MW only M-601C seems to work rather nicely on

** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, 6110, 0130 English to NAm, fair with no jamming Nov 2 at 0139; main interference was not from 6115 or 6105, but from 6100, Sackville in Spanish splatter, aimed our way at 240 degrees
** CHINA [non]. CRI is beside itself now in the 1200 Chinese hour, as noted Nov
3 at 1257: on 9560 via Sackville, and after a few syllables of satellite delay,
on 9570 via Habana. After 1300, the latter continues in English, as the
Sackville relay for B-07 is on 11885 instead of 9650. Perhaps China was
uncomfortable being sandwiched between two KBSWR South Korean relays on 9650 until 1300 and after 1400?
** ECUADOR. HCJB`s long-obsolete frequency announcements in Spanish have
survived yet another seasonal transition into B-07! Nov 2 at 1314 on 11960, the
same old recording claimed they were on 11760 and 9745, while in fact they have been for years and continue to be on 11690 and 11960
** GUATEMALA. R. Truth, Chiquimula, in a band of its own, 4052.5, Nov 3 at 0520 with spiritual ``Nobody knows the trouble I`ve Seen``, 0522 preacher in
English with Spanish accent (Amílcar himself?), and shortly into contrasting
sacred music, Handel? The 0500-0600* hour is in English
** MEXICO. XEYU, 9599.3, Nov 1 around 0630, good with classical music, but gone again at recheck 1300. Just before 1300 I was hearing no het on Cuba, so
figured UNAM had vanished. Nor was it audible around 0140 UT Nov 2, altho the
MUF may have dipped too low by then. Still missing around 0530 and 1330 too.
After barely 24 hours back on the air, XEYU 9599.3v remains silent as of Nov 3.
In checking the frequency, I found RHC on 9600 until 0459 Nov 3 with a song
about Habana, // 9550 which continued in Spanish. So it would be pointless for
XEYU to broadcast before 0500 anyway. At 0507 I found 9600 occupied by
something in an African language. That`s VOA Botswana in Hausa until 0530.
After that, 9600 should be clear for a while, altho there are various other
broadcasters scheduled during the 24 hours, including more from Cuba in the
mornings, 1100-1300, as well as 0000-0500 (Sunday 2330- with Esperanto), per
RHC website, which must always be viewed skeptically. Since XEYU is not
frequency-agile --- except for slight variations --- it would be charitable if
RHC were to cede 9600 to XEYU, but you could hardly expect them to if Radio
UNAM is not really committed to daily broadcasting
** NEW ZEALAND [and non]. RNZI`s latest schedule change to 9870 for DRM at
0659-1258 is bad news for Vividh Bharati Service from India, and those who
would listen to it, which a few weeks earlier moved to 9870. Nov 1 at 1250
there was no trace of VBS here under the DRM noise, and at 1254 there was also QRDRM to something on 9865. DRM went off at 1259* revealing 9870 VBS and 9865 VOR IS. May we expect yet another abrupt QSY by NZ to resolve this situation?
** POLAND [non]. PRES, 9450 via Wertachtal for English at 1300 may make it to
ENAm, but not to CNAm; Nov 1 at 1301 I could hear only a trace of a signal on
this frequency. And no better Nov 2. Of course, if Warsaw cared about being
heard in NAm, they would use some of their time on Guiana French for that
instead of beaming Polish back to Europe --- or use Wertachtal at a suitable
time and frequency for NAm, like VOR does now on 6155 at 0300
** SPAIN [non]. REE via Costa Rica really has some interference problems now:
Besides Vatican collision on 5965 after 0400 as previously noted, Nov 3 at
0512, it had severe ACI from CRI English on 5960 via Sackville; CRI is on here
from before 0400 until 0600. REE`s 9675 had even more severe QRM at 0508 from WYFR on 9680 with CBS Taiwan in Cantonese. This is aimed right at us, 315 degrees from Okeechobee (and equally ruins Channel Africa on 9685, English hour at 0500). Even REE 3350 had problems, at 0523, intermittent ``running water`` utility QRM. None of this would be quite so bad if REE had any punch in its modulation, but all its Cariari frequencies are very undermodulated and lo-fi, compared to Noblejas
** THAILAND. R. Thailand`s best chance to be heard here during English seems
not to be the new NAm service direct in the evenings --- are we too far west
for the ENAm service and too far east for the WNAm service to make it? --- but
the 1230 UT broadcast on 9810 to SEAsia/Australia which happens to be on a
clear frequency. Nov 1 at 1258 check, 9810 was poor with flutter, and adjacent
to Cuban jamming against nothing on 9805, that being a residual until provoked
by Martí, and not as full-force as it would otherwise be. The 1400 R. Thailand
broadcast on 9725 doesn`t have a chance unless Costa Rica be off
** TURKEY. VOT, 15350, Turkish music, and not much talk, most enjoyable around 1330 Nov 2. Now during that hour we have a music choice of Turkey 15350, Solh 15265, Saudi Arabia 15380. Too, 15350 had a much better signal than VOT`s English service opening at 1330, which this date was poor on 12035, inaudible on 11735. 15350 is scheduled 0800-1400, 294 degrees.
Now instead of R. Solh on 17700, we hear Die Stimme der Türkei, until 1325 or
so Nov 3. Perhaps I just missed their 14-dayish DX Programm on Samstags. Much better reception for this than we get in English from 1330 on 12035, 11735.
Besides 1230, the other German broadcast from VOT is at 1830 on 7205 per ADDX
** U K [non]. Altho it doesn`t always appear on the BBCWS online skeds for W
Africa, 7160 via Ascension at 0300-0600 provides good reception here. Among the non-African programs it provides are: Sat 0332 Discovery, 0430 The Interview; Sun 0332 Instant Guide & Over to You, 0532 Reporting Religion
** U S A. Just after I publicized 15580 as excellent new frequency for VOA`s
music hour at 2100, it`s gone, Nov 1 at 2105 check. Not a trace. Left a
receiver on frequency, and carrier finally came on at 2131:30, but off and on a

trouble keeping those old transmitters going at Greenville, but more schedule
changes are in store next week.
Somewhat surprised to encounter VOA news in English at 0138 on 7200, so not to the Americas, and not Special. This hour from Morocco is scheduled to cover
Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and all the countries in between. But nor
after March! IBB announced Nov 2 that the Morocco site would be closed, and
returned to the Moroccan government
** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, 13640, new English to NAm at 1530-1600, best heard yet
on Nov 5 at 1529 with IS, 1530 opening with usual schedule, S9+15 or 34443, but fighting my local line noise. Modulation still needs more punch. Not bothered
by a weak adjacent on 13635, presumably CVC Darwin in English
** AUSTRALIA [non]. Again hearing motorboating/buzz, defective transmitter
underneath RA on 6020, Nov 5 at 1348. Per Aoki B-07, the only other station on
6020 at that hour would be Hanoi, Vietnam; is that it?
** COSTA RICA. In connexion with the REE Cariari spurs around 17595 and 18105 from the 17850 transmitter, which persisted for a few weeks in Sept/Oct, I
recently remarked that 17850 would be replaced by 15125 in B-07. I am not sure
how I concluded this, but the REE B-07 schedules we see now certainly show both in use. The one via José Bueno, for the CR relays only in the daytime, as
reworked by Alan Roe:

Sounded like it came from a DRM press release; nothing about its drawbacks. Also outdated, as he said HCJB was the only Latin American station doing DRM, unaware of Bonaire, Chile and Guiana French (and HCJB is only doing it in German to Europe, currently). Also said that propagation would start improving from the middle of this year with the sunspot cycle rising.
Wrong again; ask Arnie, who used to contribute a propagation segment for this
show but is no longer to be heard on it; I wonder why?
** CUBA. It is notable that no more jamming is heard on 11845, only a week
after R. Martí vacated, as checked Nov 5 at 1523. Word must have finally got
around the DCJC network to pile on 15330 instead
** CUBA. Cut numbers on pure CW, 7520, Nov 5 at 1331, presumably spy message from here
** GABON [and non]. AN1, 17630, Nov 5 at 1411 had some weaker co-channel in English, no doubt CRI via Mali aimed eastward. This collision has been going on for years, and must be much worse in Africa. Perhaps the Chinese do not realize Gabon is there, not being registered with HFCC (only R. Japan relays appear). When the 17630 Gabon signal is good, I look for the harmonic on 19160, but no luck so far this season
** GUIANA FRENCH. The unreliable DRM broadcast from TDF on 17870-17875-17880 was much weaker than usual, Monday Nov 5 at 1442. Africa and Europe were propagating OK, so strange that GUF would not. Power reduxion or beam change?
** INDIA. AIR VBS, 9870, Nov 5 at 1336, fair signal with fast SAH, or was it
just polar flutter? Xi`an China might be co-channel. Enjoyed the VBS music on
and off during the next hour. AIR GOS in English, OTOH, was inaudible on 9690
** INDONESIA. Don`t usually have much luck with VOI when it is on 11785 instead of 9525, but Nov 5 at 1353, lacking WHRI since it is a weekday, could hear weak
Korean talk which must be VOI as scheduled, also low het with something else,
because VOI is habitually off-frequency, about 11784.9. At 1554 recheck, could
hear the VOI gamelan band & English ID routine which they run during this
semihour, but no comparison to the nice signal they used to have on 9525
** INTERNATIONAL VACUUM [non]. Shuttle Discovery communications relay on SSB at 0710 Nov 5. I was falling asleep, but thought I heard some music included, jeopardizing the ham license of Goddard SFC`s WA3NAN, Greenbelt MD, which this must have been as I was tuned to about 7183. I was also too tired to measure the frequency, but that`s about where the FRG-7 was parked when I turned it on the next morning. WA3NAN lists 7185 as one of its shuttle audio relay frequencies at http://www.amsat.org/amsat/sarex/shutfreq.html
** JORDAN. R. Jordan seems to have replaced some of its English hours on 11690 with French. Nov 5 at 1524, well after HCJB was off, but as always with RTTY on the low side, I found pop music in French, and at 1526 an announcement in French. Again at 1538 when splatter from Venezuela/Cuba 11680 was also a problem. When there were lyrics to the music, they were in French, such as at 1556. Then at 1600 theme music, presumed ID but fade, and into rock music in English, which went on to 1607 when an announcement said ``You are listening to ---, new sound``. I never got a definite ID for Jordan in either language, but don`t see how it could be anything else.
For B-07 RJ is scheduled on 11690 at 1400-1730 to Eu and 48-USA plus Atlantic
Canada. WRTH 2007 shows RJ has a French service on FM 90.0 until 1600, which they are now apparently duplicating on SW until that hour, leaving only one
sesquihour of English. Or was it a mistake? Further monitoring needed
** KUWAIT. R. Kuwait is still in English on 11990. Finally caught the tail end
of the 18-21 transmission, Nov 3 at 2057 tune-in with Madonna tune to disco
beat. 2058 sign-off announcement giving English schedule, also at ``8 AM`` and
on FM. 2059 brief NA. 2100 5+1 timesignal, news theme, and YL news in Arabic.
Finally cut off abruptly at 2106* SINPO 34343, deep fades
** LAOS [non]. Confirmed on the first day of standard time in Indiana, that
Hmong Lao Radio has shifted one UT hour later on WHRI, still on 11785 but at
1400-1500 Sunday Nov 4, followed by Hmong World Christian Radio at 1500. Both should also apply to Saturdays. BTW, DXing with Cumbre was also on 11785 before 1400. Then checking http://www.whr.org repeatedly on Nov 4 to get an updated DWC schedule, I found it was down. Guess they are taking a while to get all the times changed? No, it`s back up Nov 5 but ET/UT times are STILL shown as 4 hours apart instead of 5! Worse than useless
** MADEIRA [non]. ``Abraço da Madeira`` show on RDPI, 15560, during the 1405 UT Sunday hour Nov 4, excellent reception. Pause for news on the semihour. This show is on the schedule at

Madeira, BTW, stays on the same time as Portugal, unlike Açores, which is one
hour behind but also shifting DST-wise, UT -1 winter, UT summer, per WRTH 2007
** MEXICO. XEYU was still missing when I patrolled 31m around 1330 UT Nov 5,
but next time I crossed the frequency, at 1447, it was back on with discussion
in Spanish. Frequency had ascended more than halfway from 9599 to 9600, as with BFO on, stepping back and forth 1 kHz on the YB-400, the pitch was slightly
lower on 9600 than on 9599, so it would be around 9599.55
** SPAIN. REE now has a classical music show, ``Clásicos Populares``, M-F for
55 minutes during the 14 UT hour, which I came across Nov 5 at 1412 on 17595
with its usual good signal and audio, also // barely audible 21570 and 21610.
Nothing very deep here, as the title implies, and they spend too much time
talking with artists; heard some Goldberg Variations in two different segments,
Mozart. Interrupted show abruptly at 1455 for frequency change announcement:
Africa from 21540 to 17755 about to happen, and goodbye to NAm until 1900 on
9630. But 17595 continued on air with no break, and no perceptible reduxion in
signal as they welcomed C&SAm listeners instead. What supposedly happens at
1500 is that a second Noblejas 250 kW transmitter at 302 degrees goes off,
while another one at 248 degrees keeps running. BTW, the program grid effective Oct 29 at

is marked HOE at the top, which means Hora Oficial Española, UT +1
** TURKEY. VOT was much better, tho only fair, on 12035, than on 11735, Nov 5

truncated version of their IS, which always annoys me, just chopping it off;
one complete iteration of it would not take much time. Then Turkish music
interlude. At 1407 noticed 12035 transmitter was cutting off the air and back

14-15 UT hour from BBCWS to Africa, one can do so in North America via

Making a periodic check trying to confirm WOR on WBCQ 9330, UT Monday Nov 5 at 0415, nothing audible on that frequency, probably above MUF if it is on; checked 7415, and since I was already in LSB mode on the DX-398, found reduced audio there, while there was quite a bit more audio on the USB, so 7415 is sort of CUSB. Nothing audible on 5110 either. By 0515, 7415 had almost faded out too and I could barely recognize my own voice, which, BTW, had to arrive at WBCQ yet again by phone feed since they had lost the recording/file of the latest show and were about to play the previous one as they already had at 0400; same thing happened the week before. Just before 0515, Ed Bolton was singing! Instead of making his usual desperate pitch for contributions following Amos & Andy
** U S A. WWCR mixing product on 5980, Nov 5 at 0656, Pastor Pete Peters and
Doctor Gene Scott together, with 5890 leaping over 5935. Both fundamentals were extremely strong, S9+20 while 5980 was S9+15. Heard on two receivers. Not heard on the opposite side, 5845, perhaps obscured by 5850 WEWN. At 0701 PPP began another hour, identified as originally broadcast on 11/21/06. R. Martí is supposed to start at 0700 on 5980, but neither it nor DentroCuban jamming could be heard immediately under WWCR
** U S A. As suspected, with WEWN running two 500 kW transmitters only 20 kHz apart, leapfrog mixing product found on 11510, Nov 5 at 1520. That`s 11550, the squealy transmitter in Spanish, over 11530 in English. Could not detect a match on 11570, however, perhaps obscured by WYFR 11565. Spur on 11510 impossiblizes reception here of VOA Sri Lanka in English, despite coincidentally favorable azimuth of 340 degrees
** U S A. Made a point of monitoring VOA`s new weekday broadcast at 1400-1415 on 11840, 17595, on its first day, Nov 5. Tuned in early to 11840 and nothing there until about 5 seconds after 1400 when cut on with brief open carrier, and then joining Spanish program already in progress, which turns out to be from the Voasat network, ``Deportivo Internacional``, which was announced as a new program itself, altho nothing said about the SW frequencies! Announcer doesn`t understand time conversion as he said it was lunes a viernes 9-9:15 hora de Wáshington, 1300 hora universal, but of course that is now equivalent to 1400! Could not listen to this silly ballgame nonsense straight thru, but then
checked 17565 and found it equally strong, and came back before closing. Last
item was about a team named the Lakers. In Spanish, one might wonder if it has
anything to do with lagos? One thing Los Ángeles is not known for, is lakes.
Looking at my Rand McNally, all one finds are little reservoirs scattered here
and there, implying they are artificial, and no real natural lakes. At 1414,
Freddy Silva was wrapping it up, with forced enthusiasm and constant frenetic
musical bed. Stopped at 1414:30, and after a pause, standard VOA sign-off in
English. So now we know the purpose of the new 1400-1415 M-F VOA broadcast, but why?
** VENEZUELA [non]. ``Aló, Presidente``, via Cuba quickly checked Sunday Nov 4 at 1514, found 17750 & 13750 synchronized; 11875 & 11670 an echo apart from the other two
** CUBA. RHC spur on 15500, weak and intermittent, Nov 6 at 1455, no doubt from the very large signal on 15370
** JORDAN. Checking R. Jordan again Nov 6 on 11690 for French replacing
English: 1424 tune-in, French announcement but mostly music, atop HCJB with SAH of 4+ Hz. 1431 talk feature; 1436 ID tentatively as ``Radio Francophone
Jordanie`` but not sure of last word. High-energy music with disco beat, YL DJ,
who also did the news headlines at 1500, back to music before 1502; 1532
recheck, still in French. A timesignal at 1500 must have been the sign-off of
HCJB. Throughout, the usual RTTY QRM on the low side, avoided as much as
possible.
Then Noel Green reported that the French and English departments were
temporarily having to share a studio, accounting for the changes
** MALI [and non]. CRI English on 17630, Nov 6 at 1451 was mixing with Africa
Numéro Un, Gabon, with CRI mostly atop for a change
** MEXICO. XEYU, 9599.5v, was certainly on the air Nov 5 at 2312, causing a big het to Vatican Radio, 9600.0, closing English. Axually, Vatican is supposed to
be on 9600 from SMG only at 2315-2400 in Vietnamese. They must have turned it on early
** SPAIN. REE, 17595, 1455 Nov 6 with usual interruption to programming for
unnecessarily lengthy frequency change announcement. Unlike the day before,
there was no signal on 17595 from 1458 to 1502, so not only the NAm transmitter went off, but so did the C&SAm transmitter (or it was already off) until return at 1502. Meanwhile, // programming on 15585 continued, but too weak to be of use here
** SWEDEN. R. Sweden theme music on 11820, Nov 6 at 1428 and off a minute later without announcement. I assumed this was coincidental, some other station
playing that music, but checking schedule I see R. Sweden is now scheduled here only at 1400-1430 via Hörby, 95 degrees to ME/SAs
** U S A [and non]. VOA Creole confirmed at one-hour-later-shifted-time of
2200-2230 UT, as heard at 2223 on 11895 // 13725. I believe Haiti is the only
country that gets this treatment among VOA`s language services. Of course most
of the European languages, where DST is a major factor, have been cancelled.
VOA World News Now coming in well on 9490, before and after 2300 UT Nov 5 ---that`s Tinang, Philippines at 200 degrees. String of frequencies announced also
included 5910. That`s 2200-2400, 50 kW at 283 degrees from Tinang-2, whose
coordinates are one minute further east than the main Tinang-1 site. Altho from
Nov 7, Greenville is also scheduled on 5910 at exactly the same time.
Début of VOA`s new 15-minute weekday report in Spanish, ``Crónica del Día``
monitored Monday November 5 at 2302 tune-in on 5890, giving time as ``6 pm en Wáshington, 11 de la mañana, Tiempo Universal`` --- I`ve explained to them that they should use the 24 hour system with UT, and avoid such confusion. But where is the // 9885? Nothing there until it popped on at 2306. Wake up in
Greenville! Axually they were probably scrambling to get a transmitter retuned
and antennas switched, not enough time allowed for the process. Like the
morning sports show, which was plugged at 2307 without any specific tuning
info, this one has a continuous urgent repetitive musical bed, which I find
distracting and insulting, as if words are not enough to convey news. Basically
headlines, squeezing as much as possible into the time, including stox. Outro
at 2313 identified announcers as Mercedes Antezana and Hernán Suárez. These are primarily VOASat programs with SW added as an afterthought
** VATICAN [and non]. XEYU, 9599.5v, Nov 5 at 2312, causing a big het to
Vatican Radio, 9600.0, closing English. Axually, Vatican is supposed to be on
9600 from SMG only at 2315-2400 in Vietnamese. They must have turned it on
early.
BTW, per VR engineering sked via Wolfgang Büschel, if you hear it on 9600
during the previous hour in Chinese, 2200-2245, it`s currently 120 kW, 218
degrees from Khabarovsk, but from Dec 2 to Feb 2 it will be instead 250 kW, 263
degrees from Petropalovsk, then back to Khabarovsk from Feb 3 to March 29
** ALBANIA. Anomalies monitored from R. Tirana: Nov 7 at 1528, on 13640,
carrier at S9+15. No modulation until 1531:45, music joined in progress, wrong
program? 1532:15 cut to English opening with schedule; program summary
including European Integration show, which is for Wednesday.
Nov 7 at 2106, 9915 just barely audible (but I have a high local noise level on
this band), while audible better on // 7430 intended for Europe --- however,
not in English but Albanian, news!
Nov 8 at 0350 on 6110, continuous vocal rock music, no announcements heard, not even at sign off. Music and carrier ran until 0401* overlapping BBC Arabic
which came on between 0359 and 0400, heavy sub-audible heterodyne
** CUBA. RHC, 6060, Nov 7 at 0624 in English, low modulation and very
distorted, audible only at peaks. Meanwhile, // 6000 was OK, as was 6180, very
loud as usual tho with some distortion
** GUIANA FRENCH. TDF DRM test remains weaker than before, and center has shifted down 5 kHz, so now it covers 17865-17870-17875, Nov 8 at 1455. Kai Ludwig found a German posting that indeed they have redirected the beam toward Europe instead of NAm:

Internacional; good signal, only lite het at the moment. This is on the R. UNAM
(AM) schedule at 7:30 am, lasting less than a semihour, followed by music to
hourtop when AM & FM simulcast
** SOUTH AFRICA. 17860, Channel Africa IDs and IS, which includes chirps of the old bokmakierie as in Radio RSA days, Nov 8 at 1456 preceding Swahili service, poor. After timesignal at 1500, I switched to 17770 where the English service was better. There shouldn`t be that much difference, as 17860 is 250 kW at 19 degrees while 17770 is 500 kW at 20 degrees
** SPAIN. The gimmick on Clásicos Populares from REE in the 1400 UT hour
weekdays, best on 17595 seems to be listener participation, rating various
pieces of music, or choosing which performance is best. Nov 7 at 1430 they were
playing the fourth performance in a row of the same aria; next day, when some
distortion marred the signal, there were different intermezzi the audience was
supposed to rate
** SRI LANKA. I feared that the WEWN mixing product on 11510 would totally
block VOA during Border Crossings in the 1500 UT hour, as it did when first
noted; but Nov 7 at 1524, it only partially blocked, as VOA was audible mixing.
VOA 9760 via Philippines is always much better but with separate Special
English programming
** SUDAN [non]. English lessons frequently punxuated by doorbells (as in
American usage), Nov 8 at 1410, on 15675, Southern Sudan Interactive Radio
Instruction; see my report in 7-122 when it was on 15650.

actually something else? 15390 is scheduled daily, Merlin/VTC broker. However,
SSIRI is known to use a variety of different transmitter sites, also UAE
** U S A. BBCWS relay, 11675, axually on the air early, rather than late! Nov 7
at 2048 found the open carrier already on, and at 2058 B-B-C- chimes. This
means Greenville is no longer using one of the same transmitters as for Hausa
at 2030-2100, without sufficient time to return, now scheduled on 9815 and
15185 M-F.
VOA Music Mix, 15580 Greenville, Nov 7 at 2105 starting Classic Rock show, on
Thursdays. This time the transmitter was on the air before 2130. Keep it up
** U S A. WBCQ 7415 I found to have suppressed lowersideband, instead of usual DSB, November 5 around 0415, and still the case Nov 8 around 0345. Will Martin heard this explained on the Lumpy Gravy show: the regular 7415 transmitter is down for repairs, so the 5110-CUSB transmitter has been retuned to 7415. I assume this means 5110 is currently not on the air at all, and the signal on 7415 is probably not as strong as usual
** U S A. AFN, 7811-USB (did not measure exactly), Nov 7 at 0636 with report
from Pentagon Channel, but audio cutting out; same problem in next item, a
medical report. If it were not for such problems, AFRTS would be very useful in
aggregating all these little features from various networks, removing
commercials, and running them one after another
** ZANZIBAR. RTZ, 11735, Nov 7 at 2051 with local music, 2055 devotional in
Arabic, 2059 brief YL sign-off, NA lasting only half a sesquiminute, and off.
This seems like one of the most exotic places we can hear on SW without much
difficulty
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. Radio Solh, 15265 via Rampisham UK, still with sticking
CD at 1346-1350, but during the following hour has changed the playlist. Nov 9
at 1420 a bilingual song, lyrix in English by a woman, including ``my heart
throbs`` and ``you be my only one``, anyone recognize that? But other verses by
M in Pashto(?)
** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, 13640, Nov 10 began programming slightly early at
1529:40. I think it would be better to hold the announcement of the complete
English schedule for the end of each broadcast rather than delay the beginning,
when just the current frequency or frequencies in use should be given. It`s
certainly better than never giving SW frequencies like some SW stations, or
never giving them for the transmission in progress, like Radio Japan.
6110: when open carrier came on about 0326 Nov 11, successfully mashing down noise and QRM on frequency, I was expecting easy listening from RT; but 0330 theme, opening with full English schedule, were very lowly modulated, compared to neighboring stations, and even more so compared to that guy on the always heavily modulated 5070 at the same time
** ANTARCTICA. Friday Nov 9 was another good day for LRA-36. I was about to go out and didn`t have time to stay with it, but there was music audible on 15476,
not 15475, at 2052, a few minutes before scheduled closing
** ARGENTINA [and non]. After logging Antarctica, I checked to see how well
15345 was incoming, Nov 9 at 2054. Tango music, and announcement in French, so must have been RAE, but at first I thought there was a subaudible heterodyne, unlikely for RAE to be that close to nominal frequency to beat against Morocco! Instead it must have been propagational flutter. The REE service to troops in ME, 1900-2200 is supposed to be back on 12035 as it was last B, ex-15345 in A season, as yet unconfirmed here. Nothing audible on the 13363 feeder at this time
** BIAFRA [non]. V. of Biafra International via WHRI, reconfirmed at same hour
now as in A-07, Friday Nov 9 at 2053 on 15665 with diatribe about how Biafra
deserves diplomatic recognition, so still at 2000-2100. The apparently spurious
and never confirmed additional broadcast on Wednesdays at 1915-1945 on 13710 has now been removed from the WHR online schedule when searched on VOBI
** CUBA [and non]. Lately I have suspected jamming on 5955, obviously against
R. República`s latest but weak frequency 5954.1. It`s hard to pull out from the
sideband splatter caused by WYFR 5950 and Sackville 5960, but I am now pretty
certain I am hearing separate grinding. At 0302 Nov 11, could not even detect a
carrier on 5954; if heard at all, that`s better here a few hours earlier.
RHC, 6140, before 0300 UT Nov 11 was quite strong and // 9600. At 0306 recheck I was hearing something else in Spanish on 6140. At first I thought it might be the Rebelde or Progreso network, but 0315 a bit of `skylark` music reminded me that R. Romania Internacional is scheduled here in Spanish; still mixing with weaker RHC, taking turns dominating

English, good signal and surprised it was without WHRI QRM, since WHRI is
scheduled on 7315 during this hour daily. Perhaps RFI persuaded them to move
and the change has not yet been made to the WHR website schedule. Not on 7335 either, whew! Yes, the newscaster`s style reeked of unenthusiasm, unconcern which is what the French root means, originally from Latin, lacking warmth, says Merriam-Webster
** LIBYA. Openings on 13m can be unexpectedly selective. Nov 10 at 1451, 21695 was not only much better than // 17725, but the best signal on 21 MHz, rivaled only by BBC Ascension 21470. Less hum than usual, too. English talk about Allah, ID as V. of Africa from the Great Jamahiriyah, then for our dear
listeners, a talk in a series about African countries, Mauritius, going into
its basic geographical facts, 1455 languages spoken there, etc. Someone else
reported VOA feature on Mauritius recently, which makes me suspect they recycle the same programming several times, as previously noted with items on Martin Luther King, etc. BTW, Dave Kenny in BDXC-UK observes that VOA is no longer doing short English newscasts at various times, so it seems for English, this bihour is it
** MEXICO [and non]. XEYU, Radio Unam observations: Nov 9 at 0615 and 1345 good with classical music on 9599+. Still irregular; Nov 11 before 0300, only RHC was heard on 9600, but at 0314 recheck both were on with a big het. Narrowest bandwidth and side tuning could almost get rid of one or the other
** SAUDI ARABIA. 15380, Nov 9 at 1353, all I could make out was a big buzz on a weak signal aside Cuban 15370 monster. I can only assume 15380 was the Buzzing Service of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as scheduled here, 500 kW from Riyadh, 310 degrees toward NAm at 1200-1400
** SPAIN. REE, 17595: on Saturday Nov 10 we were spared an interruption at 1455 on 17595 to announce changes in other frequencies; Battle Hymn of the Republic went right on playing. Not clear why, as schedule shows 21540 for Africa changing to 17755 at 1500 daily.
I previously noted the new pdf 24-hour program grid for REE which shows
different times for Amigos de la Onda Corta, and on Nov 11 at 0105 confirmed
that it`s no longer aired at its old hour UT Sundays, but instead a show about
the cinema on 6055. Besides two inconvenient overnight hours in NAm, the times
for us to hear it now are UT Sunday 0405, which I missed this week, on 6055,
6125, 9535, 9620, and also via Costa Rica on 3350, 5965, 9675, but 5965
colliding with Vatican; and UT Monday 0330 on same except 9765 instead of 5965
** U K [non]. BBCWS via Greenville now getting a good headstart on the 21-22
transmission; Nov 9 at 2055 already running B-B-C- chimes. This contains the
Newshour 7 days a week, but breaks away for Caribbean news at 2115-2129; is
that still M-F only?
** U S A. Seems I have a hard time expressing the proper hour for the Thursday
morning WORLD OF RADIO broadcast on KAIJ 9480. It`s at 10 am Central, but I
find I have referred to this as 1700 UT in upcoming Dec MONITORING TIMES, and also post-DST on WOR I said it was at 1700. It`s really now at 1600 UT, and
while DST was on, it was 1500 UT! Since I resumed recording WOR on Wednesdays, KAIJ hasn`t always got the newest one in time to run on Thursdays, but presumably has done so on the other play Fridays at 6 am Central on 5755. The latter`s time change from 5:30 am is still not reflected either in the program schedule at http://24.151.207.180/k/kaij/pages/programs.php
Nor have I reconfirmed these myself lately by monitoring on SW or stream; has

** VATICAN [non]. The Sackville relay of Vatican Radio, now scheduled 0230-0400 in French, English and Spanish, on 6100 is facing severe interference since
that`s a Radio República frequency (not in HFCC). Nov 11 at 0258 tune in, heard
VR // 7305 in English telling a story mixed with DentroCuban jamming on 6100,
no República heard, but after 0300 RR was in the mix too. Am not sure where RR was before 0300, but they had been changing 49mb frequencies via UK (?) on even-numbered UT hours. Still the heavy QRM at 0328 recheck when VR was in Spanish
** VENEZUELA [non]. 11875 via CUBA for ``Alo, Presidente`` on Sundays from 1400is likely to be colliding with WEWN, which I noticed on Friday Nov 9 is now
running in Spanish on that frequency until 1500 ** ZANZIBAR. RTZ, 11735, just like the Nov 7 log, on Nov 9 at 2055 announcement by W in Swahili, then M in Arabic for the closing devotional with the usual opening phrase
** ALBANIA. Since my latest mention about undermodulation, R. Tirana noted with much improved modulation level, such as Nov 12 after 0330 on 6110 it was up too, maybe a bit too much with slight distortion; Nov 12 at 1534 on 13640 with
news and press review
** GUIANA FRENCH. TDF DRM, a few days ago centered on 17870, is back on
17870-17875-17880, at 1441 Nov 13, and still weak here, as redirected to
Europe. Now that the programming is (exclusively?) from RFO Guyane, it should
be more interesting to listen to. Strangely, no one has commented on this
change in the drmna yg, except on Oct 26 Brendan Wahl explained the then
absence from 17875 --- they were testing DRM on 6175 in the daytime for local
reception, and might also try 60 and 90m
** JAPAN [non]. I keep hearing NHK Warido in Japanese, even tho I am not
supposed to in NAm. VG signal on 11935, Nov 13 after 0300 with quite a variety
of music from pop to classical. It sure would be nice if someone would
translate their complete Japanese program schedule for us, so we can
concentrate on the music shows. This is Bonaire at 0200-0400, 170 degrees
intended for SAm. 6145 well heard at 0706 Nov 13. This is 35 degrees from
Yamata for eastern Siberia, but unfortunately keeps going to NAm. 9535, 55
degrees from Yamata to Mexico/CAm, with WNAm in the way, was already on at 1455 Nov 13, not supposed to open until 1500
** RUSSIA. I keep seeing publicity stating that Frecuencia RM, the VOR Spanish
DX program is at 0120 UT Wednesdays to Latin America. But that was the summer timing. Surely like everything else it is now one hour later. I finally
confirmed this myself Nov 14, when at 0120 hard news and commentary kept going. 6240 via Moldova was by far the best frequency. Then I switched to the live stream via the VOR-2 link at publicradiofan.com and kept listening for the rest of the hour. No DX program, but there was a 4-minute mailbag segment at 0143. At hourtop the program summary for next hour did not mention Frecuencia RM, just like it is missing from the LAm programming on their website, so I
suspected it was gone! But I let it play and Frecuencia RM did appear at
0222-0237, so it`s still there, a full 15 minutes, and an hour later. Most of
it was taken up by a segment from La Rosa de Tokio, namely an old Argentine
comedy show from Radio Provincia de Buenos Aires, which I would have needed to be a native to understand and get anything out of
** SAUDI ARABIA. I often tune into the call to prayer at 1500 when BSKSA opens 15435; I can appreciate it pro arte as it means nothing to me religiously. I
was listening to this Nov 12 when the signal vanished at 1505. At first I
suspected an SID, but other signals remained audible on the band OK, DX
** SPAIN. Amigos de la Onda Corta on REE confirmed at one of its new times, in
progress at 0349 UT Monday Nov 12 on 6055, mentioning the program name. Starts at 0330 or 0335
** SWEDEN. Altho R. Sweden started B-07 on 11550 at 70 degrees toward Asia and Australia for English at 1430, this changed already Nov 4 to 9400, which has
even less chance of being audible in NAm for those of us who would still like
to hear English at that hour. Only a trace of a signal here Nov 13 at 1452
** TURKEY. VOT, 12035, Monday Nov 12 at 1354 after cultural news, starting ``
Hues & Colours of Anatolia`` show about something next to the Bulgarian border.
Last week I misIDed this as ``Views & Colours…`` --- Aren`t hue and color the
same thing? Announcer talks too fast with many unfamiliar names, a failing of
many SW stations trying to convey their culture, or show off their English
proficiency.
It may seem counterproductive, but the only solution, lacking a visual text of
the talk, is to pause and spell out the names. 1405 went on to the long series
about the famous Turkish pianist, whose name I also didn`t catch and can`t
recall without looking it up. It seems as child prodigy she was discouraged
from playing Brahms, but grew to love his music
** U S A. WRMI`s schedule continues to be confused. Yet another Sunday, Nov 11, I tried (on webcast, of course) to hear the Brigade 2506 show in English which is scheduled for 11-11:15 am ET = 1600 UT on 7385. But instead there was Radio Prague at 1600-1630 (concluding with transmission schedule in French --- why???), and at 1630, World Baseball Today.
It seems the guy doing the cricket show has converted it to a slightly more
popular SBG! It really is about the world, including Asia and Latin America,
not just baseball in the USA. He seeks commercial sponsorship, on WRMI, which

frequency change announcement from 7385 to 9955, and into Radio República. Jeff White has been away in Europe, but should be back in Miami now to look into this.
On a previous occasion, at least on webcast, two programs were heard at once
for several minutes, as previous programming was running late, but WRN started
on time. This was at 1701-1706 UT Nov 7, with Aventura Diexista running late,
and Korero Pacifico from RNZI. After a frequency change announcement, only WRN was heard
** U S A. WBCQ confirmed on reactivated 17495.1, ex-18910, Sunday Nov 11 at
2120, preacher with long pauses, giving New Mexico address. Annotated program guide says it`s 7 dpw, 1800-2200: ``Program IDs as "The Lord of the Spirit Radio Broadcast". Female speaker notable for monotone delivery of scriptural material. Usually six half-hour programs in three hours. (6/6/03)``
17495 is reduced carrier USB, with little modulation detectable on LSB. Quite
weak compared to e.g. WYFR on 17535, CR on 17850
** U S A. I have been meaning to try to recatch the VOA produxion music test I
heard a few weeks ago on 15480, a Tuesday before and after 1500. This week, Nov 13, I did not remember to tune in until 1505 and nothing was there

Harold Camping all over the dial, and not only from Okeechobee. I was trying to
listen to R. Australia on 5995, Nov 13 at 1402, but there was Camping
underneath, altho with much different modulation quality than we hear from WYFR itself. Not // 17760 checked at 1442. Sure enough, YFR relay is overlapping RA for one hour at 1400-1500 from Pet-Kam, DV Russia, 5995, 244 degrees but plenty of signal way over here
** ALBANIA. R. Tirana, Nov 16 English to NAm at 2115 inaudible on 9915, maybe off for antenna repairs? Or not propagating, but // 7430 to Europe was coming in well, so we are still covered with lower winter MUFs
** ARGENTINA. RAE, 15344.6, Friday Nov 16 at 2253 in what must be DX program in Spanish, feature about the BBC, and missionary station in Congo DR whose name sounded like Radio Pacis, really Kahuzi? M&W alternate reading each sentence of script. Then some DX tips credited to Arnaldo Slaen and Conexión Digital, Cairo 6290, Rusia 6240, DW Sines 15275, Zambia 4965; outro at 2258 says it was Suplemento de Actualidad DX, written by Gabriel Iván Barrera; 2259 into next program, Conociendo la Argentina. Tho off-frequency as usual, there was nothing on 15345 at this hour to het RAE.
Last info I had was that this DX program aired Fridays at 2315, evidently moved
forward to 2250 or so; also supposed to be on 11710, 6060, not heard or
checked. May mean that the original Actualidad DX on Tuesdays is also at 2250
instead of 2315. How about the morning airing I have on the calendar at 1220?
** CUBA [non]. Have not yet reconfirmed FueraCuban R. República`s exact
schedule via UK(?) relays for B-07, as the only way to do that is via
monitoring, but Nov 16 at 2237 check, 6135 was quite strong, atop DentroCuban
jamming
** CYPRUS [non]. Looking for CyBC`s weekend-only external service in Greek,
Friday Nov 16 at 2241 on 6180, good signal with Greek music, or so I thought;
but nothing audible on // 9760, not propagating? Nor 7210. Still going on 6180
past 2245, however, and soon became clear it was RN Amazônia instead when the Greek-sounding music had Portuguese lyrix! And then a Portuguese announcement. Bryan Alexander had it figured out in DXLD 7-135. Perhaps CyBC needs to rethink its frequency selexion
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. Another check of the jamming situation against Deutsche
Welle Amharic service, Nov 16: propagation not so good today vs my high local
noise level, and at 1420 nothing audible on 11645 or 15640, which were
originally the frequencies for this service. The day before I had an unID on
15660, and this turns out in fact to be the latest frequency for the DW Amharic
service. At 1420 there was a report about Somalia, as mentioned frequently
along with Washington, and clips in American English into voice-over
translation. Was still not sure of its identity but at 1432 ``Yih Deutsche
Welle Radio`` ID and theme, so it is DW and it is Amharic.
15640 had been Trincomalee, and only the jamming against it was audible here
previously, but the 15660 signal does not have trans-polar characteristics, and
DW has indeed switched site as well as frequency, now Rwanda, as reception was fair with no polar flutter. And NO jamming audible --- until 1441 when a
slightly unstable carrier came on about 15663 and very slowly began drifting
downwards. 1444 another DW ID and theme on 15660. 1451 the interfering carrier was receding back upwards from zero-beat to 15661+.
While it was annoying, it never prevented one from hearing what DW was saying,
and understanding it if one spoke Amharic. No sign here of the several other
jamming modes. DW off at usual 1457* after frequency announcement (I wonder if that had been updated or was deliberately misleading, as jammed services cannot be blamed for doing). The other carrier stayed on a minute or so, then was gone too.
Then checking other reports, Noel Green in England made the same ID of 15660, but assumed it was Trinco ex-15640 and he was still hearing // 11645. Chris Greenway in England says that Ethiopian Review reports that Ethiopia is also jamming VOA Amharic since Nov 12. Wolfgang Büschel observes that the only country likely to provide such sensitive equipment to Ethiopia would be China.

Further checking Nov 17 of the jamming situation with DW`s Amharic service at
1400-1500:
At 1403 tuned in 15660 to find heavy adjacent splash from WHRA 15665. This is
in HFCC as daily, and on WHR website as Mon-Sat, but it certainly was not there
on Thu or Fri during this hour! On 15660 I could hear presumably DW and no
conventional jamming but there seemed to be another broadcast station mixing
with it. This was more certain at 1430 when one was in talk, the other in
music, with a fast SAH between them.
Meanwhile, there was continuous hash/noise jamming on 15640-15645 and also on 11645. 15660 for the DW Amharic service appears via Rwanda to be in addition to rather than replacing another frequency, so I guess it is still on 15640 Trinco and 11645 Kigali, altho all I can hear is noise jamming on those frequencies. Yogesh in Hong Kong was still hearing DW on 15640 Nov 16
** GREECE. Macedonian Radio Station, 7450 via Avlis, Nov 16 at 2132 with a
couple of clear IDs by W, as ``Radiophonikós Stathmós Makedonías``. Better
signal than VOG 7475, and the latter was also undermodulated
** ROMANIA [and non]. Weak signal in English on 6115, Nov 16 at 2147, which per schedules would be Romania; but also continuous noise interference, jamming or DRM? Could not really decide which, they are so much alike. But nothing on schedules likely to be jammed, tho Taldom, Russia is on DRM centered on 6105 at this time, which should be too far away to bother as this was centered on 6115. Oh! It`s Romania with its own defective roaring transmitter, I bet, self-QRMing
** SUDAN [non]. SSIRI, 15675 via South Africa, Sat Nov 17 at 1406 with English
lessons, punxuated by tones or drums; this is Tue/Thu/Sat only. Nothing audible
on 15390 which may have similar if not // programming from a further site
** SWEDEN [non]. 7120, Nov 16 at 2140, a talk in English frequently mentioning
Sweden. Yes, this is R. Sweden as scheduled at 2130 via Madagascar, 280
degrees. Fair signal and modulation different from what we get on 15240
** U S A. The Worldwide Beacon of Hope is a piece of junk, to put it politely.
Nov 16 at 2235 found 5920 signal with distorted undermodulation, furthermore
audio cutting off about 8 times per second. Fortunately, fundamentally, WBOH
has nothing sensible to say
** U S A [non]. On 7140, Nov 16 at 2238, station in Chinese talking about Mei
Guo; VOA Mandarin is scheduled during this hour only, via Udorn, Thailand at 30
degrees, so also aiming at NAm; over Firedrake co-channel jamming by the Chicom who do their best to prevent the Chinese people from hearing what America hasto say to them, quite the contrary of CRI`s multiple unimpeded English broadcasts via nearby relay sites to USA.
On 15150, Nov 16 at 2254 tone test on weak open carrier; 2300 rechecked, VOA
opening news in English, polar flutter. This is 349 degrees from Tinang,
Philippines, only until 2400.
VOA Kurdish, 17750 via Morocco, Nov 17 at 1415 with nice Kurdish music, vocal
solo with plucked instrument; 1422 giving E-mail, phone number, 1423 mentioned Spiderman 3, 1424 voanews.com/kurdish, 1425 into country music in English,quite a contrast to the earlier music. Most days, WYFR 17760 overshadows this, but not today. Another service likely to be harder for us in USA to hear once Briech is closed next March
** VATICAN. VR, 5885, very good signal Nov 16 at 2235 with bells of St.
Peter`s. Recheck after 2300, playing classical and semi-classical music. 2309
it was there, recheck at 2310 it was gone; moving transmitter to 9600? Tuned
there but XEYU and its het were both too weak
** COSTA RICA. On Sundays, REE Cariari is on both 15170 and 15125, Nov 18 at 1406, synchronized and with undermodulation, lo-fi. 15125 was weaker, to be
expected at 110 degrees vis-à-vis 340 degrees on 15170. Looked for leapfrog
mixing product on 15080, but none detected; on 15215 there was a very weak
carrier aside WYFR 15210, source unknown
** CUBA [and non]. DentroCuban Jamming Command, and R. República, were both on 6135 at 2355 check Nov 18, so presumably this starts at 2200; at 2409 recheck they had all moved to 6155 and 6135 was clear for a het to be heard, probably involving the off-frequency Bolivian.
Also checked 5955, Nov 18 at 2357 before Sackville 5960 came on, and definitely occupied by DCJC grinding, but with BFO no trace now of a carrier on 5954.1, as previously bringing us R. República from secret site. The RR signal was so weak in the first place, that I expect the DCJC first heard about it from Arnie Coro passing on DX news of it from us or other monitors. Sorry, but such are the drawbacks of a free press. RR wants to broadcast as much as possible but will not publish its own full schedule so people, let alone jammers, may not easily find it
** EGYPT. R. Cairo, 6290, Nov 18 at 2354 check, found good modulation and
strength in Arabic music, but heavy SAH of maybe 15 to 20 Hz! 0000 is the
nominal transition time between the ABS and ABZ sites on this frequency, and
obviously both transmitters were on and overlapping. Egyptians vs Egyptians!
** ETHIOPIA [non]. Another check of the jamming vs DW situation Nov 18: at
1400, 15660 came on with DW theme, fair signal but under much stronger WHRA 15665`s Heart of Jesus. Could not detect any jamming under the circumstances
** JAPAN [and non]. NHK Warido`s Sunday-morning classical music show is still
going, run across starting at 2305 UT Saturday Nov 17 on 11665, which is a
direct frequency, and on this occasion better than // 17605-Bonaire, which was
running about one second behind. Only other frequency on the B-07 schedule
which I looked up later, is 11910 to Asia, while 11665 is to SE Asia. Our cup
runneth over: CVC Chile also is doing their token classical music show during
the same hour on 15410, better reception than both of Japan`s frequencies, but
blasphemously, CVC audio kept cutting out during Hallelujah Chorus
** ROMANIA. Just like my previous log 2+ hours earlier on 6115, RRI, Nov 18 at
2356 closing English with e-mail address, IS, accompanied by its own roaringly
defective transmitter. I assume this will go away in a few months once RRI gets
all its new transmitters installed and operational, so enjoy it while you can
** SPAIN. If you hear Spanish, especially Castilian on 13720 before 1400, it`s
not the RHC leapfrog spur of 13760 over 13740 CRI relay --- because 13740 isn`t on the air yet, at least not Nov 18 at 1347 tho the 13740 carrier does come on many minutes early. This weakish signal was instead REE, // 17595 with news of Pakistan, Darfur. 13720 is in HFCC registered from 0600 to 1700, for W&CEu, at 0 degrees, but the REE frequency schedule

shows 08-13 only, except Sat/Sun to 1400. So another caveat not to take HFCC
registrations as absolute; they are at times exaggerated, to allow wiggle room
in case a station wants to extend usage of a certain frequency. Since REE does
run to 1400 on weekends, however, both RHC spur and REE could be audible and mixing on 13720 for a few minutes
** U S A. Sunday Nov 18 at 1338 noticed that DXing with Cumbre was running on WHRI 7520. Two weeks before at same time, it was on 11785! This date, no WHR on 11785, just Chinese with a het, probably Indonesia. 11785 was on after 1400 for Hmong Lao Radio. Trouble is, the WHR website sked for ``Angel 1`` claims DWC is at 1330 Saturday on 7520, and 1330 Sunday on 11785! I give up
** VENEZUELA [and non]. The 2300-2400 UT broadcast of R. Nacional de Venezuela, Canal Internacional, via Cuba, is unlike most of the others supposed to be on two frequencies, but Nov 17 at 2315 found it only on 15250, nothing on 13680; but at 2352 recheck, both were on. You just can`t depend on the Cuban
transmitter engineers to be on time.
As expected, there is a big collision between RNV via Cuba and WEWN on Sundays when both are on 11875 for an hour; as confirmed Nov 18 at 1408 when RNV was way over WEWN; 11875 // 17750 but an echo apart from two different Cuban sites. Commies vs Catholix!
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. 6300, no sign of LV de la RASD, Nov 18 at 2353 --- off earlier, moved or silent again?
** COLOMBIA. Marfil Estéreo, 5910.0, free of co- or adjacent-channel broadcast
QRM at 2350 Nov 19 with nice lively ballads, 2353 timecheck for 6:52, only one
sesquiminute off this time, and ID; another ID voice-over music at 2400. There
was however, more often than not, some lite pulsing ute QRM on the high side,
somewhat evitable

transmission schedule in English, arranged by target area, and followed at 2330
by English, while the 2300-2327 broadcast is scheduled in French. So maybe the
language of the 3-minute schedule summary between broadcasts matches the
transmission which follows rather than the one which precedes, despite the fact
that relays such as WRMI wind up broadcasting 3 minutes of irrelevant French
after 27 minutes of English. Then I checked 6000 at 2330 and found R. Praga in
Spanish via Sackville as usual colliding with RHC in Spanish
** EGYPT. 6290, Nov 20 at 0001 still had two carriers from two Radio Cairo
sites colliding with heavy SAH; 0003 only the distorted one was left with
Arabic talk and music alternating
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. WHRA was gone again from 15665, Monday Nov 19 at 1427, so it must be a Sat/Sun thing only, and no longer QRMing DW`s new Amharic frequency via Rwanda, 15660 --- and there was no jamming audible on it this time either. DW`s other frequency, 15645 via Sri Lanka, did have noise jamming on it and no DW audible at 1447. At first I thought 15660 might have some co-channel audio again, but could not detect any at 1447
** KOREA NORTH. KCBS, 9665, mostly-noise transmitter audible here not only
mornings but evenings, such as 2315 UT Nov 19; bits of audio mixed in. I can`t
imagine why the Korcoms keep this piece of garbage on the air 22 hours a day.
Does not even serve a jamming purpose as nothing else in Korean on 9665 or
neighbors, per Aoki/NDXC. China does use 9665 several hours in external and
domestic services
** SPAIN. We had Radio Waves, the not-really-DX program on REE, on the schedule as UT Wed 0024v on 6055, but Wolfgang Büschel found an English program schedule as of last March which showed it Monday on Eu/Af service, so repeated UT Tue to NAm. Checking it out UT Tue Nov 20, interminable sillyballgame report was airing instead, but RW finally started at 0032, and yes, they are still just playing music, loosely related to radio. This time: Popa Chubby, blues singer who had just appeared in Madrid on European tour, with ``Real Thing``, which the host said was more anti-TV than pro-radio. ** U S A. I can no longer say I never hear a US SW station, government or
private, playing the Star Spangled Banner. Ran across it on WTJC 9370, Mon Nov 19 at 2320, choral version, and including second verse, ``O Thus Be It E`er``, because that asserts ``In God is our trust`` until 2323 and immediately into
some ordinary hymn. Certainly an odd time to be playing the NA, maybe just a
fluke and not repeatable, but check again at this time of day
** VENEZUELA [non]. RNV CI via Cuba, 13680, Nov 19 carrier was already on air at 2255 with squealing the only `modulation`, worst when tuning to the edge of
the signal. 2317 recheck was in ``Contacto con los Diexistas`` mailbag, from
Japan, Cuba, then explained SINPO; and UTC as the same as ``Tiempo Civil`` or ``GTM`` as I`ve heard them do before, ending segment at 2320 with a gmail
address, I think just rnv@gmail.com?
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. Since I didn`t hear R. Nacional de la RASD the day before at all a few minutes before 2400, checked 6300 earlier Nov 19 at 2333 and it was there; tried to hear Spanish, but brain would not lock into Spanish mode, and decided it must be Hassania, rather than Hassania-accented Spanish. At 2401 recheck, however, definitely in Spanish ending ``Opinión`` commentary saying that Spain should be part of the solution to the conflict. 0002
sign-off, anthem played by off-key band to 0003 Nov 20 and carrier stayed on a
while longer
** AUSTRALIA. Tnx to the VL8s for keeping the 60m band interesting and
unpredictable. Nov 20 at 1329 I found R. Rebelde, Cuba, 5025, with heavy
co-channel QRM in English, the two at about equal levels and nearly zero-beat
--- could not tell whether fading was propagational or a slight SAH, maybe
both. Soon IDed as 105.7 ABC Darwin, 1330 news theme and news at the top of
their wacky hour. This signal was much stronger than the several Indos audible
on 60m, and would have been quite listenable if in the clear like 4910
sometimes is when it fails to shift to 120m at 0830. By 1455, VL8K Katherine
was atop Cuba, which by now is fading down anyway. Final check at 1511 found
ABC still good with little Cuba left, mentioning a Pavarotti CD, 1512 ID again
as 105.7 ABC Darwin. Why do they keep IDing only for this little FM station
with very limited range around one city, when they have worldwide coverage on
SW? Isn`t that at least worth a mention on the air? Surely back in Darwin they
are not unaware of the NT SW relays. Think small!
** CHINA. Just as I tuned in Firedrake on 7300, Nov 20 at 0700, it went off in
usual top of hour break for monitoring of Sound of Hope --- I could not hear
it; maybe FD did. Also had Chinese on 4900, Nov 20 at 1407 while I was getting
Indonesia elsewhere on band; presumably V. of Strait
** CUBA. On R. Rebelde, 11655, Nov 20 at 1345 heard part of a promo for that
evening`s Mesa Redonda, which they said would include Dan Rather. This usually airs at 2330 UT via RHC on 6000, 9820
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. Nov 20 check for jamming against DW Amharic: at 1408,
15660 was audible with DW but also with continuous noise, same as on 15640
where nothing else was heard; nothing audible on 11645. DW`s Amharic service is a bit strange; the news actualities leading to voice-overs all seem to be in
English, not German, and at 1410 the news was about Myanmar, not Ethiopia. 1412 ID as ``Yih Deutsche Welle Radio`` and theme. At 1415 I thought I detected some other jamming modes under the noise on 15660 via Rwanda. By 1449 the noise jamming was gaining here over DW.
As for Ethiopia also jamming VOA Amharic, BBC Monitoring says three of the five frequencies at 1800-1900 are jammed, and also Oromo weekdays at 1730 on same
** GERMANY [non]. DW in German, so of course it can`t be from Germany: Nov 20 at 1450 on 15335 via Sines, running about a second ahead of 15275 Kigali when rechecked at 1510
** INDONESIA. Nov 20 an above average day for 60m Indonesians. 4605 RRI Serui was by far the best signal. What power does PWBR ``2008`` assign to this now? Last year it was only 500 watts, but since then has been widely heard and has got to be much more than that. All I ever heard on 4605 today was ``island``
music as I tuned back and forth, starting at 1333, with CODAR adding to the
beat; a very long pause between cuts at 1340; and music again at 1405; maybe I
missed some news on the hour.
Others also heard with non // programming, mostly music: at 1333 4750 (mix
China?) and 4870; 1405, 4750 and 4790; listening to 4790 at 1457 when it went
off abruptly amid music; that frequency was a tad high
** JAPAN [and non]. Not jamming per se, but CRI just happens to have a Russian broadcast on 5965 at the very same time that RCI Mandarin is relayed via Yamata, 1500 UT. As noted Nov 20 at 1459, NHK multi-lingual IDs including
English, overridden by CRI ID in Chinese, IS, opening Russian, which is at 55
degrees to E Sibir. At 1514 one of them was playing El Condor Pasa, in either
case, incongruously
** ROMANIA. It`s so recognizable, the Tiganeshti transmitter which puts out as
much roaring noise as it does RRI modulation. Nov 20 at 1349, there it was on
15105, as scheduled in English at 1300
** U S A. WBOH, 5920, distorted as usual, Nov 20 at 1501, also with buzzy spur
around 5927; I can`t be positive this buzz was from WBOH, but they have
previously had such problems with identifiable audio
** U S A [non]. Two R. Free Asia frequencies from Tinian were coming in well,
Nov 20 at 1502, 5810 in Mandarin mixed with Firedrake, and 5860 in Korean free
of jamming, so should be good for the northerners listening secretly
undercover, after midnight. Also on 6140 central Asian language at 1504 with
VOA theme, news of Pakistan. Scheduled as Uzbek via Tinian at 1500-1530. That`s a pretty long haul and I wonder why they don`t use a closer site such as
Iranawila
** ALBANIA [and non]. Trying again to hear R. Tirana`s NAm service on new B-07 frequency 9915, Nov 22 at 2104, but could barely detect a carrier under high
noise level in this range, which is also subject to desensitization by
super-strong Pastor Pete Peters from WWCR 9975. That overloads the receiver
also risking cross-modulation on other 9 MHz stations if attenuation is not
applied. But R. Tirana with fair signal on 7430 at 2107, so again the European
service makes it while the NAm does not. I am sure RT would like to know how
well 9915 makes it into the east coast, as would I
** ANTARCTICA. Looking for LRA36, Nov 22 around 2000, not audible, but
rechecked at 2046 could barely hear some music on 15476, not 15475. 2101 some talk mentioning Esperanza, and more music which was cut off in progress at 2102:15 and the carrier off a few seconds later
** CHINA [non]. An undermodulated discussion in English about e/immigration
from/to Ireland caught my ear on 13630, Nov 22 at 2036. Shortly later it became
clear this was just CRI, as the topic became the first Irish study center in
China. It`s 111 degrees from Bamako, Mali.
On 7285, Nov 22 at 2128, sports report in American English had me guessing;
another non-African VOA service not // African service on 6080? After 2131,
Chinese-accented woman joined in, about computers. Apparently the
domestic-cum-external hour from CRI, in scheduled relay via Cërrik, Albania
** CHINA [and non]. 9355, Nov 22 at 2013, Firedrake fairly good, but QRM from
WYFR in German altho really targeted at RFA in Chinese via Saipan. Fortunately, Firedrake VG in the clear on 9455 at 2106, also against RFA Chinese via Saipan but RFA inaudible on either frequency
** CUBA. Sat with BFO on 5955 from 2255 UT Nov 21 to see what would happen with Radio República and the DentroCuban Jamming Command. At about 2257:30 the first signs of jamming were heard and built up steadily to full level at 2300 as more transmitters were added, but never any sign of RR carrier on 5954 by 2302 when I quit. Well, at least this ties up some jammers which might be doing more damage elsewhere
** CUBA. This is hardly news, but RHC still doesn`t have its act together. Nov
22 at 2028 on 11800 I heard the outroduxion of the Portuguese service at 2000,
claiming it was on 17750. I quickly punched up that frequency on another
receiver, but nothing heard. At 2029, 11800 introduced the RHC Arabic service
(for all those Arabs in the Caribbean, never mind Europe, Africa and the
Mideast; rather like Taiwan, q.v. broadcasting in French to Greenland.) At 2032
tuned over to 11760 to reconfirm RHC`s English service, which does not exist
according to their own schedule. There it was, but with heavy ACI from WHRI
11765, and // 9505. 11760 was running a good two seconds behind weaker but
clearer 9505! Could Arnie explain how that happens? Strange. The 2030-2130
English broadcast was originally for Europe, but apparently due to lack of
suitable antenna, they don`t say where it`s for, but presumably North America.
Aoki shows broadcasts before/after this hour on both frequencies as 100 kW
non-direxional
I see that both Aoki and EiBi do not list this 2030-2130 English broadcast on
either frequency, leaving a gap during that hour. Apparently they prefer to
believe the disinformative schedule from RHC itself than my repeatedly reported
reconfirmation by monitoring that this transmission exists! Geez; why do I
bother? Well, those who do read my reports have the correct info about this
** ECUADOR [non]. 12025, VG signal in Arabic at 2143 Nov 22, but at 2144:30 cut to RCI IS and IDs for a semiminute until 2145* This is one of those
multi-layered gospel huxter services, which HFCC classifies as HCJB via Merlin
via Sackville, 250 kW, 73 degrees to CIRAF 37 and 38NW, i.e. Iberia, Morocco,
Algeria, Tunisia, Libya. This confusing transmission is missing from Eibi, and
Aoki has A07 info as via Rampisham. It does switch sites depending on season,
so tnx to RCI for leaving no doubt about it currently.
Let us approach identifying this from HCJB. This page makes no mention of
Canada as one of the relay sites they use, but UK is mentioned:

Where do you find a COMPLETE HCJB SW schedule including relay sites? Not from them directly, it seems. Try searching the site on Arabic, and you get 53
articles going back a few years, but I just want to know what this 2100 UT
broadcast is. No, I am not going to go thru all 53 of them, but something looks
familiar at #50 from 8 April 2005, in part:
``HCJB World Radio reaches across North Africa, the Middle East and Europe with Christian Arabic programming aired via shortwave, satellite and local stations. The Radio Al Mahabba (Radio Love) Arabic satellite network airs programs direct-to-home 24 hours a day.``
** EGYPT [and non]. Checked R. Cairo`s European frequency 6250, Nov 21 at 2237 to see whether reactivated Equatorial Guinea is colliding with it. No sign of
the latter, so maybe confined to local mornings if still on the air as reported
recently. Cairo was playing Arab music, pausing at 2237 for the YL announcer to
close the English service until 2115 the next day; her modulation on mic was
more distorted than the music before and after. No further announcements were
made, as music kept playing until 2245 brief tone and off. Surely a better
signal even here than the so-called North American service from 2300 on 9465,
often inaudible with low MUFs.
Since I was monitoring T-giving afternoon at a time I usually don`t, I checked
to see how early R. Cairo could be heard on 48m. Nov 22 at 2039 it was
definitely there, but marred by slightly off-frequency 2-way SSB, which is
after all, what belongs in this frequency range. 6290 in Arabic was also barely
audible. Checked 6250 again just before 2115, and timesignal, six seconds late
compared to WWV, so why bother? And opening English with age-old Cairo theme; what`s the name of it? Again no sign of Equatorial Guinea on 6250, and Brian Alexander says he heard it in the morning only on Nov 17. That may have been a special temporary reactivation
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. Nov 21 check of jamming against DW Amharic: earlier in
the 1400 UT hour, just noise on 15645 and 15660, but at 1452 around 15645 there were oscillating tones, and less so but detectable on 15660. Already at 1456 the jamming went off 15645. As usual, DW itself was audible only on 15660.
DW, 9690 via Kigali, 295 degrees, English to WAf, Nov 22, after news about
Uganda at 2016, at 2019-2023 interviewed the head of DW`s Amharic service,
Ludgar Sadowski (sp?) about the recently started Ethiopian jamming. Among the
points: it was first detected by DW`s in-house monitors on Nov 11 against the
service`s two frequencies [WTFK? 15640, 11645], and `yesterday` also against
the third [15660]; and there is also jamming against 3/5 of the VOA Amharic
frequencies. The jamming will ultimately backfire, but DW is not pointing
fingers at who is behind it; however, DW Intendant Bettermann has written to
the Ethiopian ambassador in Berlin asking him to look into it. There has been a
clampdown on press freedom in Ethiopia since the elexions of May 2005.
As usual, DW makes you go thru multiple steps until you finally find their
current English SW radio PROGRAM (as opposed to frequency or transmission)
schedule. Saving you the trouble, here it is:

Which however does NOT show the frequency I was listening to, 9690, but rather
ex-9735. It does show that the program was the 25-minute (short) version of
Newslink. I am looking for the audio file to reference. Back on the
audio-on-demand page, however, checked after 2300 UT, already replacing the
2005 edition, we get the 2105 UT edition of Newslink, which does NOT include
this story which should have started about :14 minutes into the file. Also, you
have to choose the real version if you want to be able to move immediately into
the file, not the mp3 or wm versions, altho the latter show the length of the
file and the embedded real player does not. What a mess and a waste of time
** INDONESIA. Nov 21 not so good a day for 60m Indos, but RRI Serui was still
audible, unlike the others, just music at 1415. I have seen reports of this as
4606, so I measured it to 4604.9 or so
** LIBERIA [non]. Star Radio, via Ascension, 9525, Nov 21 at 0703 with YL
reading news about Liberia; modulation was somewhat muffled, not what I would
expect from VTC/Merlin. Also weak het from 9526, but not really a problem,
presumably Indonesian carrier already on. The next morning, Brian Alexander
heard Radio Okapi instead of Star, quite a mixup?
** MEXICO. XEYU, Radio UNAM is usually on when checked lately, such as Nov 22 at 2026 with classical vocal music, somewhere between 9599.2 and 9599.3, atop whatever was hetting from 9600.0
** SEYCELLES [non]. Strong Arabic signal on 9550, Nov 22 at 2013 I first
assumed was RHC until I found Cuba really opening their Arabic at 2029 on
11800, just as 9550 was going off at 2030. So looking that up, I find it`s
really FEBA via Kigali, 30 degrees to the ME daily at 1900-2030
** SPAIN [and non]. REE`s main frequency to NAm, 9630, marred by BBCWS in
English underneath, Nov 22 at 2015; BBC was // if not exactly synchronized with
15400 and 17830 Ascension, whilst 9630 is Seychelles at 270 degrees until 2100. I wonder why BBC continues from its Seychelles site, while FEBA found it too costly to continue theirs
** SRI LANKA. 7595 with something in Central Asian language, Nov 21 at 1447,
and giving a www at 1451; RTTY QRM on high side. EiBi and HFCC say it`s R.
Liberty in Tajik via Iranawila, 348 degrees, so also favoring NAm
** TAIWAN [non]. R. Taiwan International, 13695 // 11665, in French news
headlines, constantly interrupted by bits of music, as if giving the news
straight would be too boring! Both are via WYFR: 11665 is 44 degrees to Europe,
while 13695 is 355 degrees for Canada east of 90W plus Greenland. Not too many broadcasts in French to Greenland, I expect. Thank you, RTI
** U S A [and non]. With so many new immigrants, legal or otherwise, in the
USA, who need to learn English, why not convert the VOA into another Radio
Canada Internal? VOA already has Special English on Greenville 11975 aimed at
Africa but plenty strong back here in the heartland, as noted Nov 22 at 1950.
This would doubtless give VOA a higher profile inside the country, which is
apparently what RCI was looking for. Only a slight change in name would be
necessary, Voice of Americans, or Voice of American English.
African Beat was inbooming on 13710, Nov 22 at 2037 giving phone and e-mail
addresses. During this hour only, 13710 is via Botswana, 350 degrees.
During the next hour are other music programs for Africa, but on different
frequencies. 15580 Greenville at 21-22 only is primary, unless MUF and skipzone do not cooperate, but also heard it not exactly synchronized on 6080, at 2108 Nov 22, which is São Tomé at 335 degrees; quickly tuned out when they talked about America Idol. Who cares?
** U S A. AFN, 7811-USB, Nov 22 at 2122 was still/again cutting out more than
in, during feature about Thanksgiving from census.gov, and still cutting out,
somewhat less, during Clark somebody`s talk show about VOIP. Isn`t anybody
responsible for this transmission paying attention?
** U S A. WHRA, 7520, Nov 21 at 2219 had some weaker CW on 7519 needing no BFO other than WHRA carrier. Cadence sounded like cut numbers, groups of 5, but did not make sure of this. I did hear `AR` run together which I don`t think is part of usual spy letters messages.
WHRA used to be on 11765 at the same time, but now it`s WHRI scheduled, Nov 21 at 2226, 315 degree azimuth close to usward, and huge signal accompanied by noisy sidebands, especially during music. By tuning to 11760 or 11770 one hears a continuous noise much like DRM, as if there were separate carriers; wonder what it looks like on a scope. Later at 2253 some speech was little better,
since even during pauses there was background modulation keeping the sideband hash going.
Checking WHRA, 11785, Thu Nov 22 at 1939, found that contrary to online
schedule, it is not in English, but some unID tonal African language! Another
clandestine broadcast? Maybe just missionary, as variations of ``kristian``
heard periodically, also mentions of Darfur. Tuned in at 1939 with YL talking;
1944 primitive and distorted music break; more talk, 1952 chanting with rustic
musical instruments. Did not catch anything resembling an ID until 1958 when
WHR announced in English QSY to 7520. The online schedule as of Nov 22 just
shows for M-F during this hour:

So I am fairly sure it was neither of these; even if Shockley broadcasts in
unID African tonal language, it was already going before 1945. So what is
this?? Whatever it is, I suspect it is ruining reception of V. of Indonesia`s
French service in Europe during this hour, right? If they are still on 11784.9
instead of 15150v or 9526v
** U S A. 9265, Nov 22 at 2013 man speaking over PA about Yahweh; no ID, but am 101% certain this was WMLK as scheduled. The modulation level is no longer very poor, but fair, and definitely not yet good. Off when rechecked sometime after 2100
** U S A. WBCQ couldn`t find the new WOR 1383, so started to play some other
program on 7415, UT Friday Nov 23 at 0030. We had to phone it in, but that
didn`t start until about 0035, and we were cut off at 0100 before the
late-starting program was over. During the first several minutes there was also
crosstalk, evidently the operator on another line or on open mike discussing
this with someone else. It`s always something, with WBCQ
** MEXICO. XEXQ is back! I`ve been keeping a close watch on 6045 since R.
Universidad de San Luís Potosí disappeared almost 4 months ago. My last log of
it was Aug 3, in DXLD 7-092.
Finally, Nov 23 at 0625 I detected the tell-tale subaudible het mixing with KBS
World Radio in Spanish via Sackville on 6045. After that went off at 0629, a
hefty carrier of S9 +10 remained on frequency, and I kept listening until 0643,
but absolutely no modulation heard.
Retuned at 1352 and now there was classical music, good signal on 6045, Gaîté
Parisienne. The can-can girls were celebrating with high kicks! Segués to more
pop classics with no announcements, XEXQ`s usual style, until 1359, timecheck
for 7:59, ID as R. Universidad, 25,000 watts on 1190 AM, no mention of SW. Then a string of government PSAs including one for transplants from the Secretaría de Salud, and another full ID for XEXQ including their phone number 826-1345, 8:02 TC and 1403 back to music. Still coming in well past 1452 at S9+10. It will be interesting to see in solstitial conditions how far it can penetrate
north of the border during daytime, perhaps even at low noon.
There is more news here, as their MW frequency used to be 1460 with 250 watts.
Seems there has been a major upgrade to 1190 with 25 kW, along with a change in transmitter site. Note the night power is only 300 watts.

any further details? Of course not! Are there any further links from this page,
such as to a webcast or a program schedule? No. It does show the person in

Despite the abysmally poorly-designed website, we are delighted that XEXQ is
reactivated on SW and hope it is back to stay this time. The signal seems
better than before, and the frequency is relatively clear much of the time.
Aoki shows hardly anything else on 6045 between 0630 and 1430 UT when India
starts.
It`s also of note that all three currently active Mexican SW stations are
cultural ones, playing lots of classical music. (Excluding XERTA 4810, reported
once recently but still not heard again here.), while zero US SW stations are
cultural, let alone non-commercial and would not be caught dead playing
classical. (One could hardly classify VOA as cultural these days.) Clear
evidence that the United States of Mexico are way ahead of the US of A
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI, 5950, Nov 23 at 1406-1414, YL reading Met Service Coastal Forecasts, lots of rough seas, I guess covering every part of NZ`s formidable coastline, identified with unfamiliar names à la Britain, concluding at 1413 with Chatham Islands, 1414 to a short story reading. Very specialised
programming, hardly of any interest to the other Pacific Islands, or indeed
anybody not directly involved with each coastal area
** AFGHANISTAN [non]. R. Solh, 15265 via UK, Nov 25 at 1359 made a one-minute deadair pause followed by 4 minutes of talk, 1404 back to music, rap in English mixed in, but some cuts we don`t remember hearing before. However, at 1424 was playing the bi-lingual one noted before, girl singer with heart throbbing,
``you are my only one``, etc. Scandalous
** AUSTRALIA. 4910, VL8A, once again on very late, instead of having switched
to 120m at 0830 Nov 25. That`s fine with me, as hearing any of the NT stations
on 2 MHz is quite problematical here. At 1331, 4910 was in ABC hourtop news,
then sports. 1336 ID as ABC Alice Springs, then mentioned ABC Local Radio and Radio Australia for ``Sunday Night`` program. Fair and in the clear
** CHINA. Nov 26 at 2314, 5050 has fluttery Vietnamese language signal. Per
Aoki, that would be Guangxi FBS, Nanning, 15 kW at 225 degrees, not bad; but
Aoki also has a conflict:

Chinese domestic(?) services, showing neither.
Whatever, nice to hear FE on 60m after sunset. Moot at 2346, as 5050 wiped out
by WWRB on early; see U S A.
Also had something in Chinese audible on 4800, Nov 27 at 0008 with CODAR. Per Aoki, this is CNR1 via Geermu
** CUBA [and non]. Checking again for R. República`s mystery frequency, 5954.1 – altho not heard a few days ago, just jamming, on Nov 26 I tuned in at 2223 and found it on the air with continuous lite vocal music, splash from WYFR
5950, no announcements 2223-2233+, and at 2245 when a het with something on 5955.0 was increasing. This music was nothing like RR programming, e.g. on 6135 at the same time, either talk or lively Cuban music, but it must be the same
transmitter as on off-frequency, previously carrying RR after 2300. At 2256
lite jamming began to be heard mixing with the music; 2258, more jamming, less
music, still het. Jamming dominated as usual after 2300 but could still detect
carrier on 5954.1. At 0004 Nov 27, YL talk presumably RR audible under jamming, and not // RR on 6155. Need people to monitor 5954.1 as early as possible, maybe from 2200 during the musical prélude for any clews as to origin
** EGYPT. Conclusion of R. Cairo English to Europe, 6250, somewhat different
from previous log. Nov 26 at 2240 M announcer was closing with goodbye, and
tinny national anthem; 2241 switched to tone for a semiminute which was
well-modulated unlike the preceding programming! carrier off at 2242* with its
characteristic pulsing of 5 or 6 times before going completely off.
DX Mix News, Bulgaria Nov 26 published an updated R. Cairo operational
schedule, showing that the site switch on 6290 occurs at 2300 UT, instead of
0000. Nov 26 I was too busy monitoring other frequencies at 2300, but as I
previously noted, the long overlap was not heard until 2350 when there was a
subaudible het of maybe 20 Hz, Cairo vs. Cairo! Undermodulated audio in Arabic
from the first site, ABZ to WEu at 315 degrees, underneath open carrier from
the second site, ABS to NAm at 325 degrees, which was not clear from the ABZ
carrier until 0002:40 Nov 27, also undermodulated, and distorted. So we wonder
what else in that DX Mix schedule may be incorrect
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. DW Amharic service via Rwanda may have moved from 15660 to 15620. Nov 25 at 1420 found nothing but noise on 15660, despite 15665 WHRA which was not too strong this Sunday, but on 15620, German language lessons. I think the jammers already found it, as some noise mixed in. At 1510 recheck, 15620 was in Russian, which is DW via Sines, Portugal from 1500.
Aoki and EiBi have a 1330-1500 gap in DW`s usage of 15620, so that would be a
good fit as a new 14-15 Amharic frequency. However HFCC also has this:

But that`s not for Ethiopia, instead Afghanistan, in Dari & Pashto per Nov 21

And since I did not check between 1430 and 1500 I can`t be sure what I heard
was really Amharic staying on past 1430. I have a hard time recognizing Amharic
just by listening, unless there is an ID starting with ``Yih ---``. Can someone
suggest some other common and distinctive words to listen out for? The same
could be said for Pashto, which may have been what I was really hearing.
Possibly as a counter-jamming tactic, DW has swapped the Pashto and Amharic
frequencies? Europeans, please check this out on Monday.

Nov 26 check: nothing audible on 15660, 15640, but definitely DW Amharic on
15620 at 1427, no jamming heard, but noise could be there obscured by local
high noise level. 1432 DW theme and ID, so it is the almost-hour broadcast
starting at 1400, ex-15660. Since I am no longer hearing it on 15660, and
propagation favors Rwanda, I suspect 15620 is now Rwanda, but Wolfgang Büschel
says they are still on 15660, 15640, 11645 as well as 15620, so that makes four
frequencies instead of the original two for this now jammed transmission.
However, after 1500, 15620 came back on with DW in Russian as previously
scheduled via Sines. Trouble is, after initial ID at hourtop there was dead air
for two minutes; then they fished around for program feed, brought up something
(DW or BBC?) in English news at 1502, fading it out and back in; finally found
Russian at 1503, joined in progress. Anyhow, this means I can`t rule out the DW
Amharic service earlier on 15620 as also via Sines now
** GUATEMALA [and non]. 4780, R. Coatán, Nov 26 at 2348 bible reading in
Spanish, but also with fast SAH rippling the frequency, besides CODAR. Nothing
else known anywhere on 4780 except Djibouti, so I wonder if they left their
carrier on very late. At 0007 recheck the SAH was gone.
R. Verdad, 4052.5, Nov 26 at 2346 with timecheck 14<18, hymn; fair
** GUIANA FRENCH. TDF DRM, 17870-17875-17880, again being heard at its previous level, so suspect the antenna is once again toward NAm rather than Eu, Mon Nov 26 at 1523, but is it still RFO Guyane programming? O, this was the special for Ecuador as in DRM DX for this date only:

** MEXICO. Still looking for more from XEXQ 6045, but nothing audible Nov 25 at 0630 or 1330. Nor Nov 26 at 1425, 2215.
But XEXQ was audible on 6045 when rechecked Nov 26 at 2249, classical music
with co-channel in Chinese, i.e. VOA Udorn, 30 degrees during this hour only
and/or Chicom jamming. 2300 Spanish announcements but could not make them out, with increased QRM from CRI Sackville in English on 6040; 2305 classical music.
Fair at times depending on amount of splash from 6040. 0038 recheck more
classical, now ACI from 6040 CRI Sackville in Chinese (not English as in Aoki);
could not detect co-channel from IBC Tamil, ESE from Wertachtal which recently
moved to 6045 during this hour only. But prime is not the best time to listen
to XEXQ
** PRIDNESTROVYE. 6240, Radio PMR/DMR, monitored off and on Nov 26-27 while checking other things. Tune-in 2325 in French, 2330 changing into German, 2344 concluding German mentioning ``Republik Moldaus`` (Moldau? not to be confused with the river in Czechia), and off at 2345*. Figured that was all, so did not check at 0000, but ran across 6240 on again at 0024 and once more in French, and another switch to German at 0030-0045*. There was occasional QRM de big ute data bursts lasting a few seconds. I assume that there is English M-F at 2300-2315 and 0000-0015, French at 2315-2330 and 0015-0030, German at 2330-2345 and 0030-0045 Tue-Sat. Mike Barraclough, England was monitoring at the same time and did hear English at 2300 and 2400. Christopher Lewis first reported English at 2300 on Nov 22, but I have missed it so far. Station mentioned in French/German that it broadcasts to Europe and North America. At this hour surely for NAm, a newly revived service, and another odd case of one country broadcasting to another country in a language native to neither. Why don`t they broadcast in Romanian during the final quarter hour?
** RUSSIA. 5900, at 0005 Nov 27, warbling carrier, unable to determine
language, but VOR Portuguese scheduled from Moscow site. Why don`t they put
this poor thing out of its misery? See previous report in DXLD 7-130; ex 7300,
not 7400
** SPAIN. REE, 6055, English to NAm, UT Tue Nov 27 at 0041 was ending Radio Waves. This week`s radio song was ``Mama Radio``. Host Justin Coe gave 6-figure P O Box, new e-mail address of english @ rtve.es and ``keep the TV off and the radio on`` till show ended at 0042:30. Well, it was almost time for me to watch Countdown at 0100 on MSNBC
** SWEDEN [non]. Surprised to hear Swedish at 0037 Nov 26, on 6100, Sackville, which starts RCI at 0100. No such 0030 transmission in Aoki or EiBi, but is in HFCC, apparently a late addition by R. Sweden to the B-07 schedule ** U S A. Had been hearing China [q.v.] on 5050, but Nov 26 at 2346, wiped out
by WWRB with big band music warmup/fill, on much earlier than licensed *0000.
Still BB music at 0007, piano music at 0022, their only programming worth
listening to
** U S A. WTJC, 9370, monitored Nov 26 at 2317-2323, but no Star Spangled
Banner, unlike a few days before, just Xmas music, and fading into noise level
by 2325
** CUBA. It`s incredible; when going to the RHC website, http://www.radiohc.cu
one is hit by popup ads for Celldoradio.com, obviously a totally unrelated
capitalist enterprise selling ringtones; or is it phishing --- ``enter your PIN
code``??
Anyhow, I was having another look at the unreliable transmission schedule,

to see if 15230 was still on it: no, and I think they really don`t use this
frequency any more; at least not in the 1300 UT hour when CRI in English via
Sackville is on it, tho for years previous they collided, commies vs commies!
** ETHIOPIA [and non]. Nov 27 check of DW Amharic and jamming: at 1445, 15620 again by far the best, no jamming audible. Unlike the day before, DW barely audible on 15660 under heavy noise jamming, and seemed almost synchronized with 15620. Also audible under noise on 11645. Not audible on 15640, which is reported still to be active; that makes sense here as that is Sri Lanka relay. Jamming on 15660 lasted until 1501; just as I switched on BFO to be sure heard one of those ute data bursts, perhaps unrelated.
Nov 28 check of DW Amharic & jamming: at *1359:20, 15620 carrier came on, DW ID and opening. Could not hear any jamming on fairly good signal. Then checked 15660 and DW was audible this time, tho much weaker, and as far as I could tell was perfectly synchronized with 15620. This may or may not be significant in hypothesizing transmitter sites. At 1415, 15660 had a variable het interfering. 1455 recheck, 15620 still much stronger than 15660. Never audible on 15640 or 11645
** GERMANY. Russian on 13755, Nov 27 at 1503 with heavy echo. HFCC says this is VOR via Wertachtal, 125 kW at 120 degrees. Suspect both long and short paths being heard
** GUIANA FRENCH. TDF DRM test gone again from 17870-17875-17880, nothing heard Nov 27 at 1449
** JAPAN [non]. NHK Warido, R. Japan, news in English, Nov 28 at 1404 on 17580, weak and running a good two seconds behind Sackville on 11705. HFCC shows 17580 is Meyerton at 355 degrees, while RJ`s pdf transmission schedule shows Ascension to Central Africa. Which is it?
** KURDISTAN [and non]. Denge Mezopotamiya, 11530 via Pridnestrovye, coming in well Nov 28 at 1458, but as closing announcements were running, huge WEWN carrier kicked on and off twice just before 1459, and then stayed on, soon modulated with eerie choral IS; during pause I could barely hear V. of
Mesopotamia underneath
** MEXICO. XEXQ, 6045 on the air again, let us hope to stay, Nov 27 at 1405 and 1458 chex with classical music. Seems XEXQ leaves its carrier on 6045 late,
maybe all night; too bad they don`t modulate it too. Nov 28 at 0644 found open
carrier as before; next check at 1320, was in talk rather than music
programming with some ``Cápsulas de Ciencia y Tecnología`` from a Mexican
government agency, apparently aimed at young people, inspired by Bill el
Científico but not quite as frantic and wacky. Topic: fossils and Darwin. VG
modulation now, and almost 44444.
Also received a reply today from station director LCC. Ma. Leticia Zavala Pérez
saying they are still running only the authorized 250 watts from their new 1 kW
transmitter, and the antenna is a 9-meter dipole oriented N-S; contradicting
the previous info that it is an inverted V of 12 meters. Schedule 1300-0500,
hopefully expanding to 24 hours next year; not yet webcasting, also expected to
start by mid-2008. She also says the switch from MW 1460 to 1190 was almost
four years ago; how out of date some references may be
** CUBA. As if to thwart my suggestion yesterday that we should monitor 5954.1
in the unjammed hour previous to 2300, when it was carrying music instead of R.
República, on Nov 28 the DCJC had already attacked the frequency with some
pulse jamming when tuned in at 2228. Altho jamming not at full force, could not
detect musical prélude or even a carrier on 5954.1, but the weak station on
5955 was collaterally damaged; listed as BBC Singapore or Oman.
I also noticed some lite jamming on 6155 already at 2317, in anticipation of RR
switch there from 6135 at 0000, nothing like the heavy jamming on 6135, but
completely unnecessary this early on 6155. Not much there to be hurt, however,
once Austria closes at 2308, per sked in DXLD 7-142.
R. Rebelde, 5025, Nov 28 at 2323 with report on Moslem treatment of women.
There was so much background noise and music that I was almost convinced there was co-channel QRM from Africa, until it abruptly stopped at the end of the
item
** MYANMAR [and non]. Nov 28 at 2328 I noticed on 12120 there were apparently two stations, the stronger but weak one talking in an unID Asian language, and the other making a het of roughly 200 Hz. Looked up later, I find that the only thing scheduled at 23-24 on 12120 is VOA Burmese via Tinang. So is this now being jammed? Considering recent events and Myanmar`s denunciation VOA, it would not be at all surprising, but I don`t recall any reports that jamming was actually being done. Further monitoring of this and other VOA/RFA Burmese transmissions is needed. And have the extra broadcasts added after the strife almost two months ago been maintained?
** PRIDNESTROVYE. This time I was waiting for Radio PMR to begin its new North American service in English, Nov 28 at 2257, when 6240 was on with intermittent tones. No doubt Olle or Kai have measured their exact pitch from the
Grigoriopol site. 2300 opening as ``Here is Tiraspol... Radio PMR, of the
Pridenstrovian Moldavian Republic…`` and the program for Nov. 28. The entire
cast was about PMR`s diplomatic status and relations with Russia, Moldova,
Ukraine, Georgia, Kosovo, USA, starting with whether PMR license plates would
be valid across one of the borders. I am not sure, but I think they reserve the
name ``Moldova`` for the non-PMR part of the country on the wrong side of the
river. Closed with postal address, and radiopmr @ pobox.ru Brief IS at 2315, as
also heard at 2300, including sound of clock ticking, and directly into French.
If this English broadcast was typical, it`s at the behest of the polwonx and
will be exceedingly boring to the listener. Nothing about PMR arts or science,
nothing remotely entertaining
** TAIWAN [and non]. RTI`s ``Jade Bells & Bamboo Pipes`` show of traditional
music continues to be a winner. We had to pause our bandscanning when we came across it Wed Nov 28 at 2235 in the broadcast to Europe on 9355 via WYFR. However, there were no jade bells nor bamboo pipes to be heard --- just an exotic plucked instrument. The name of it was mentioned once in the middle but not at the end at 2255 when Carlson Wong was upwrapping it.
I assume this is also on the other RTI Wednesday broadcasts, and into UT
Thursdays? No, there was a talk feature on 5950 at 0343 check Nov 29. Does this mean that the final broadcast of each day`s program cycle is the 2200? And the new day starts on the 0100, if not 0200 or 0300? That throws the scheduling off in North American target by local days.
Strangely enough, the current pdf schedule grid

the day BEFORE they are broadcast. For example, the Thursday programs are
posted at 12:00 am on Thursday Taiwan Time (the very first minute of Thursday
in Taiwan), but in most parts of the world, it is still Wednesday!``
On the same page, plus the homepage, there are .wma and .rm linx to the past
week`s programs, so JB&BP should be found halfway thru the Wednesday files
7260 13 Nov 0838- MNG: Mongolian R 2nd prgr, Ulaanbaatar. Good signal with news in English and ID: "This is the news bulletin of the Voice of Mongolia in English on the Blue Sky Radio. We are on the air on Tuesday and Thursday".
